Soc Fest Fall 2013

Greetings! Namaste! Chao! Saludos! Merhaba! Howdy!

What did you find most interesting about Soc Fest? Was it the display or story of a classmate, or was it information you discovered about yourself and your culture as you worked on the project?

  1. I think the most interesting thing about Soc Fest was definitely some of he other people's culture. Some new so much about their heritage and had old documentations too. I thought those were cool to look at. Also some people's interest that were part of their culture was shocking. For example the guy who did the poem reading I would have never imagined him to like poetry. However, I think it is really cool. That shows how we as humans make assumptions and they are not always right.

  2. I agree with Ashley Huskin. "Don't judge a book by it's cover" was definitely emphasized at Soc Fest. Learning about peoples heritage and subcultures was fascinating, and then comparing them with my own was surprisingly enlightening. I was not expecting cosplay to be present at Soc fest, props to the guy (who's name escape me at the moment) on wearing a costume there, awesome! Foods from around the world was a highlight for me, a lot of them were delicious and interesting. All in all, the whole event was very thought provoking and a small change of pace. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I had fun learning things about my class mates that I wouldn't have known from just sitting in a classroom together. And I was impressed and surprised with all the different cultures and hobbies on display. The amount of cornbread was also off the chain, maybe Georgia should be the cornbread state instead of the peach state. The most interesting thing I learned during the event was that several of the traditions in my culture were also traditions used in other cultures in other countries. I have give a shout out to the people who performed on stage, that takes some courage, so thanks!

I agree with everyone- the Soc Fest was EXCELLENT I meet a lot of people, new different cultures and seeing people from different perspective. It was truly magnificent I have much respect for it, what love mostly is about the stories of their culture because you find out about their past which makes them who they are and who we are. Everybody's the same but with different perspective and background in life, which makes us different in many ways.

I was really surprised at how I could relate to some of the other students life experiences. I loved the creativity of some of the projects. One that I really enjoyed was a journal that was all art, no words. It stood out to me. Some people really put a lot of effort into their projects and made me think of things I could have done differently (Leah B). I liked the spirit in the room too. Everyone was so friendly and open. I was really nervous about this project and ended up meeting some really cool people.

  6. I think the most interesting part of the Soc Fest was to be able to learn the culture of the other students. Before the fest I was wondering what it was going to be like, and I was amazed at how many different backgrounds and cultures there were at the fest. I think the one I enjoyed the most was the Brazilian guy who did Capoera, it was so interesting and so awesome to look! I also enjoyed researching about my culture because it reminded me how blessed and lucky I am to be where I am from.

I think the most interesting thing about the Soc. Fest was learning about other students cultures. I never really thought about how different everyone's culture is. It amazes me that people from different countries end up in Georgia. It is so cool and interesting how different everyone grew up. I really enjoyed the festival and I learned new things.

On the contrary, I was surprised to see so many home grown southerners that Georgia has! It is really fabulous to see how their experiences of being in one state most of their lives compared to my own.

I would have to agree with Ashley Huskins. I catch myself looking at other people not knowing where they come from or what they have been through. It was amazing to know that other students knew so much about their culture. I only wish I could know so much about mine. I just know the basics.

It was real interesting to learn about the culture of people at CTC. I was surprised to find out many people who live in Georgia were not originally from Georgia and have an extensive cultural background. Food was a perfect way to show off your culture!

I enjoyed looking at the different clothing and food; even though I did not ask questions or try the food; I was a bit awkward. I felt like my display was juvenile in comparison.

I was surprised to see such diverse cultures and subcultures at the Soc Fest. I learned so much about other students cultures, from the Native Americans to the Spanish cultures. I presented the subcultures of the United States and I can say that the plain greasy cheeseburger I brought in failed the test buds of many in comparison to the richly authentic samples of many other unique cultures. I loved seeing the clothing of the other cultures and the different values that generations before us believed in.

I enjoyed most about the Soc. Fest. was seeing, tasting and learning about other cultures. I also enjoyed seeing other peoples displays of how they chose to show off their culture. I especially liked not only learning other peoples cultures but getting to taste some of their foods from their cultures. It truly gave you a great taste to all the senses not just visually. On top of it all I especially enjoyed learning a lot about the culture I chose since it was different then the Italian culture I had grown up around. It was a very positive experience all around.

  15. Leah Botello 47---- I thought the most interesting thing about the SocFest was seeing all of the different cultures that people have living in the same area!! The backgrounds of some people were so interesting, one woman I was observing had connections in her family to Martin Luther King, Jr....I found that so incredibly fascinating. Just seeing the many different cultures and subcultures just proves that everyone has a story if we are willing to read it. I absolutely love hearing people's stories so this was a lot of fun!

I agree, I'm always interested to hear how people from such vastly differently backgrounds that are so far apart could result in the same place. I thought it was refreshing as well to see so many so proud of where they come from and so open to sharing it with all of us. I think my favorite part was the family pictures that people provided- self proclaimed sucker for nostalgia.

  16. Leah Botello 47 in response to Ashley Huskins----- I agree completely about stereotyping other people. The SocFest did make me see others in a different way; we have no idea who others are or what their cultures/backgrounds are like until we start to open communications with them. And getting to know people who have the same interests and beliefs as you is always a lot of fun!

I'm super shy in new situations so I was somewhat worried about Soc Fest, however I think it went great. I think the most interesting thing at Soc Fest was learning about other people’s stories and heritages. It was so fascinating to see how diverse everyone is. I am fascinated with ancestry and to see everyone's pride about their culture and families, it was super fun.

SocFest over all I believe was a great way to better get to know our academic peers. Upon arriving I was a little surprised that so many people brought Bibles as their physical representations but when I gave it some thought and the fact that we live in the bible belt South also provided some clarity. I thought it was interesting that people tended to either focus on just their heritage or sub-culture, it would have been cool to have been given a little more insight into who they are instead of just where they come from. We as people are the sum of our parts- not just our past or present.

I really liked seeing the effort other students put into their projects, and I wish I could've mailed down more of my family's papers and pictures here on time. So, instead I had to do something else and felt like sometimes I was just throwing things together. People did such a great job, especially with all of the food and displays that were put together. I enjoyed meeting another person who was involved in dog rescue and that was great to experience. I also enjoyed learning more about cultures I did not know much about, especially ones on the south and GA - I'm from the Philadelphia area and grew up there, so it was cool to see what people here grow up around.

I really enjoyed Soc Fest it was very entertaining and knowledgeable. I enjoyed looking at all the other students projects. I liked learning knew things about my classmates as well as others. When I had first heard about Soc Fest I automatically opted to do the 3-5 page paper, because I would not have to talk about anything or anyone I would have had to write the paper and turn it in. The most interesting thing in the Soc Fest 2013 was the way people turn out and what their culture looks like. I kind of like the things they brought like food, cloths and a detail explanation on paper about their culture. One fascinating thing is, people get to know their culture through ancestry and how their ancestors emigrate and the people start socializing.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself during Soc. Fest, so much so, that it was hard to pull away to take my proctored test. I enjoyed the displays and the story of my classmates. Prior to Soc. Fest, I’ve only read blogs from my classmates, which gave me some idea of whom each person’s is according to how they respond to our weekly post. But, since Soc. Fest, I see we are a very colorful bunch with so many different cultures representing my class. While, at Soc. Fest, I tried several different types of foods that each person brought, the food was very good I might add. I especially enjoyed speaking to many of my classmates regarding their cultures. I also thought a lot of long hard work went into the presentation I viewed. I even enjoyed the performances.

The Soc Fest was an enjoyable event. The projects I viewed were very good. We are blessed with many cultures in GA. The question I often ask, "Why are we still dealing with prejudices in this state. Soc Fest was a good beginning toward unity. We can learn from each other, instead, turning on each other. My pray is let us be real with other. Know matter what each of us look like on the outside, we all belong to the race, after all, this is Sociology.

It amazed me that some people who seemed somewhat mainstream, as we all sometimes do, turned out to be the most interesting people. Some of the people had so much to say about their culture and so many things to share. The most interesting thing about the Soc Fest was reading about others people's culture. Not only I was reading but also tasting their food from the culture they presented. As I was walking past a bunch of different culture poster boards, I felt that I was in a different world by each one I stopped by to read. I did not expect the Soc Fest to be so fun! My personal favorite was the lady who did the Southern Culture. I didn't know much about it because I just moved to the south two years ago. Her whole table was filled with southern food, jokes, and fun facts. It was a wonderful experience and so many polite people respected everybody's culture. The Soc Fest taught me so much about different cultures from Haiti to Pakistan.

I was so surprised to see so many different cultures and backgrounds in this area. I say that because being from California I grew up with so many cultures and being at Soc Fest reminded me of home. I really enjoyed learning more about certain cultures and my daughter got a chance to see "difference" as well. I love that and will continue to expose her to this. I was worried first hearing about this project that I didn’t have enough culture or traditions to share. I soon found out that I couldn’t choose easily from the many traditions we had in our family to share. It brought my family closer just getting together to dig up our family culture and traditions. This is one project I really appreciated.

I totally agree with you. It was a worthwhile project from the normal class and books day. Getting to know each other and their culture was key. I will add that sampling foods was my best part.

  64. Unfortunately I could not make it Soc Fest. I wish I could have gone to learn some new things about different people, I think my favorite part would have been food sampling.

The best part of Soc Fest to me would have been the interaction with other people, getting to see how classmates were applying the material from the textbook in their cultural analysis, and how many of the participants appeared to have a genuine appreciation for culture -- whether their own or others.

I agree with you. It was difficult to decide exactly what to do the project on, considering the various options. A very fun, intriguing, and all around enjoyable project.

I found the soc fest to be more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. I really enjoyed the people that got up on stage and made a presentation. Through the process of completing my own project I found that we really dont have that much culture in our household anymore except for our cooking. There were lots of really good displays of southern culture that were creatively done.

    1. I agree with you Matt. Soc fest was much more enjoyable than I anticipated. The people who got up with actual presentations were great. I thought I would be original with the "southern" thing but Im also glad to see that Im not the only one who doesnt know about their history.

That was also one of the best things about soc fest to me was the food. I love food so it was very interesting to test all of the different peoples food. The lady with the table full of southern culture now that was awesome and very thought out. I thought she did the best job!

I appreciated how much in common I had with my fellow Sociology classmates concerning my heritage. I enjoyed the food displays and the few performances that were given. Though it may sound conceited my favorite part that I found interesting was when people were asking to get pictures with me in my cosplay outfit. It gives you that "I'm Awesome" feeling.

I would have to disagree with you on the accusation that the most culture we have is in our cooking. While cooking was a major subject in SocFest, it was not the only one. There were plenty of other things such as music, literature, family heirlooms, and other important artifacts that were not edible.

  71. I was amazed and a little jealous at some of the displays of other students. I have a great family and history that I am aware of but to look around at some of these students with so much knowledge of their culture was pretty neat. I did enjoy some of the stories and seeing actual pieces of their families past right there was awesome. It really made me want to do some serious digging into my family history.

Soc Fest wasn't too surprising for me. Many people did their projects on a "culture culture" (a country they're from) and I saw a few about sub cultures...I had done mine on motherhood and felt that it was for the most part ignored. Oh well...Not many people really do understand all that goes into motherhood and appreciate it unless they are one. I also found it discouraging that there were projects that were for the most part half-a** such as a poster made of a tiny cardboard box...really? All in all it was a nice experience, but I guess I expected more.

I didnt really know what to expect from Socfest. I've never attended a festival like this. I was surprised CTC had so many students from such different backgrounds. It was something out of the norm being around so many different personalities. it was also a great way to connect with your classmates.

Soc Fest was interesting. I liked seeing everyones different cultures. It is really amazing how diverse a group of people can be under the layer of what you see everyday. I also like being able to look back at all my families pictures and memories.

I didn't really know what to expect from Soc Fest. I participated in multicultural day in high school but was unsure if it would be similar to my past experience. I found many of the displays were very interesting as well as the food a lot of people brought. One display that stood out the most to me was the Rock n Roll display. It was magnificent and shows her dedication and love to the art. It is awesome to see how passionate people are about their heritage as well as their likes and interests. I definitely enjoyed the experience with my fellow classmates and hope to pop in see much more every year.

I didn't know what to expect from Soc Fest. I have never been to anything like it. It was great to see so many people willing to share with others all kinds of things. The thing that I like the most about Soc Fest was seeing everyone's culture and where they come from. I also enjoyed the live performances that were performed and the things that people enjoyed doing. It was also a new experience.

I loved the experience at Soc Fest . All the different taste of food, the attire on display and the photos from four generations of grandfathers. It was a good experience especially seeing people willing to talk about their culture. I enjoyed learning about other other cultures and this opened my eyes to the diversity of people.

I absolutely LOVED walking around and reading everyone's history. I was able to meet two young women, both from Germany. One of their family's was part of the Nazi regime, while the other escaped to America to avoid persecution. Hearing the way they grew up, where they came from, even what they ate was so exciting to me. However, I also enjoyed learning about my own family heritage. I was able to actually LEARN about where I came from and where I live now. It really makes you step back and look at the big picture of things!

I agree! It's amazing to see how diverse people can be, even when they live in the same area. And the live performances were great! I could tell that the Brazilian had a lot of fun with his dance and instrument. And the singer had no fear in showing people what he loves. How amazing is that? I would never have the nerve to stand in front of 100+ people and belt it out. Good for them!

Soc fest was really fun. I had a nice time meeting people, learning about their cultures, and ways to prepare some food. I also learnt that some tribes have similar cultures. I was also fascinated how a student documented her great father's history. Students display was also meaningful.

I think the most interesting part was getting down to my own roots. Sure, it was interesting to look at all the different cultures and compare my history to theirs, but the self discovery was very revealing for me. Its not something I would have really ever gone into detail about if I hadn't been assigned a project on it.

I enjoyed that part too. I did not realize that I was really making a project explaining who I really was. I appreciated this project very much when I finished my tri-fold board because I defined who I really am. At this time in life that is very important for our own growth and development.

The variety of cultures and sub-cultures from different parts of the world including the United States, was a sight to see. The event was put together very well. I probably would not have ask too many questions, but while doing my assignment and asking questions I learned a lot about different cultures and how they were similar to my own.

  91. What struck me most about the SocFest was how much care and effort people put into displaying themselves. I could tell that many of the participants had put many hours into carefully crafting what they wanted to present at the festival. I particularly enjoyed watching them as they stood or sat awkwardly behind their tables. I could see a look of concern on some of their faces as they seemed to wonder if what they thought was a good idea at home was not such a great idea now. I also felt a low level of tension in the room; as if at any moment someone was going to do or say something inappropriate. I had a great time.
I can see how a sociologist could use this event to come up with some really good, original research topics.

I enjoyed the cultural diversity of SocFest. I began talking with a woman from Nigeria and discovered that a lot of our foods were similar. I found out new things about my culture through other cultures. I enjoyed the enthusiasm of some of the people there as when I first arrived I had no idea what it would be like so I was skeptical. I could tell that many of the people there had put countless hours into their presentations so they wanted for it to be one of the best.

  93. TinaP91 I enjoyed walking around and learning about other cultures. I also got to know a few people there and discuss how their cultures have affected their lives. It was definitely a plus getting to taste all types of different foods. I found out that there are many different cultured food places not too far from me and am excited about going and visiting them. Learning more about people different from us makes us more worldly. Being able to connect through food and certain holidays and such makes great connections to help bring people closer together. I also got to learn more about my family's history in doing this project.

  95. I was unable to make it to Soc fest due to a conflict with my class schedule. However, if I could have showed up I would have brought items from my subculture 'competitive gaming'. I play Starcraft II competitively and also enjoy watching it. I would have brought a few of my team jersey, clothing the players wear with sponsors on them while they play. A mouse and keyboard, tools that allow is to play. A person with a better mouse or keyboard could win over someone lacking one. lastly I would have brought the most important part my computer. I have a custom built rig that I use to play my game at the utmost performance.

It was very interesting to learn about the different things my class mates and people I had never even met before were into. It just goes to show how different everyone is and even though you may see some of them a couple times a week you still don't really know them that well. What I liked most was all the creative displays people had up and how much effort they put into it. it was nice to see how people really got into sharing things about them and putting their selves out there.

Alexis Goodie 84- I agree with most of the post….the most interesting thing was other peoples culture, and how they presented…. the food and also some of their personal hobbies were amazing…A lot of people went over and above with their show cases…I saw people taking pictures with some of the people that even dressed up as characters…thought that was pretty cool. Another thing I always enjoy when it comes to other Cultures is food and that is because I love food and am always interested in trying new different foods. Over all I liked that it was for sure a good family event…I took my four year old Son and my Sister and they really enjoyed themselves and were amazed by some of the things they seen.
