Viva la fiesta!

Over the last two weekends our area has held a variety of widely acclaimed festivals that drew visitors from near and far. In Atlanta we had the Dogwood, Arab and Big Shanty Festivals. Within a few hours drive South Pittsburg, TN and Vidalia, GA held award winning Cornbread and Vidalia Onion Festivals, respectively. The Georgia Renaissance Festival opened last week and continues until June in Fairburn, GA.

1) Other than pure profit for vendors, why are these events organized and attended?

2) What is your favorite fair or festival?

I think these events are organized and attended to because a lot of people like to experience different cultures and see how other people live their lives.

My favorite fair or festival has to be the Big Shanty Festival or the North Georgia State Fair.

I think that these festivals are arranged to let people experience the different cultures and there are some festivals that show what have happened in the past.

I have not yet been able to attend any recent festivals but I would have liked to attend the Big Shanty Festival. I was not able to go because I was working the weekend that it was happeneing. I wish that it could have been longer than just a weekend

The first thin that applies me to the fairs or festivls is the culture, as time is going very fast most of the people think they are loosing their fofathers culture, so these events takes the people in past and past always looks beautifull.

I dont have choice of a specific festivle , but all the events that's give me fun are my favourits, in my country Pakistan we have a festivle called, MEALA CHERAGHA, is my favourite one.

  11. Ithink these events ar put on because people have pride in their culture and want to celebrate and share it with everybody else. I think some events are put on because of tradition or just to have an excuse to party!I moved here from Phoenix,AZ where they held what was called the Ostrich Festival every year. This was always a site to see. There were rides, live rock bands, bungi jumping, and games. There were no actual ostrichs so I don't know where it got it's name but it was always fun!

  13. I believe these event happen because they are a little piece of history for everyone to enjoy. Also the people that take extreme pride in them it is a way for them to remind people that bread has not always came sliced thats what i believe for the Rennasaince anyway but for Vadialla onions and big shanty just a time to get together and enjoy something that everyone or those people have in common. My favorite festival is I have no idea cause i only been to the rennasance and it was okay so im not sure havent been to many to really tell whath i like and what not.

  14. I think that people in a general area who have the same common interests figured that getting together and having a festival would be a great way to share their love of (whatever it may be) with the rest of the community.
I have only been to the renaissance festival, but that was a long time ago and I really don't remember it that well...

**You should give extra credit to people who go out and attend one of these types of events. We can take pictures and write a paragraph or something about how the event relates to society or something! =)

  15. I think these events are organized to give the city or town a sense of togetherness. IT also draws attraction from other cities. I don't have a favorite because I try to stay out of large crowds. I did work at the Taste of Acworth last year and probably be there again this year.

An Ostrich Festival sounds very interesting! I agree that festivals are a great way to celebrate our history and culture. I attend the Big Shanty Festival every year and it is a fun thing to attend outside with the family. My kids love watching the parade and jumping on the inflatables. I enjoy walking around and looking at all the crafts people have made to sell. People dress up as if they were in the Civil War and reenact what it was like to live back then. I would say that it is one of my favorite festivals to go to.

I believe these festivals are organized and attended each year to celebrate certain interests, whether it be cultural or just enjoyable in general. They allow people to gather and participate in their interests with others and also allows people who may have not been exposed to certain things, to actively experience new activities/people.

My favorite festival would be the Renaissance festival. My firends and I dress and go see what there is to see. I look forward to going this summer. :)

My favorite fair is one that has rides. Like the north georgia fair and this little fair Jasper georgia holds every year. The rides are so much fun.

I think they are organized and attended to share different cultures in a way that everyone can enjoy; through food and different cultural experiences. My family goes to a lot of festivals and I have to say that my favorite is the apple festival! I LOVE apples and at the apple festival people get really creative with all the different dishes they make with all the varieties of apples…yummy!

Well I do suppose that they are attended because people enjoy interaction with others all enjoying the same thing. Meeting strangers is always easier at these kind of events. Plus the competitive events that take place are easy ways to kinda show off to other people.

My favorite event would have to be Z Dayz! A rather large amount of Nissan Z car owners get together at Fontana Mountain Resort on the Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina. Usually around 200 - 250 cars spend the weekend driving around an 11 mile road with 324 90 degree turns at extremely unsafe speeds (like 55 mph), squealing tires, blaring music, and the windows down with screaming heads out of them. After a long day of wasting gas and losing our voices we all get together in the evening for a big dinner...and then we get drunk as hell!!! (but no driving of course). There are events like best and worst exhaust (mine came in 2nd for worst exhaust last year, bragging rights!!!), best show car, fastest car, and best sound system. 2 years ago they released the new Nissan Skyline GTR at the event and we all got to test drive it before anyone else, that car is sick! We all show our cars off to eachother, the elderly cars tend to stick together and because they aren't owned by preppy wannabe racers we usually chill with them. They're all cool guys and they offer some good advice for our own vehicles. Then we race a few 350Zs and put them in their place before we head back home.
I won't say it isn't a dangerous event and we are warned not too speed on the tail of the dragon but we all do it anyways, no one wants to be called a princess at Z dayz! Although there have been a few wrecks regarding some 350Zs driving into trees or just off the road, there have been no deaths and no other kind of Z in an accident. Am I biased against 350Zs? You betcha!!!

Warning: Event not for the boring, driving Ms. Daisy, wrapped in styrofoam driver. Not suitable for children under 18 years of age. If you are pregnant or have heart issues you should first consult your physician prior to having more flags of fun than 6 Flags!!!

I'm not exactly sure if this is considered a fair or festival but it is open to the public, you do have to buy little tickets for the food, they do have prizes you can win, and it is pretty much the only thing I go to as far as events are concerned.

    Taylor,

These events are organize to make people aware of different foods, organizations, and peoples nationalities in all. Poeple that are interested in learning about their culture activities and foods can be important to most people. Especially Religious events parents want to influnece their children about belief in background.
I have been only to two festivals in my life. A Jesus exhibit festival and Apple festival in Ellijay. I loved both of the exhibits. Though the Apple festival is every year. I love the Apple festival because its interesting how people make so many creative ideas. The Jesus exibit was amazing with all middle eastern influences in their designs of pottery and cultural foods. I do remember the Renaissance festival as well it was as appealing to me though. Surrounded by bugs, outdoors. The Apple festival is open grass land compared to the Renaissance surrounded by trees.

I'm sorry I was unable to finish my original comment. The Freaknik festival was a joke. Anyway according to wikipedia, a festival is an event, usually and ordinarily staged by a local community, which centers on and celebrates some unique aspect of that community. My favorite festivals are the West Indian and Puerto Rican day festivals/parades in New York City! Since I'm down here in atl I attend the West Indian Parade and festival in atl on Memorial Day weekend. I love the food, music, art, costumes, and dancing. All festivals are educational and fun for the whole family.

I also love the North Georgia State Fair! As a kid I loved to go to the fair for the rides, but now my enjoyment comes from seeing the excitement on my children's faces and definitely the food! 38. I think those festivals are organized to help people get rid of their ignorance about other people's cultures, get rid of their fear of the unknown, therefore their hatred feelings towards strangers and educate them a little bit about openness, friendliness, and acceptance. I love those festivals, and the music festival is one of the best, where you enjoy different sort of music like Reggae, the drums and la Rumba or la Samba. Besides you get to have a taste of different kind of food from everywhere, met nice people from around the world. It's just awesome.

  39. I haven't attende yet those festival mentioned a above, so I really don't know what it looks like. The festival I attended since I came here was the Apple festival. I think the reason why there are many people and vendor attended the festival is to exchange their product and some are to earn money, and to those who came from other country, I? think we jut wanted to experience American culture and I want to taste the food specially in the festival. For now, my favorite festival is Apple festival ;-), the apple cider home made is very good.

I love going to festivals of almost every kind. I think the reason they are organized is to bring a sense of community in some cases, showcase cultures in others. The main reasons that people attend is undoubtablly curiosity. We want to see what it is all about. I am sure that Kelly was curios as to why they would have a festival for ostrich. Right? Then, of course, there is the food. Turkey legs, funnel cakes, caramel apples, even steak on a stick!
I love the Rennaisance Festival. Geogia has a good one, but they are in every state. A lot of the silversmiths and swordsmen travel from fair to fair. The food is awsome. My boys love the fact that there is a kissing wench! The exception being my 14 year old who gets embarrassed now.

I feel that such events are organized and attended not only because people as a whole like to experience other culures, but also that it is in societies best interest to bring people together as a whole to share experiences; maybe to provide a better understanding of one another. My favorite event to attend was thursday in the square in downtown buffalo. It begins memorial day weekend and continues through until labor day weekend. It takes place every thursday at 7pm. There is live music right outside in the square; from cyndi laupper, to the spin doctors, and even the beach boys. Whether or not I liked the music it was a fun place to go after work to meet up with friends and have a few drinks. It definatly brought the community together in one place to have a good time; and also to appreciate our neighbors and where we live. It gave is all something to have in common.

For example in Colombia we had a light festival it is our way of sharing our culture with othes and celebrating out heritage. The light festival is in a river, the lights are placed above the river and every years they have different desgins. This festival is really popular in Colombia and everybody from other cities and countries travel just to see it!

  47. I think the festivals are great ways for people that are like minded to come together and share amongst themselves. It's also a way for people who aren't in the loop to come and experience something new. I love attending the Oktober Fest in Helen. It's totally outside my culture since I'm African American and it's totally about Bavarian and German culture but there is a common factor and that's the love of beer.

  48. I like the local Kennesaw General Festival, which used to be known as "Kennesaw Days." I enjoy walking around and looking at all of the arts and crafts that people do. It makes a fun atmosphere and it is really cool to talk to all of the people to find out where they all come from. One lady who was an artist, was here all the way from Wyoming. She said she was travelling around to a bunch of fairs and crafts shows all around the country for the whole year... I thought that was pretty cool. I didn't have any money, so I wasn't able to buy anything, but if I'd have had 6 bucks, i'd have bought one of her photos or painted pictures of wild life. She apparently had travelled all over the world taking pictures of animals. Also pretty cool.

  51. Other than pure profit, I would say the events are a time to celebrate a common interest. Everyone will at sometime or another make money in odd ways or ways some would say is not "right". But all in all, I would have to say most of these events are occupied with people that in some small way share a common interest in the subject of the event. For instance, the Renaissance Festival, people almost have to have an interest in that time period to go and be apart of it. Those who do, give a lot of time and some sacrifice very comfortable clothes for not so comfortable in the spirit of the festivities.
And I would have to say the Renaissance Festival is my favorite to date.
