Gender Limitations

Greetings! We recently completed our chapter on Gender. In the news of late a student at Alpharetta High School was removed from the student council for proposing the consideration of gay couples as prom king and queen.
Story

In Canada, a contestant was banned from the Miss Universe contest, as she was born a man.
Story

Do positions like prom king and queen and Miss Universe demand the participants be gender specific in our society?

I am highly pissed off at these two stories, i believe a person is a person and there is already too much racism in the world we should have to discriminate against genders as well. If that class president is gay himself then hell yeah stand up for your rights kid, if hes not then maybe someone very important to him is gay and wants everyone who wants to be prom king or queen have the same chance. its sweet really...and about the miss universe lady she said that she's known she was a woman by age 4, well by god she is a woman. If you look at the picture you cant even tell she was born a male and i find it very unfair that they disqualified her just because of her past. It take alot of training and money to get ready for pageants that grand and she has worked just as hard as the rest of the girls. I agree with the "should be" prom king...this is bologna!

Honetly, I do not know what is next. What cultural direction is this country headed in. The once nostalgic America has gone to HEll. (pardon my french) At this point anything goes people! I do not have a problem with homosexuality, but lets act lets remain a civilized society. I have two questions I am going to ask those who are reading this, and if these questions do not offend you than you might lack a moral barometer. Ladies can I put on a wig, dress like a girl, and walk into the ladies restroom? Or, Men are you okay with me going into the bathroom, with a wig and urinating in your mist? Men don't pick on me while I am urinating standing up because I will sue you even though I dressed like a women. I still wanted to be treated like a man. I do not have a problem with homosexuality, but I do not like the transexaul lies. I think it is really a sickness. Prom king is a male, and Prom Queen is a female why is that so complicated. Gender is probably the most specific thing ever. Either you were born with a penis, or born with a vagina. In 2050, people are going to start saying they were born a dog, and file lawsuits when they feel like there not being treated like one.

My oldest son was born with a bi-lateral cleft lip and palette which means he was missing his top lip, part of his nose and the roof to his mouth, he has had over 13 surgical procedures to correct the issue and allow him to feel more comfident and comforable with his appearence even though he could have lived his life without major issues without surgery. Would you deny or judge him for changing what he was born like? Would you classify him as "sick" because he was different and wanted to change his physical appearence with surgery? I only ask because some on who changes their gender does so to stop living a "lie" and feel comforable in their appearence and body. I have personal experiances with people who have been in that situation and it is NOT an easy, pain free decision. It requires years of preparation and years of surgical procedures and it can be a very lonely experience because of social "support" and judgemental individuals. The very heartbreaking realization is the amount of people who take their own life because they don't think anyone understands or will support and love them either way. I really can't say anymore with out commenting on your last sentence and not judging you like you have others.

    2. I respect your opinion Jenn. I am familiar with this complication. And it sad that you can compare your son's complication to one changing their sexual identity. Heres a question for you. Hoping you know Micheal Jordan! If your favorite sports player reconstructed his gentalia, and went to play in the womans leauge would you then contest. If Micheal Jordan reconstructed his gentalia, and took estrogen then would you have contested to him playing in the WNBA. A man who dominated NBA (National Basketball Association.) I do not know if I have changed your mind on this topic Jenn, but there has to be some regulation. Please ponder on my words. I am sorry if I may have offended you in displaying my argument. Take it easy on me!! lol

I feel like people should live there own life. Quit getting into other peoples life. What harm does it hurt you if a homosexual man or woman is on the ballet for homecoming. NOTHING. If it offends you so much don't vote for them or don't go to homecoming. I just don't understand why other people try to bud into others lives. 60 years ago we were having the same argument over blacks and whites. I just don't understand what harm any of this is doing.

I believe Prom King, Prom Queen and Miss Universe are seen as gender specified. I don't necessary believe it is right but, the world has seen this titles belong to a certain gender. I believe that rules need to change but, it will take time. Just because I see it has acceptable to have a gay couple be prom king and queen doesn't mean the majority does. I think people see this as wrong because it is different. Most people do not like change. I feel like maybe the younger generation is okay with the changes as we have be more exposed to change. For example, seeing a gay couple in high school holding hands walking down the hall, I am personally not fazed by it at all but, my mother would be. She never saw that in high school and so seeing now it scary. Not because she has anything against gay people because it’s different and not in the norm for her. I believe when people in my generation are the principals of schools or on the committee for pageants, it will change.

  6. Meredith P. 98 in response to Peter A. 96

But why does Prom King have to be male and prom Queen female? How is going to hurt you if a gay man wins Prom Queen? If he gets the most votes what does it matter? Also, just because you are born with certain body parts doesn't mean they are there forever. People have surgeries to change it. So if I was to change all my physical parts to male, I feel like I am male, and dress like a male why should I be able to enter a Mr. GQ pageant. There would be nothing female left of me, so why would I be limited to female roles still.

If Micheal Jordan had started taking estrogen as regularly as someone does when they change sexes, this would effect his biology in such a way as to potentially have a serious impact on his athletic abilities. For one, it would be much more difficult for him to develope and maintain muscle, but other things would likely change as well, especially if he started taking it at a young age. I understand where you are coming from. There are biological differences between the sexes, but they are not entirely one or the other.

Society has always been gender specific. It doesn't matter to me if they are man or woman. if they have worked hard to get to where they are, then they should finished what they started. Stay out of folks lives and let them live their lives the way they want to. who cares if prom king and queen are a gay couple. Don't we have enough racism already.

I'll be honest, some of the comments thus far break my heart- I hate the word birth "defect" because it has be used on my son because of the need for surgey to repair cosmetic issues he has born with by being the lucky 1 out of 800 babies born per day - no one judges us for choosing to because if left it would be very unattractive to most, but God made him that way, so sre we changing the design - why is it any different for a transgender just because you can't see it, and as for prom court - why does anyone need to be singled out as a king or queen at all, it's just another popularity contest and effects more teens self esteem than it promotes. Prom should ne an overall celebration of everyone beauty, inside, outside, upside, down side - we need to get away from judgments, because in my humble opinion only one person has that right, and "he" new me before i was born.

Since our society is changing every year I feel like pagents and competitions should change their rules on their genders.Because some one is gay or transgender should not enable them to participate in certian activites. The people who choose to be different have a right to because they are just being who they are.I don't see why they should't compete; they are not hurting anyone in any way if the do participate. With the pagent they kicked the girl out because she didn't have the body naturally (born with it), so that means they should kick females out who have breast implants in the pagent.

I agree with you, I hate the word birht defect also. My child wasn't the lucky ones but i do know how it would feel if everyone would say that about her. Your also right because you would have to choose which gender the child will be and if you had choosen a girl gender then you child wouldn't be able to compete, which is wrong

    ReplyDelete
  16. Misty H. (92)

Ok, well, this is just a touchy subject all the way around... If you are competing in pageants that are gender specific, you should have to be that gender in order to have the pageant title. If it not explicitly laid out that you have to be born male/female in order to compete for the title, then it should be open to anyone - born that way or made that way. However, Prom King & Prom Queen really should be male for the King and female for the Queen. I am not saying this to discriminate in any way, it just goes back to the roles being gender specific - Kings are male and Queens are female. Prom Kings/Queens need to be voted on based on their sex, not their sexual orientation, because do you really think a straight, male Prom King is going to honor the dance tradition with a gay, male Prom Queen? Most girls would be a good sport if they had to dance with another girl, but teenaged boys not so much...

  19. President George Bush once said during the initial plans to invade Iraq. "There is no middle ground; you are either with us or against us". So if you want to be a prom queen, or even the queen of England, then you should be born a natural female (that includes your God given Virginia). So also if you want to be a prom king or even the king of Scotland, you should be a natural male (with your God given penis)

I don’t have problem with homosexuals, as we cannot castigate them in our society today. The most important factor remains.... Up and down, highs and lows, right and wrong, good or bad, black and white and most importantly in this issue, KING AND QUEEN.

  23. Both stories make me mad. I don't get why people have discriminate over things that concern gays or transgender. Basically people discriminate over anything that is not "normal" to society. The frist story about the kid being kicked off as president by just SUGGESTING that they should allows gay couples to be prom queen and king is just bs in my book. All he was trying to do is change things around a little and to kick him off is discrimination. About the beauty contestant this issue has always made me mad because if someone feels that that is who they are and who they want to be since the time that they were born, then why not be supportive and help that person to be what they want to be. I dunno i think all of this is just stupid.

I believe in our society, these stories seem to be on-going issues of debate. The way I was raised is that marriage is between man and woman and God thought of you long before your parents did. That being said, I think its important to accept everyone regaurdless of how they decide to live their lives. However, prom king and queen and a beauty pagent will always be gender specific. Perhaps if the gay/ lesbian community wanted to be included in these types of events, there could be a way to create their own pagents.

  31. This is too much to think about. Why must we make new rules and regulations to make life even more complicated than it already is. Why cant the homosexuals just go for which ever gender they are? Such as a boy homosexual be prom king. Why must he insist on being the queen? Just to make things complicated. Or even a girl...why must she want to be prom king?!?! They are the same role...just in their own genders. People think way too much! Settle your mind a little. Go with the flow. Life is already difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I totally agree. There is a reason why men play some different roles than women. We a biologically different in the way we are built. Just changing your private does not make you the other gender. I am not against homosexuality at all. I am just saying that changing a penis to a vagina does not make you a REAL woman. If it makes you happy do what you do. Just know that there are others factors in being a woman.... you will never have a period, never bear a child, never have the emotional feelings only a woman has. Same for a woman as well. I dont know all the different feelings a man has but im sure just changing your China to a penis does not give you the full effect of being a man.

  33. Deana L. have alot of mixed feelings on this topic. In one point.. the girl from alpharetta should have never been dismissed bc of her opinion so what if they wanted to have a gay couple for prom king and queen. they dont do different proms for blacks and whites so why do it for gays??? same thing.... now for the "miss universe" I feel she should have been disqualified unless she had a serious condition when she was born that her parents had to make a decision what gender to make her (hermaphrodite) then the situation might be a little different... other wise miss universe is for females only

    ReplyDelete
  34. Nate H 92

This is always an interesting topic, and it's just as fun to see people bend concepts that seem unbendable as it is to see how irate some others get over such people. When it comes to prom king and queen, who cares? If the school votes for a gay couple to take the honor, then the people have spoken. The designation of a prom king and queen is entirely socially constructed, so there is no "divine law" being contravened in this case. It has nothing to do with biology.

As for the beauty pagent, if a woman who was born a man can be competitive in an all female competition, that probably says more about the judges than anything else. I don't know how it was determined that the contestant didn't have two X chromosones, but if no one could tell the difference between a man and a bunch of pretty young women, then either the judges' abilities are seriously lacking or someone did a really good job at making the conversion. Either way, I find it funny how some people freak out when they discover, opps, they were attracted to someone of the same sex.

As for the bigger issue to which this pertains, just a few comments. There is a difference between sex and gender; the latter being the roles and identities we attach to sex. It is arguable just how much biology influences gender. As to the question of sex, this is biologicaly determined, yet it isn't always clearly determined...babies are not always born one way or the other. In addition to hermaphrodites, some people are born with XXY chromosomes. Black and white distinctions between the sexes do not apply to every person, and this raises serious questions.

I do not have a problem with someone undergoing an operation to modify his or her sex - there should be no law saying the person cannot do it - but this does raise important questions. One that seems especially pertinent to me is that if we accept gender as a social construct, then should we be reconstructing biology in order to fit into that pre-existing construct or focus on redefining gender in cultural terms?

In my perspective i don't think that events like the Prom should require specific genders for their King and Queen. The students as a whole are allowed to vote for who they want to Prom King and Queen. I feel that being as though the students do vote then if a gay couple wins then that couple should be allowed to serve as such. As far as the Miss Universe Contest goes,it really is gender specific. I have worked in the beauty industry for the past 6 years. I have had the privilege to work with many gay males throughout the years. It is painful for me to watch how these young men are stared at and judged by so many people. Currently I work as a makeup artist in a prestigious retail store. I work with a man that dresses like a woman, wears makeup like a woman, and has hair like a woman. We refer to him as "her" and talk to our clients like he is a woman. It is common to see the confusion on some peoples faces when we do this. I do not agree with the judgement people express towards people who chose to be a different gender. It seems like anything goes in today's society and I do not understand why people are surprised by some of the things that are going on. We should be growing and expanding our ideas of what is acceptable. The gay men that I have worked with have all become dear friends of mine and they are all such beautiful people. Everyone deserves to be recognized in a positive way no matter what their sexual or gender preference is. It is the people that sit there and make judgments and are close minded that is keeping our society from growth.

  41. This topic can be so interesting in the right arena. I was raised in in the church. I am a Christian so I do believe what the bible says, however I also believe in not judging people. I really don't care who believes they were born in the wrong body. I treat everyone with love and respect and expect to be treated the same. There are so many people in the world that you can't possibly think we all feel and behave the same way. It is not our responsibility to judge other people and their behaviors or even who they decide to sleep with. I raise my children to treat human beings as they want to be treated. Life is hard enough just being heterosexual I can not worry about what homosexual people are doing. Its their life...let them live it. We all are accountable for the decisions that we make individually. Allow people to be who they are and you concern yourself with being a better citizen and figuring out how your actions can impact your community and the children being raised in this time. You can sometimes learn a lot from young people. Treat everyone with compassion and love, its the only way.

These 2 topics make me think of the first pregnant man, who was naturally bone a woman and fought to have his sex changed from female to male, but kept his female parts, so if he wanted kids later on he could have them. Why would you go through all the trouble of changing your sex to just go and do something you were naturally born to do. Its like the saying you cant have your cake and eat it too. So on the miss universe Canada if they were not born a naturally female then its not right to be in the contest, and they should have read the rules a little closer and then they wouldn't have wasted their time and money getting ready for this, so the organizers to come and take it away. For the high school kid. I think its stupid he got kicked off the counsel for standing up for something he believes in. He didn't need to be kicked off for the suggestion, so the school could have handled that in a different way.

It's not that i don't support gays i just feel it is not the way things are supposed to be as far as contest like that.

I agree with you Christa. I do not discriminate against sex changes, gays or lesbians as it is their lifestyle choice. I feel that certain roles such as the vote for prom king and queen as well as the Miss Universe contest are gender specific and will always be that way. It is what it is and we shouldn’t continue to make accommodations for others that choose to live outside the traditional lifestyle associated with these contests. If they insist on being included then maybe they can play a role in creating similar contests which will not have a conflict as far as gender is concerned.

I feel that we should have regulation as to gender specific events. Children can be mean and vote for a gay class mate as a big joke. I think if we keep it gender specific, then no one will get hurt if it was intended as joke (which is bound to happen somewhere!). This is all I’m going to say on this sore subject.

I think that society will always be gender specific, we can make progress as a society towards understanding other culture and ways of life, but there will always be some type of gender limitations.

I think that people only become prejudice toward someone who is gay or lesbian, or transgendered or transexual when they KNOW that that person is gay, lesbian, transgendered or a transexual. If they don't know and are totally oblivious to the fact, I think that they would treat that person differently; nicer and with more respect.

Wow! What a controversial issue we have here this week. I personally do not like to judge others because I don’t feel that I have the right to do so. I think that if someone is gay or a lesbian, it is their right; to each his own I suppose. I would not choose that lifestyle but I have a couple of friends who have. I will say that as far as the pageant goes, there are rules which must be followed. Like it or not this has always been a role for women. Candidates for prom king and queen in high school have always been based on gender. I hate to speculate right from wrong in either circumstance as I can see the positive and negative side to each situation. Like it or not these have always been gender specific roles and may or may not remain that way in the future; it is what it is. If gay, lesbian or individuals who have chosen to have a sex change want to be involved in these activities they can opt to encourage other pageants to include these individuals rather than try and change the traditional ones.

Though one to talk about. As a missionary in training and with my faith and following the bible it is moraly wrong to be homosexual. As for being in a public contest, the rules must be followed. I do know and have homosexual friends in my life, the are great people. Maybe they should start their own proms and contest.

Troy, while I respect your opinion and congratulate you on your journey to becoming a missionary I have to disagree with your opinion that God thinks being gay is wrong. God created the heavens and the earth, and the inhabitants of the earth. These inhabitants include plants, humans, animals and insects. There are plants that only pollinate between same sex species, and everyday we are discovering animals and insects all over the world that express homosexuality. So in your post you state that homosexuality is "morally wrong," does this mean that God will damn those animals just because of their homosexuality? In the bible it states that God created us in His image, my personal belief as a Christian is if He didn't like homosexuality, he would not have given us the option in the first place. I invite you and anyone else interested to read an article found on National Geographic talking about this particular subject

Since I am a homosexual myself, I feel that when we hear about prom king and queen, we automatically think about the "norm". Yea it's suppose to be a man and a woman, but what rules really glorify that? We are in a new day and age, and everyone needs to face it that LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender, Questioning) people are in this world, and guess what? They breath, eat sleep, and have feelings just like anyone else. And they want equality. So to answer the question to does our society demand the normal gender specific spot to be filled by the correct gender? OF COURSE!!!!! because that is what this society is used to and is somewhat narrow minded and is unacceptable to any change. Look at our presidents, been a white man for so long, and now we finally have a black president. Things in this society and the world are and will change eventually. The younger generations are growing up, and instead of being taught to shun a gay or look at someone differently because of who they love or because they feel like they should have been born the opposite sex, we are teaching LOVE! Most of the intolerance I would have to say, comes from the non-separation of church and state. Religion is affecting everything we do these days. Women can't have abortions because religion, gays cant marry, or have the chance at prom king or queen, because religion teaches us ONLY MAN AND WOMAN. I'm not hating because I am a christian, more of a spiritual being myself, but we sometimes let our own beliefs get too much in front of us to let someone else have a chance to live their life and enjoy things. I totally went off on many tangents trying to explain myself here, but I think that these things are what cradles the fate of choices made in everyday life. I hope I haven't offended anyone because this is a very controversial subject, but if someone that reads this and is anti-gay or against anything to that nature, please just sit back and think about if you would like your life dictated everyday and wasn't able to participate in things like prom court. Thanks everyone for reading. Peace and Love around the world for generations

I really like your post. I agree with you that some people do become prejudice when they find out if someone is LGBTQ. I have experienced it myself. Had great friends that always hung out with me and invited me to everything, but when they found out I was gay, they backed off. It hurts, and I know that every homosexual or transgendered person out there, feels hurt when something like that happens to them. They may say they aren't hurt or act like it doesn't hurt them, but it does.

Like Clint, I am gay and it really upsets me that we still live in a world that is unequal. It is ridiculous that a gay couple is not allowed as prom king and king or queen and queen. I was told that I couldn't bring a male date to my prom by a teacher that sold the tickets. If I knew then what I know know I would have done it anyways but I was afraid of an uproar from ignorant closed minded people. It's hard enough being a teenage student but being gay and discriminated against makes it much more difficult. We have progressed so much as a nation but still have such a long way to go! As far as the pageant contestant goes, if she wants to compete then I think she should be able to. However, I didn't write the rules so I think she is wasting her time. It's like a bunch of 50 year olds fighting American Idol because they can't audition due to the age restrictions. Both are privately owned and have their own rules! It may not be right but if it is written and known before, then there is nothing that can be done! It is UNFORTUNATE and UNFAIR but it is WRITTEN!

    Micah S 96 in response to Peter A 96

Peter, Peter, Peter..... The world is full of ignorance and close mindedness, do you really want to be perceived as occupying that large group of people. I would really like for you to go back and read all of your posts after reading this! In your initial post you said," I do not have a problem with homosexuality, but lets act lets remain a civilized society." Looks to me like you inferred that homosexuality is uncivilized. I don't know about everyone else, but when I read or hear someone contradict themselves, it's hard to believe their words past that point. Do you or do you not have a problem with homosexuals? Right after the above quote, you compared homosexuality to a man dressing up as a women and going into the women's restroom. For your sake, I hope you meant to switch topics to the pageant contestant because being gay doesn't mean you would do that sort of thing. Another quotation,"I do not have a problem with homosexuality, but I do not like the transexaul lies. I think it is really a sickness. Prom king is a male, and Prom Queen is a female why is that so complicated.", also proves that your opinion has no relevance. I am dying to know who said that the boy is wanting a transsexual to be prom king or queen? He said a gay couple. Knowing many gay men in the area, I'm sure that very few would want to be named prom queen. The title king and king would be more suitable. I'm not really sure if you think that in a gay relationship there is a woman and a man or what, but if you do then you should definitely do some actual research. Also, the repeated statement, "I do not have a problem with homosexuality," probably means you really do. Say it a few more times and you might convince yourself! Last but not least, you compared the transgender contestant to Michael Jordan. Clearly, it would be unfair for a man to go through a sex change operation and compete among women in basketball. More than likely, if Michael Jordan had a sex change and competed with women, he would unfairly dominate. How is this similar to the pageant case? More than likely the transgender contestant is going to be at a disadvantage, not the other girls.

Oh..... And as far as the dog comparison, I could compare a certain someone to a dog in MANY ways!

I believe that homosexuality should be just as equal as heterosexuality. I too am a Christian and I see in others posts inferring that God looks down upon those who are homosexual. I find this belief very disappointing and in fact very "unchristian" since Jesus himself taught to love others as you love yourself. No where in the bible does it say God will punish those who are gay. There is no commandment that states "Thou shall not be homosexual, or love/marry another of its own gender." This thought process to me is quite arrogant. I am not homosexual but I do believe they are people too and deserve the same amount of respect. Now with that said, those who are gay have to realize private events like Miss Universe have their own private rules and they cannot expect to participate if the rules clearly state you cannot be transgender or whatever. My thought is that instead of fighting for that kind of participation why not gather and have their own type of pageant to show everyone that they are perfectly capable of achieving anything and everything that another individual has the opportunity to obtain. Do I think homosexuals should be able to fight for their country? Of course! Women have served in the military since WWII and you don't believe relationships sparked during those times in between men and women? People don't seem to realize that homosexuality is not a modern movement, it has been around for centuries and this particular group is now fighting for their beliefs and I applaud them for it.

    1. Stacey, just wanted to hit on the certain points you made. You said that nowhere in the bible does God say he will punish those who are gay, however Romans 1:27 says "In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and recieved in themselves due penalty for their perversion.", Leviticus 18:22 says, " Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable" , these are just two scriptures, and trust me, there are many more scriptures that hit on the topic of homosexuality. I am a Christian, and I do love all people, and that is the reason that I have to teach others what I have learned as well. The devils' ways are cunning, and he will do whatever he can to make people disregard the truth. Homosexuality is not right in the eyes of God, period.

Well I don't think it's okay for people to try to change the way things are set up. It should stay the way it's always been. Prom king and queen should be for a boy and a girl. Not two boys or two girls. I have nothing against gay people, I just don't think it's right. Although, it was wrong of them to remove the student from student council. It was just a suggestion they could have easily said no to. Same thing applies to the Miss Universe contestant. It is a contest for women only, and it should stay that way. Honestly, this is obviously a very very touchy subject, and I do not want to offend anyone in anyway. I am not exactly certian in my opinion on this topic. In a way i do believe that being gender specific is a good thing in these types of situations; although i am not sure if I feel this way simply because it is the "norm" or if it is my actual opinion. I in no way shape or form have anything against gay, lesbian, or bisexual people; your choice is up to you, although I myself would never chose that lifestyle I do not look down upon anyone for that. You can not help who you love. What is wrong with our country when a person cannot make a suggestion without people going a little overboard. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but at least give people that choice and let them vote on it. Someone shouldn't be punished or ridiculed for their ideas or opinions. Our country was created on great ideas and opinions. As for Miss Universe, we are all unique individuals. I think if a man wants to become a woman and feels confident enough to try to win Miss Universe, then why not? Women complain about equality all the time. I ahve no issues or problems with anyone who is gay however, I believe that the words king and wueen are specific to gender and we shouldn't change the rules as we go just to appease people. I would rather they change the rules to where to males who are gay can be nominated as prom kings i say this because I have gay friends who are offended when people call them "drama queens" and dont want to be referred to as queens or women so why not refer to them as men with respect to ther sexual preference. As for the transgender, I am against a man turned woman participating in an all female competition let's be honest with respect to transgenders, there are some sick people out there who would change their identity/looks because they want to get away with something. I have seen a show on Dr. pHil where a man who dresses as a woman during the day because he loves to play dress up but is attracted to women and actually is married does this make it ok for him to join the pageant because he looks like a woman that to me is just a free pass for people to change and bend the rules so they can do whatever they want. Yes we should respect each other's choices however as a nation there should be rules and structures that we cannot change.

The removal of the student council member was unnecessary and very close minded. Prom king and queen is based on popularity and the student body decides who is crowned at prom. The contest does not have anything to do with a person's gender, it is just based upon, "is this individual popular enough to generate votes to win?" However, in our society, it is very specific about gender and certain titles. Anyone who decides to go against what the norm is will be cast as an outsider.

  85. We live in the United States for a reason, for "FREEdom". Therefore, anyone and everyone should be able to express themselves however they would like. That's what makes our country so special and unique because we have the right to do so. However, I believe that a "Queen" should be a "Woman" and a "King" should be a "Man". Some people may agree and some may disagree. I'm not saying it's wrong; I'm just very traditional, and that's how I see it. On the story with the transgender girl, I feel the same way. I believe that those types of contests should be the same way, women with women, men with men, and transgenders with transgenders because she was born a male, and she might have more distinct features in one way and lack some in another, which might make her have an advantage or possibly a disadvantage, and the people holding the pageant could get sued for that because now days, people sue for everything, so it might be more about protection than discrimination.

Yea in the past you was a male but the fact of the matter is you a female now, so you should be treated as one. Just because your a transexual doesnt mean you get to play both parts you are either a male and follow all the male rules or you are a female and follow all the females rules. I think if we as a nation begin to change the rules to be able to do what we want, at the end of the day there will be no rules. For the guy who entered the contest, he knew he was wrong for doing it. He knows that those type of contest are intended for females only. I respect anyone who wants to be what they want but in this situation, its just the way it is. But for the student that just wasent fair.

    1. Crystal N.97 in response to Oliverio Vasquez. I agree with you. That was just wrong, and sneaky. I think that if a transgender wants to be in a competition such as Miss Universe, they could at least be honest from the beginning. The truth always comes to the light in the United States. I think that transgenders should start up their own competition because they will have that in common.

  90. Victoria M. 96. i saw this issue on the news and was thinking about it. I think its fine to have gay prom kings and queens. but im still not sure how i feel about a born man being allowed to enter the miss universe, but i guess its ok because most of the other contestants have had surgery too to give them the edge. but i feel like he knew it was wrong to begin with, does that mean we will start letting males play womans sports too? where do we draw the line.

I honestly think that we are too advanced in this country to keep dwelling on putting ANY human being down for things that are out of their hands. If our government/society worked with common sense, they would realize that the world does not revolve around their petty opinions. Don't want an abortion? Don't get one. Don't like the idea of homosexual sex? Don't have it. Don't like thinking about your little man whacked off? Don't get a sex change. It's that simple. It's the differences that make us great in this world. Need I remind people what the African American community went through simply because they could not help having a different amount of melanin in their skin tone?

I say it's these show-stopping sorts of articles that are helping the sheltered pull themselves out of their "perfect" little world to find in their hearts a more accepting way of looking at things.

  92. Stephanie M. 98 (ONLINE) in response to Victoria M. 96:

I think you need to look at it from a slightly broader position. They may be born male, but they always find themselves identifying with the opposite gender. It's arguable among some people that a sex change, body modification and hormones does not mean that you are in fact whichever gender, but tell me that you can look at them and come to a conclusion that they are man or woman and I'll call bull (at least with many cases). I say you address the person as they want to be seen. It would be disrespectful any other way.

To answer your question, if a transgendered man-turned-woman wants to play women's sports...my humble opinion would be to LET HER! :)

  93. Some things just shouldn't be changed no matter how the world changes. That's how bars set and concepts are made without them we would lose order and the true meaning that each developed thing was created to show or represent.

I believe its called prom KING for a reason as well as QUEEN. King is generally a man, and queen is usually a woman, now if you suggested to prom kings or queens, i would understand and feel as though thats more suitable, but if youre a completely different sex other than they label you desire, theres nothing you can do about that. It wouldnt make sense. The miss universe padgent is different, i mean she was sexually reconstructed to represent a different sex, goign through that kind of surgery and change completely changes that person and if they look well enough and are a good enough person why shouldnt they be allowed to participate?

It's not like it the king and queen of England, its a dumb school prom. If they are voted to win and one of the males is fine with being considered a woman by his peers then who cares. People are so ignorant these days that they have to take issues so far for absolutely no reason. Just because your son or daughter lost to a homosexual couple doesn't mean you can throw a bitch fit and complain.

  96. Crystal N.97 Homecoming court, and the Mrs. Universe pageant are a part of a tradition based on gender. I don't see any reason that they should be changed to accommodate the needs of any other group. The solution to this situation is quite simple. Start a new competition. Some things just don't require alot of thought, and in my opinion this is one of them.

Transgendered women aren't exactly another group, though. Most of them have made huge, permanent changes to their bodies and lives, just so they can live as women. I can't imagine a transgendered beauty contest doing well.

Political correctness will be the downfall of this country. Nothing built on tradition should ever be changed to be PC or to appease the social terrorist trying to sabatage it. The same groups that cry and bitch for change are the same ones that will be quick to tell you you are unqualified to participate in whatever it is that they hold dear. Prom King/Queen and MISS Universe are supported traditions if you don't like them make your own tradition and see if it has support, but get your biggoting nose out of everyone elses traditions.

I know several people who are transgender and some that have already made the change. I can't begin to imagine what they feel and how they come to that decision. But I say go with what make you more comfortable...what makes you, you. I think that with all the freedoms that this country offers that it should be ok to be a gay prom queen and king...or the next Miss Universe. After all these people are voted for. SO I say if a student class votes a gay couple the next prom king and queen then they deserve it or the judges vote in a Transsexual Miss Universe then so be it!

I agree with you! I believe that one should not complain because the class voted for a gay couple/or person. Its ridiculous! Most gay people do not go to their prom because they are bullyied in school for being the way that they are. One of my best friends, who is a lesbian, church (yes, church) had a prom so those who didn't get to go in high school could have a second chance! I went and it was awesome!

  100. It's weird that the student was thrown off the council just for suggesting the idea. I think it was a controversial idea, and it would stir up tension in the area if it was passed, let alone if a gay couple was elected Prom King / Queen. I don't have an issue with it, but some people do. Then again, it's sad that gay couples don't have the same rights and opportunities that straight couples do.

Good for her! It's sad to see that such discrimination is still so prevalent. I can certainly understand why the judges might be hesitant to include her, but if someone is willing to make such permanent, painful changes to themselves to become a women, then they're a woman in my book. Hopefully this will bring a bit of attention to the troubles of transgendered women.

homecoming king and queen are ment for female and male, not male and male. transgendered or whatever, the whole world don have to change to ammondate everyone because they decided to change from a man to a women or from a women to a male.

Yes they do need to start another competition for those who want to keep changeing. If you want to be who you want to be then except others for who they are. things like homecoming and Miss Universe.

  104. Kemi o.98 What people do in their own personal lives is not anyone's business. I think when we hold such old traditions in school there is a certain value that still stands today and we don't want to send out the wrong message. However, kids at this age is very impressionable.

of course they are! women should not be able to compete for Mr. Universe and men certainly should not be able to compete for Miss America, how rediculous! Also King and Queen are gender specific titles just like Mr. and Mrs. a man cannot be Queen and a woman cannot be King.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I believe that these titles are made gender specific for a reason, prom kind and queen... But if someone does have a legal sex change they are changed to being a man or women even if they were born women or man. They should maybe just have another award for best man couple or something of the sort for gays or lesbians.. Either way nobody should be discriminated against.
