Kicks Causing Chaos

Shoppers from coast to coast were arrested in pursuit of a new pair of Air Jordan 11 Retro Concords shoes. There were arrests in Georgia for violent outbreaks, and a woman who left her young children unattended as she tried to get the coveted shoes.

Why do you think that a pair of shoes can cause so much chaos?

Materialism-The shoes didn't cause chaos, it's the people strong desire for it. Their obsession for that shoe made it their top priority in their mind. Allowing them to do whatever it takes to get it, which I believe is senseless and irresponsible. What I see is just another pair of shoes that will go out of style, and it's not worth getting in trouble for. If people wanted something very badly they should try their best to get it the right way.

I totally agree. It's not the fancy shoe. It's the materialistic people that believe they have to keep up with everyone and/or be the first to get the latest thing out. I feel the same way. They are just another pair of overpriced shoes.

I believe that these shoes created so much chaos because it is a status symbol. People want audacious possessions that are either expensive or hard to get, which makes it desired by many. The privileged customer can flash off their new, rare kicks while some spectate and dream of a pair of their own. It is pretty sad that this much anarchy was caused over shoes, imagine a world where priorities existed!

I agree, and I think it's pretty sad that people really treat Jordans as a status symbol. When I think of real status symbols, Jordans do not come to mind. In my opinion it's just childish and irresponsible.

I Completely agree with you. I believe people are trying to feel like they can have more than others, friends or family, I don't think they are creating so much chaos because they are Jordan's fans.

I completely agree with you. People wanted something so bad that they bypassed all rules in order to obtain a pair of shoes. I believe that causing this much chaos over a pair of shoes is ridiculous. At least I know that the shoes I purchased will last just as long, cost way less, and not cause me injury or a ride in the back of a cop car.

    2. I completely agree @ Oneisha F. Fashion Trends come and go and they come and go very quickly. I also say ignorance. How can you risk your life, freedom, and dignity for something that will give you nothing in return. Most people who behave like this for the latest pair of Jordans probably can't afford them or should be putting that money to something more important. I think it's degrading. You don't see this problem with people who spend the night outside or all morning at the Apple store waiting for the new Iphone.

It reminds me of when my friend stood in line really early to get the Grand Theft Auto game. I guess some people like having what they don't need. My mom gets a new phone every year, maybe that's normal, but it seems like she talks about getting a new one every few months. She has the iPhone 5 now.

I think that the cause of the chaos is a mixture of the consumerism, materialism and selfishness that permeates our society. In the article it states that someone was stabbed, that is just insane. They compared it to Black Friday, which is also something I have never understood. I have never and will never participate in the free-for-all known as Black Friday, where it seems that people turn into savages just so they can get something like an Xbox, television, or shoes on sale. It is very disheartening to know that when people are put into these situations it almost always ends up in a ruckus.

    1. TinaP91 @Brittany S46 The main problem is people will be people. I have participated in a few black friday events. However I go to places that attract less attention. I dont go to malls or places that are extremely expensive because you know some one is going to try to get a great deal. Which comes from the point that some people love hanouts and dont want to work hard so they can just buy these things on a normal day,.

I believe it is so much chaos because people are always trying to out beat the next man. They want to be the 1st to say that got it and no one else has them yet. It's ridicoulous. People do so much for material things. They don't run out to vote like this. Everyone loves Jordans, but will those Jordan's get that mother out of jail who left her kids unattended, or get the fighters out of jail. They need to wake up. Nothing but salvation is worth that fight to me.

I think the reason for this chaotic mess is because society causes us to worry about materialistic items and our image towards one another. Media plays a huge role in this mess. On TV you could see tons of superstars wearing the latest kicks and the latest trends. Superstars are often put on pedestals for the common people to adore. That puts pressure on the common people causing them to want to have the glamorous life like a superstar. Common people are willing to do crazy things for the materialistic items such as those shoes.

  8. TinaP91 The fact of the matter is all people have wants. Some people will make an honest living and appropriately work hard to buy the things they want. Others will lie, cheat, and steal. This is just a point that shows there are different types of people. I think it is ridiculous to do this for some shoes. People are too hungry for attention and to feel better than others.

Materialism has taken over the majority of America. This story reminds me of Black Friday, which is an even worse situation because right after we celebrate a day of being thankful for what we have there is a day spent yelling and running around like chickens with our heads cut off over sales. People want the shoes so they can get compliments and look stylish.

I believe that the shoes showed so much chaos because people would do anything to have material things. People act like retards when it comes to having the newest things. This reminds me of when people stand in long lines in the freezing cold to purchase a new item that has come out.

  13. It's the message behind the shoes really. Personally, I never found these Air Jordan's attractive. But having the next best shoe, especially Air Jordans, will somehow give those consumers a way to be accepted; social acceptance pertaining to fashion.

This trend for Jordans has been like this for years and years, it's tiresome, and quite frankly, idiotic. But yeah, I'd feel exclusive buying a pair of $200 shoes, but was it really worth it? But like some people stated, it goes back to wants and needs.

I find this ridiculous. People have their priorities seriously screwed up if their doing crazy stuff to just get a pair of shoes. 16. Leah Botello 47- All I can say is this is absolutely ridiculous. I have no idea why someone would be so careless as to leave young children unattended or be violent in order to get a pair of name brand shoes. What is wrong with people? I would say that we could blame the media and Hollywood for making name brands so appealing to the point that this nation has become so materialistic. But in reality, people have a mind of their own and can make a judgment as to whether or not it is really worth it to neglect your children in order to get the latest style. This is beyond infuriating. I am very much into fashion, and I do have an attraction to certain name brand clothes. But I am a mother first, so putting my wants above my child's needs is out of the question, so is resorting to violence and potentially hurting someone else. It just isn't worth it. My opinion as to why people cause so much chaos over a pair of shoes is lack of common sense.

  17. Leah B. 47 in response to Kayla F. - You are absolutely right: Materialism has taken over America. I believe people need to wake up and realize what is actually important. It is hard when we see things that everyone else has and we want it to. Its absurd to think that people could cause that much chaos over something as stupid as a pair of shoes. People need a serious reality check if their main concern for the day is to do anything in their power to buy a pair of shoes. If people were smart they would realize that if the shoes are that popular the company is going to keep producing them if they can keep selling them. There is no reason for people to start fights and stabbing people to make sure they get a pair of shoes. Overall its just a status symbol, but it is in no way a reason to start a riot outside of a department store.

I actually think that the fact that adults would behave this way is ridiculous. Especially in regards to the mother leaving her small child unattended, Are you kidding me? They are shoes, they are a trend- something that will come and go out of style like anything else. It's pure consumerism and selfishness that people would actually start to hurt each other over such things. To be honest it's sounds like most of these people need something actually productive to do with their time. Although I must admit when posed with the question I was quite tempted to answer with, "Well, they're fly as hell of course."

Two things stand out to me:

    1. Why would ANYONE buy $180 FOR SHOES?
    2. Getting arrested over a pair of shoes is by far the most pathetic thing I have heard lately.

Its all in the brand name people. That's why they are going nuts about it. They gotta have the latest and greatest shoe. Its all about your status! If you got the new Air Jordan's, then your cool. I can buy 5 pairs of shoes for < $20 at Walmart + other essentials. I would NEVER spend that much on shoes that will eventually wear and get dirty!

I agree, shoes to me are not worth that much money either, even when I had previous jobs. Now, being unemployed, I am unable to buy non-essentials like the newest, brand name shoes and it still does not bother me at all. I believe the chaos was part of the brand name hype and part each person's responsibility. Adults should know better not to leave their kids behind or cause violence to break out. Once their judgement is overtaken by the material object hype, it seems like anything can happen. These people should be held responsible for what they did and learn ways to curve their negative reactions to new products. It is not worth risking lives and hurting others, ever.

It does not surprise me that people would do foolish things such as fight one-another in order to give Micheal Jordan $230 of their hard-earned money; and all they get back is one pair of shoes. Our society is loaded with selfish materialism that pollutes the people's minds. This is in no way blaming Jordan for this, all he did was create an enterprise for himself and he is filthy rich as a result. These shoes will probably be in style for a few years to come, but the brand name is not the cause. It is the individuals who have upside-down priorities that would fall for the idea that a shoe can make them anything different than what they truly are. That is an internal issue that has been influenced by the culture we reside in.

Shoes causing this much chaos is pathetic. People really need to start getting their priorities in order. If someone really loves or is into sneakers, that's fine, because there's a number of things I love to buy. Although, certainly not all of these crazy people are true sneakerheads. They just want it to show that they have and could get it. I can't say I'll never pay that much for shoes, because I love buying heels and they cost around the same price as Jordans. I don't see myself camping out or busting anyone upside the head for my heels though.

I can see both sides to this story. I would do anything for my children's happiness including waiting in Black Fridays horrendous lines. But putting your child in potential danger to coincide with American Fashion is out of control. This mentality of the next best thing and the grass is always greener is absolutely anarchy. I think these shoes could cause this much chaos because they are one of the most known brand of shoe around the world. I think in all groups, there is something they consider of value or represents a higher status to them. I don't understand why people stand in line to pay hundreds of dollars for cell phones just to be one of the first to have it. So many of these items lose there monetary value after purchased. And, you know that a new one is coming out in just a few months. Most of the time it's all about being or appearing to be better than someone else. We miss out on so many great things we already poses because we are trying to keep up with what someone else has or has made us think will make our lives so much better. The chaos from this particular shoe comes from Michael Jordan. Everyone wants to be like Mike. Most inner city kids grow up dreaming to have a pair of Jordan's. The shoe is expensive and they think once they have a pair they are cool. I still can't believe things like this still go on for these shoes after 20 plus years. Most of the shoes that come out present day already came out once. I remember having a pair of Jordan's when Space Jam came out. The same pair I had then just came out again 5 years ago. I have had over 15 different pair of Jordan's in my life time. To me they're are just another name brand of shoes.

  32. It is very simple why a pair of shoes can cause so much drama and chaos, it's called materialism. We live in a society where we "need" to have the latest of everything. We "need" the latest phone, shoes, music, etc. We live in a society where if you don't have the "latest" then you're looked down upon, and it's sad to see how many people let that affect their lives. Going back to the materialism, people can never be satisfied with what they have, they need more. We are the kind of race that we don't care if we are left with no money but as long as we have the latest of something we'll be happy, whether it affects our loved ones or not. We are guilty of this in one way or another.

In my opinion these shoes cause so much chaos because well there a popular brands a known one actually that’s durable and look good but in the end are just shoes that will be next seasons sale. It is also a new fad and material culture for today’s generation. However I believe the main reason why it causes more harm than happiness is because everybody wants to be the first to wear it and say they bought it. It causes havoc because a person who has the mentality that if I don’t rush through I will not get the shoes and because of this it causes chaos within the line and it also influences everyone else in order to get the shoe first. People only care about this just so they can look good in society if they are the ones with the newest and latest fashion out their but this causes chaos when trying to buy them first.

It’s not the shoes that cause the chaos, but the individuals who is creating this craze over being the first to own the shoes. I do not think the chaos over Jordan’s shoes is not different than, Black Friday. It is no different than individuals fighting of the latest Apple iPhone. Nor is it any different than brides-to-be fighting over a wedding gown for under $100.00. Many of you have stood in long lines with mobs fighting over the latest toy for your child for Christmas. Parents are guilty buying these shoes thinking that their children will improve in school. My reason as regard why a pair of shoes can cause a chaos is simply self-esteem and the drive for ego.
And these are what society create in the mind of people who share the same value like them.
Some group of people allow modern fashion to elude their mind, the self-esteem that they were the first people that wore those fashion characterized their behavior that they place so much belief in acquiring those things that will soon lose value within a short time. The drive for ego can been seen how they compete within themselves, who gets in first. For the singular reason why a mother will leave her child in a car to go and compete with others who get in first shows what kind of society she lives.

On a serious note, I cannot fathom that extent of brand loyalty. It could be that owning Jordan shoes is the buyers' guilty pleasure which I can understand. However, a guilty pleasure that is worth a fight and death becomes a problem behavior that maybe medicalized as psychosis.

How idiotic. A Name brand shoe; or anything can poison one's out look on life. Everyone wants to have the "new" "improved" "expensive" things- no matter what it takes to get them. Like others above said; it's a status the want in society, and materialism is the addiction that craves the status.

Why do I think that an over glorified pair of shoes can cause so much destruction? I believe it would have to do with brand names and fads. However, the main reason I think that situations like this come into existence is the incredibly low amount of intelligence people as a group can have when coming together for such a purpose as to buy the new fancy shoes.

People these days are obsessed with having the next and great item. People think that the outer appearance and material things are what are most important. They think that these materials help to display their "status". I however think that they are wrong. What's on the inside and how we treat others is more important than material.

  51. I would never wake up early, wait in line for hours, or risk my life for a pair of shoes. I don’t understand how a pair of ugly shoes can cause such a ruckus. What would happen if people put this much effort and passion into something of more substance, for instance, feeding the poor among others. After reading this story it really puts into perspective just how poorly some Americans rank their priorities. It is very foolish and irresponsible for a parent to abandon their children while they wait in line for stupid shoes. On the other hand it is entertaining and it makes me feel better about myself to know that I have my priorities in order.

I agree with you on how people are so fixated on creating some sort of status through materialistic objects. Whether it is the newest pair of shoes, next generation cell phone, and new style of clothing, you name it what matters the most is what is on the inside. Individual personality and originality are what is most sought after and hiding behind cool stuff will only influence bandwagon mentality.

In my life experiences,I've seen people go to great lengths just to get the material culture they desire. From people camping out for good deals or fighting over who saw the article of clothing first, people will go out of their way to get the jump on material culture. I believe many probably see having things like these shoes are their master status and cannot live without it.

I think that people put entirely too much effort into fitting in and having the sought after material things. To care about a pair of shoes more than your children's safety is not only ridiculous, but sad. On top of that are the people that doing this are setting the example for their children or their peers. My opinion is that people just put too much stock into possessions and not enough on the parts of their lives that really matter.

  60. It's not the shoes themselves, it's the status the shoes represent that people are after. This same kind of thing happens when a new gaming console comes out, or when apple releases a new phone. People feel they have to be the first to own these items because it gives them a sense of superiority. It gives them a reason to say "look at me! I'm special because I have something people want and you don't!" I think most of this is media driven, clever advertisement and marketing make people thing that these things will give them a more prominent status.

I think it's one of those things where it shoes your status or your class. Its like a way of lettting people know you have a lot of money. I remember my mom and step father waiting early in the morning to get a pair of shoes. I can also remember my step father almost getting them stolen from him. I can't really say why shoes cause an uproar because I've never really been into shopping, especially for shoes.

In my opinion I think that it is absolutely ridiculous for people to act that way over material items. Some other times that it has happened in history are over gold, food, and scarce resources. But what I don't understand is how something like shoes which are made of fabric and plastic can have that effect on people and hold such value. For some it is a status symbol but I think if it can make people hold it to such a high standard that is why it causes chaos.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Jennifer O. 46
People clearly overreacted to these shoes because they are a status symbol and highly desired by those wanting to use them to 'brag' and show off what they have. It's an example of how material culture is so dominant in the U.S. over nonmaterial culture, and typically causes more chaos as a result. If people are willing to act in a deviant manner to get material objects, that is mostly their fault and problem. Pop culture does overemphasize the importance of the 'newest' and 'best' of everything, especially with clothing/shoes. It is no wonder that people can be manipulated by the media to really desire these materials, but I do not blame the media alone. We do not see everyone that is exposed to this media screaming and rushing for these Air Jordans. It is not wrong, in my opinion, to want the best sometimes, but to put others and yourself at risk to get these material objects is going way too far. Shoes, personally, are not worth the $180 and related prices. Shoe shopping as a whole frustrates me enough as is. I think that a good, well-fitting, comfy $20 pair is a reward and I am never disappointed in not settling on some new fad shoe that will make me broke, and uncomfortable.

The latest and greatest is what everyone in the pop culture is about nowadays. There's nothing wrong wanting the best for you or for others but to get arrested or getting injured from this is not worth it. In my opinion I believe that the only reason for the chaos over these shoes is because they are a popular brand. If there were a pair of these exact shoes but without the Jordan logo and name on them there would not be a huge fight over them. I like to think of this individuals as 'Jordan fanatics'. Its actually pathetic to see what some peoples values have come to. Fighting and squabbling over a pair of shoes, that will probably wear out in a year or so, not to mention the obvious; over priced shoes. The point is our society has lost perspecitve of what is to be held at worth and what is to be left behind. American society thrives off closed minded people who value material aspect more than their own life not realizing that when they die, the material is left behind. These pair of shoes enables this individulas some sort of status and satisfaction; the status being that they are cool and in accordance with current trends and satisfaction that they are able to fit in with the rest of the close minded cool people. The store should come up with a better way to sell these products, more speicifically such products that elicit such behaviors should only be restricted for purchasing online.

The entire time, I knew that I could wait another day and avoid the lines. But what would be the point of that? So I can understand where these shoppers are coming from when they got in these lines. The only reason I didn't see gunshots or fights at Twilight, was because I was in line with a bunch of preteens and middle aged women. Air Jordans are very popular basket ball shoes, and are viewed as a status symbol by certain subcultures. People often want to be the first to have something. This is seen with the latest iphones, video games, and movie premiers, and similar riots have occurred with these types of events. Certain subcultures prioritize material possessions and their appearance. Some people only wear brand name clothes, buy the newest items, or want any product that is endorsed by their favorite celebrities. Society also influences our purchases because people want to be similar to others in their subculture. People want what others have and worry about what others think about them. All of these reasons are why a pair of Air Jordan shoes can cause so much chaos.

  90. I believe it's a combination of media coverage of athletes, lyrics in hip hop songs, and competition that makes people go crazy for these shoes. It is all about who got them first so they can have bragging rights. My facebook news feed gets overrun with pictures and updates about these shoes every time a new version is released. I had a conversation with a coworker a few months ago who came in exhausted with bags under his eyes. Turns out he had not slept for close to 48 hours, because he drove to Montgomery after work one night to stand in line for almost 24 hours, because some store out there was releasing them a couple hours sooner and was supposed to have a few more in stock than stores in Georgia. When I asked him why he would put himself through such hell for a pair of shoes, he simply said "It's not just SOME shoes, you just don't get it" I said, "You're absolutely correct! I don't get it, but I'm trying to understand." He just simply kept saying "You wouldn't get it." Even a person who is completely caught up in that strange obsession could not explain it to me. Sneaker fans are people who collect coveted basketball or regular shoes and usually have a large collection. They are more common than you'd think. Ms. Williams stated that she would never again participate in this kind of purchase frenzy, yet she got 2 pairs of the Air Jordans! The violence and animalistic behavior shown by these shoppers proves that their wants and desire for attention came about due to the lack of discipline and respect they were taught growing up.
