Welcome to Walmart!

Sam Walton believed customers appreciate a friendly greeting, thus he established the position of Greeter for his mega retail chain, Wlamart. Three decades later the iconic Walmart Greeter will no longer welcome Walmart customers with a shopping cart and a smile. Moe’s Southwest Grill, encourages multiple employees to shout, “Welcome to Moe’s!” This practice can be a little over the top. Nonetheless, it’s intended as a unique welcome to their establishment.

Please state why or why not you think a personal greeting at retail stores and restaurants is a good practice.

I feel that personal greetings at retail stores and restaurants are a good practice. I would feel awesome if I were always greeted in stores. I hope I do not sound silly when I say this, but joy (happiness) is contagious. I speak for all customers when I say we feel more uplifted when we are greeted at the door. This same upliftment of joy and happiness can be directed to someone else. And I am sure everyone would like to shop in an environment that has a good vibe. It also has people leaving the store feeling more compassionate about the rest of their day.

I have personal experience with this because I worked in retail for two years. Although I have not worked in the restaurant business, I do know that a "greeting" at a retail store is very important. You do not want to be overly exhuberant and obnoxious, but you want your customers to know you're there if they need your help. A store or restaurant's greeting is their first impression, and even though it's said to not judge a book by its cover, people do, and that's reality. Therefore, greetings are important to businesses dealing with any type of customer or patient, and it will continue to stay that way, as it should.

Yes! I love it when someone greets me with the right energy. Some people just do it because they are forced to come, but it is obvious when they do that. If the greeting is done with a good heart, the costumer feels the energy and that is contagious. Happy customers, good sales and tips!

I feel greeting people when they walk into a business is great customer service. It acknowledges the customer and makes them feel welcome and keep coming back. Down here in the south I noticed how everyone is so friendly and courteous and when I lived in NY no one would even look at you when you walked into a business let alone say "hello". I do agree Moes is over the top with their yelling "Welcome to Moes" to everyone that walks through the door.

    1. Diane I agree with you. I am from Michigan and having someone greet you when you walk into an establishment is rare so I enjoy it. Moe's is a little over the top sometimes I think they are targeting young people. I moved down south for the hospitality and friendliness so I am fine with greeters!

I really believe it all depends on the enviroment we develop for the staff, the expectations we give and the example we set. I always made my store a fun enviroment for my customers and my employee and had VERY few complaints. That being said, I've had some crappy service in each state I've lived in but I try very hard to brighten their day (killem with kindness, lol)

  4. I watch too much news. After watching a program on television I better understand why retailers have greeters. It isn't just for making customers feel acknowledged and greeted with a happy face, but also to make sure thieves are aware that they have been seen as well. Body language sometimes tells the retailer if a person could possibly be a thief so greeting them lets everyone know that they are in the store and are being watched. In addition, it does help with customer building skills for those actually coming in to do the right thing. Either way I believe that greeters are good for business. Customers don't feel ignored and that there is some one available where you don't need to search for help, which I can't stand. Greeters are too generally older people, which helps our elderly citizens to have additional income so I am defintely for greeters!

Although, I've never worked in a retail store i have a horrible shopping habit. There is a huge difference from a warm greeting and hounding you to buy something. I feel like I should be acknowledge when entering a store because if not I sometimes feel unwelcomed. We're so accustomed to a warm welcome that when it's not there its very unusual. Like at the DMV, I hate going to the DMV because I feel like most of them are debbie downers and don't want to help anyone. Now when I go to chick fil a, I feel like I have to be just has happy because they are happy all the time! Long story short I feel like greeters show appreciation of your business to the store.

I never though of greeters being a watch person for theft. Its a great thing to have incase someone decides they feel like they deserve to have the item without paying for it. I also agree that it helps the older generation have income and they can still stay active even at a later age so they can have a little extra income.

Good manners , hospitality are always been appreciated by people. It is a very smart thing for retail stores and restaurants to have greeters, worm greetings certainly make people welcomed. Imagine; after all day of work , tired , you go to your favorite restaurant to have a meal and to relax, and to see people meeting you with happiness and a great hospitality make your day somewhat lighter.

Greeting customers is a great practice because it makes that customer feel welcomed and important. When a representative at a store takes the time to greet and smile, it makes the consumer want to continuously shop at that particular store. I enjoy eating at Moe's Southwest Grill because of the delightful atmosphere. The "Welcome to Moe's" greeting was shocking the first time I visited the restaurant because I was not accustomed to being greeted in such a manner. In the end it does not hurt to smile and say hello, it can go a long way.

I love this practice! It makes you feel more welcome and like you are given individualized attention. I love to watch the guy at the QT right across from the Paulding Campus work. He could be knee-deep in a line that wraps around near the bathrooms and yet, he takes the time to welcome each and every person that comes into the store, ask them if they need a receipt, thank them or give them a welcome, and ask that they come back. Every. Single. Time. Without fail. It helps that he's always very nice and cheerful, even on a bad morning.

I miss good service like that. ESPECIALLY at Wal-Mart.

  20. Stephanie M. 98 (ONLINE) in response to Catina K. 05 (98)

I wish Kroger would get with the same program. We have more theft or attempted theft than probably any store I know. Then again, we do have a sharp eye right by the door that mostly catches thieves. People will walk in with their reusable bags, fill them up with expensive meat or cleaning products and try to walk out. One time, we caught this woman trying to steal five or six huge boxes of diapers. The bad part about it all is that we would be reprimanded for trying to stop a thief.

Sucks when something that was probably supposed to make you feel good as a customer has turned into security watch.

I love this practice too because it brings people closer together. Stephanie is right, there are people who already greet customers, and these people seem more determined when it comes to their job. All stores and restaurants need to greet customers because this promotes more joy when shopping. As a result, customers walk out the building feeling more uplifted.

I believe a personal greeting, followed by a great customer service experience is always number one in places like retail stores and restaurants. I have worked in both environments for many years, so I know that making your customer feel appreciated is what keeps them coming back. The restaurant can be beautiful, the food can be amazing, however; if the customer service is bad then it doesn't even matter. You can't be too agressive, but you need to show the customer the same courtesy as you would want someone to show you. So smile, greet them accordingly, and leave them with service that they will make them want to come back again and again.

When have a guest invited to your home you always greet them. I feel this is a way big companies like Wal-Mart and Moe's intend of making customers come back. If we feel welcomed and that they care about our experience at their business we will continue to visit, or recommend them. American society is programmed with basic manners so this is one of many of those manners we feel is essential to show respect and compassion for others.

I believe that it shows good customer service skills upon arrival to the establishment. Also, makes customers feel acknowledged as a person instead of a dollar sign. Even though some people would find it a bit annoying, I believe that it sets the mood of what you might expect from your visit there. Which actually just makes them more money in the end.

This is quite a good practice since, nobody hates a smile and warm greetings. However,it does not always work well. You may walk into a store or a restaurant and find a frowned greeter till you feel better walking back.Others will not even bother to greet you or assist you when you seem stuck. It as well promotes the business as a customer is likely to go back to a store or a restaurant where you feel you were treated well and like a human being. However,it never bothers me whether they greet me or not but I just go head and carry on with my business.

I think that door greeter is an excellent idea for stores and restaurants especially if someone is having a bad or off day and sometimes all they need is a little hello and smile from a stranger. Atleast if i was having a bad day i would really appreciate it...also i think its good showmanship when greeted, it says "hi welcome to my store, enjoy your time and we hope to see you again." I think that if you are at a made to order restaurant, such as Moe's, it is a good practice to greet the customer so the customer is aware that they have been acknowleged and will be waited on. I do feel like Moe's can go a bit overboard and simply one person to greet would suffice as opposed to everyone yelling. At retail clothing stores, I feel as if some go way too far and sometimes annoy rather than help as some people just want to shop in peace and would ask for help if it was needed. I think overall, personal greetings are a good practice, as long as it is simply a greeting.

I work in retail. At our store we have a greeter that stands in the front of the store and says hello to everyone that walks in and also offers them a Hershey's kiss. The customers love it! Often when a customer is not greeted, they will complain about it in an online survey.
I believe that having a greeter is important to the success of the store. It makes the customer feel welcome and comfortable to spend their money in the store. Along with having a greeter we are required to walk around and ask every customer if they have any questions or need help with finding a product that they need. We are constantly complimented on how friendly and knowledgeable we are about our products.

Moreover it will take nothing away from the management or staff of the store if they choose to say a warm and friendly hello to their custormers as they work in, but rather it will make the custormers feel a more sense of fulfilment.

Since I've worked a number of those sh-- jobs where you have to deal with the miserable public, I always try to be friendly with people who are stuck behind a counter. The Walmart greeter or the Moe's thing, however, give me a funny feeling sometimes; the whole idea is too contrived. It's not that i hold it against the people who have to do it - it's their job - so, I'm friendly back, but I don't get anything out of an obligatory greeting. I'm suprised that such a concept on the part of these companies actually increases sales enough to pay someone minimum wage to only say hello... when I go somewhere to buy essentials, I stick to the list and get the hell out. When someone is genuinely friendly or polite, of course it feels good, but when someone is being required to do something, especially the really gimmicky, overly excited stuff like the Moe's thing seems to be, it's just wierd.

The first reason would be too obviously to make the customer feel welcome and noticed; doing so will make the customer feel comfortable and more willing to come back. The other reason I believe that greeting the customer as soon as they walk in is good is because if the customer realizes that you noticed them and are aware of what is going on around you it makes it less likely to have people shoplift; verses a place where it seems as if the employee is not paying any attention to the customer. All in all I believe that greeting the customer is a very good idea, it can definitely get annoying after a while but it is worth it.

I agree that if you walk into a store/ resturaunt without a greeter you do not feel quite as welcome. If you want people to come back a greet at the door could definitely help out. Everyone wants to feel welcome and wanted.

I think it is nice that when you walk into a store, that you get greeted straight away. I do think it is a waste of the company's money to hire someone specif, just for that position.

  64. I think that it is an overall good practice for a company to have greeters. I don't necessarily long to be greeted everytime I walk into an establishment because sometimes I'm not in the mood to be bothered by people. On the contrary, if I'm inadvertently ignored in a fast food resturaunt, and I want to place an order quickly, I can become highly fustrated for lack of speedy recognition.I like the greeters at Moe's, but sometimes I'm startled by the greeting.

I think that it is a good practice to greet each and every customer in retail store and restaurants because it makes the customer feel welcomed. A simple "Welcome to _____________, How are you?" goes a long way. I think it is more important in restaurants for business than retail stores. If a customer has a good time and feels welcome in a restaurant they are most likely to come back and probably tip better as well. In walmart, it doesn't matter as much because people are going to keep coming back no matter what.

  68. Angelia D 98 (ONLINE) I’m going to go at this not from a retail store or restaurant point of view but draw from my past work experience. I worked at “hometown” bank for just shy of 11 years. For the better part of my time there I was the receptionist of the main office of that bank and part of my job was to greet every customer who walked into the back and to wish them a good day when they left. We did this to let the customer know that we saw them. It was for safety, the more people that look you in the eye, smile and say hello, the safer you are. Speaking as a customer I also like to know that the employees are paying attention to what is going on around them. I want someone to look me in the eye and greet me when I come into an establishment and wish me a good day when I leave. A personal touch is such a nice thing to have

I enjoy going to Wal-Mart and being greeted with a smiling face when I walk in the door. I'm not much for shopping, dislike it entirely. So walking into the store and having someone greet you with a smiling face seems to create a much more pleasant atmosphere to an experience that I'm already dreading. It will be an absolute shame to see that position gone.

It's a good idea for a few reasons. First off, you WANT your customers to feel welcome. Who wants to go to a place where they don't feel welcome? I don't. There is nothing worse than going into a restaurant or store and having the employees make you feel like a burden. Customer service is very important! It's also good practice because it makes the person realize people are paying attention, thus making them less likely to rob the place.

I completely agree. You never know what kind of day someone is having. I drive a school bus and I am the first and last person those children see each and every day to begin their school day. If they had a bad day a home, my attitude on the bus can change their entire day at school and vice versa. I think having a greeter is a great thing, it can help change a person's mood. I love going to Moe's. It reminds me of the tv show "Cheers". I just wish they could all shout my name when I walked in. Now that would be fantastic!!

I like to be greeted when I walk into an establishment. I feel welcomed and I feel that they are willing to help at any giving moment. I don’t like those establishments whose greetings are a bit over the top though. When you feel welcome, you tend to go back to the establishment often. You also find yourself greet people more often.

I think every establishment should give out some sort of chocolate, because chocolate makes everything better! Customers love to get something for nothing every once in a while. So, being greeted with a smile and a piece of chocolate is an awesome way to start shopping.

Greeters in businesses are a great idea. It makes you feel welcome and like your business is appreciated. No one wants to be ignored when they come into a business. It's the same with being helped. If I can't find assistance when I need it then I leave the store and go else where. You need to feel like your business is welcome.

I personally like being greeted at the door. It's nice to have someone say hi when you walk in. People need to learn to be more friendly to one another instead of so consumed in their own life they forget about the people around them. And in such a mega chain it establishes a personally connection. Makes you feel that even though it's a chain the people that work there still care about the people within their community.

I agree with you, greeting a customer at the door is a good practice, and a way to aknowledge people who want your business. Personally I want to be greeted, it makes me feel welcome and wanted, unlike some other stores where when I walk in no one says anything...alsmost like they are upset that they have to help you. Moes is kind of over the top, imagine eating there and if several people walk in during your stay there it would be a little annoying to hear loud greetings over and over.

Saying hi to customers as they walk in to a place of service/store is a great way to make the customer feel welcome, and aknowledged. Also, it creates a friendly atmosphere and helps the customer feel comfortable if they had a question or need for extra help, they could approach the staff memebers.

It's a good practice because working at a couple retail stores myself for a few years I had to do some certain greetings when customers came in. We did that because it gave the customer that sense of being welcomed and how much we appreciate their service to us and what we can do for them. Some customers liked it other hated it. But it's what we had to do and follow to keep our job. If I go a retail store today and get a greeting i will say thank you very much, and make sure they enjoy their job, since I was once in their shoes.

I think it's a good idea for stores to have greeters because it lets people know that they're welcome when they walk in. Larger stores like walmart or home depot greet them at the door, allow them to shop freely without bothering them, then say goodbye when they leave. This let's customers feel comfortable while shopping without feeling nagged by employees. I think it's important in smaller companies for the employee to promptly greet their customers and offer assistance as needed.

It allows the customer to feel welcomed, feel invited and feel like the they are wanted in the store. I've worked at stores where we must greet customers with a "Hello", and a smile. I did not mind it. It also opens room for the customer to ask questions

I don't think this is really a good or a bad thing except that, employees may feel as though it is redundant. Therefore, employees may not greet every customer with the same amount of enthusiasm, or may not greet all of the customers who walk in at all. greating some but not all customers enthusiastically may make some feel discriminated against. It does seam a little over the top since the employees are already required to serve every customer with kindness and respect.

I think it's nice when some greets you at the door, it makes you feel welcome. In some restaurants like RuSans the whole staff yells out a greeting. You kinda get scared at first but then get it, that the whole restaurant wasnt yelling at you but was greeting you. And that was unique and something that you would remember.

I like being greeted when I walk in a store. The Moe's is kinda over the top but still nice that someone acknowledges your presents. We greeted customers when I worked in retail and it makes the customer feel more welcome. Customer service is kinda lacking now, its like no one wants to be there working and deal with customers face to face. I work for a medical answering service now and I speak to everyone in a nice cheerful voice like i have a smile on my face even when they are being a big pain and hard to handle. So I still try to keep up good customer service over the phone because I dont want to speak with someone who sounds bored and dull. So I think it is a good practice to greet customers.

Greeting customers as they walk into an establishment is a great practice to follow. Who doesn't want to feel welcomed when walking in to shop or to have dinner? I love it! It creates a more friendly atmosphere and comfortable zone in the establishment. People knowing the employees of the store or restaurant are friendly, lets people know that the employees are there to assist you for whatever possible need you may have. It makes the experience so much more lively. I would never want the greetings from the employees to stop. I always love greeting them back. :)

Greetings are a good thing for a company because it is the first thing a customer hears when entering the establishment. This is important because it gives them something to draw back on when reflecting on their visit and raises the chance they will return for more visits to spend money.

If I walk into a place with great energy, chance are, I'll be in a good mood. I speak for all customers when I say we feel more uplifted when we are greeted at the door. 100. I work at walgreens and recently its been a new request for us to greet our customers with a "hi welcome to walgreens", when comming and a gentle "be well" when leaving. These greetings make ever customer feel welcome. But the only problem I have with it is by saying this to every customer it erases the concept of making every customer feel like a individual. To me that is a very important concept and something that should not be over looked when selling anything to someone who you would like to call a "customer".

I believe a greeting to be warm and welcoming. It shows appreciation for your business. Not only does it show apprciation it also is just a friendly greeting like waving to the guy that lives across from you even though you don't know him very well. Now, I find it very annoying when a crowd of employees yell at me when I crest a door opening. A friendly greeting and a handshake goes a long way, yelling at me "welcome to (fill in the blank)" only proves to annoy more often than it invites.

  103. I think it helps to remind us that we're dealing with other people when we walk through the doors. For some reason, people sometimes forget that the employees are human beings, and just treat them like robots almost, expecting them to do as they're told and like they aren't fazed when they use a harsh tone or are impatient. I wonder what caused this.

I've heard that when a customer is greeted at the door with eye contact and a smile, they're less likely to steal. In this sense, I'm surprised that Wal*Mart is getting rid of their greeters. It also seemed like a nice little job for people who otherwise have trouble getting work, such as the elderly. At any rate, I prefer to be greeted - it lets me know that the employees know I'm there.

  108. Well for me working at a retail store i say that having a greeter can come in handy in more ways then one. They can great the customer and make them feel welcomed, and make sure that the customer is not trying to steal an item on the way out of a store.. I work at Kroger Co. and we do not have a greeter or someone that checks if you stole something from us, this in my opinion makes us lose more money because of criminals taking all of our more expensive products.
