Soc Fest II

Greetings! Namaste! Chao! Saludos! Merhaba! Howdy!

What did you find most interesting about Soc Fest? Was it the display or story of a classmate, or was it information you discovered about yourself and your culture as you worked on the project?

I had a blast at social fest! There were alot of really neat displays! I found it extreamly funny about how many people brought sweet tea. It made me feel right at home lol. The food was absolutly amazing. I really enjoyed meeting everyone from our classes.

  2. That was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed very much meeting everyone that I did meet. I was intrigued by the different cultures that were presented. I thought the soft drinks aka (soda pop) from Michigan were good( never had anything like it), I found the clans of Ireland and their surnames to be of great interest as well. The fried, chicken, corn bread and fried okra hit the spot, I didn't have to eat when I got home. The Swedish pasteries were very delicious too. My hat goes off to the young lady singing her ballad. The accopella style was very beautiful. There was a lot of of us there with southern roots so I did feel more comfortable in a unknown enviroment.

  3. I was amazed when I walked in. I really had no idea what to expect, however I was surprised of all the uniqueness our classes shared.

I wasn't even sure if I was doing the assignment right or not. I rarely share anything culturally related about myself with anyone outside of my family; this was really all new territory for me. All-in-all, I really enjoyed meeting my class mates, teacher and getting a chance to be on campus. Everyone that I met had such an interesting story to tell. I enjoyed every bit of it.

I enjoyed looking at the displays of people who were from different countries the most. They were so different from my life experience. I especially find it interesting when someone has writings in a different language. (Not sure why this is.....I guess I am just amazed because I only know one language).

I was thinking about bringing sweet tea also. Glad I changed my mind.....although I don't think my field peas were very popular with most people.

I was truly amazed by each person’s creativity. This was also an example of one’s culture. The way we think or over think things and that we are going to display our culture wrong. It was great getting to meet a lot of class mates you blog with. Lindsey B and Bobby W not to mention Kevin O oh how I want to be Irish. The display on the Native American Cherokee was the most interesting to me. I loved the coyote and all the symbolism of the Native American Culture. It is also like stepping back in time looking at the pictures and stories of years gone by. If time travel is ever possible I would like to be a volunteer. After all I have seen a UFO! I was glad to know that I am not the only one adding to their career. I am adding business to a medical career and others are adding medical to a Business career.

I believe there is a State law that all restaurants have to serve sweet tea. Also on Steele Magnolias it’s the house wine of the South.

I thought that the Soc Fest was such a wonderful event. I had the opportunity to be exposed to several cultures under one roof, all in one day. The event really made me understand not only more about my culture but other cultures and how they may have been similar or different. I felt like I had traveled the world , for which I was so caught up in learning the customs of several countries. This was a lifetime experience that really made me feel like I had gained knowledge and a better understanding of the world and how everyone is different in their own unique way. All of this history under one roof and I didnt even have spend thousands of dollars to travel, I thought to myself. I will never forget this wonderful experience and the opportunity for which I had a grand time. Watching everyone ask questions and taste food really made me feel like I was a part of something special. The word that probally descibes this event was something of a "Mini Museam" event. I thank everyone for allowing me to experience such a historic event.

I would have to agree with you on your comment. The sweet tea, that we drink each and everyday is definitely something that I can say its a part of our culture. I never knew that sweet tea was such a special drink within many families. I also enjoyed meeting everyone at the event. I am normally shy but this event made me want to ask questions and get a better understanding of the roots of each custom. What a wonderful time I had.

I thought the whole experience was great! I discovered more about my own background, getting to know my classmates background and eating the food! I think most people were afraid to eat the food because I saw a lot of it getting thrown away, or being taken back home. For me, I was a bit uncomfortable with the food not being covered up. Individual servings should be covered to prevent stuff from falling in the food, especially during transport. I did however enjoy the banana pudding, southern cavier, fruit salad and Swedish candy.

I enjoyed the performances and Aqeelah's display a lot. Performing is hard; I mean putting yourself out there like that is really straining. And I thought SarahDawn sounded like one of the Disney Princess singers. Also Aqeelah's display was very interesting to me because I love understanding cultures in terms religious faith. It's difficult to ask someone, "Hey...what's your religion like?" Although I didn't get to stay long, I found it very interesting. On the other hand, I did get to find out some really funny and cool stories about my own family while putting together my photo album. the whole thing was fun.

The concept of Soc Fest was great, a process of putting the Sociology into practice. I applaud who ever brought the idea up because it gave me the avenue to know about the culture of each and every members of the class. It’s so nice knowing my Prof. although we did not interact personally but it was good to see him and know who has been giving me all the excellent remarks in my thinking critical assignments.

I had a blast at the Soc Fest. The overall experience was great. To meet the instuctor, and then basically to visit different parts of the world. It was interesting to see some of the same things share from different races, but had the same beliefs. Overall, the social fes was a great experience and I'm glad I got to be a part of it. What's funny is that sweet tea was one of the things that I had made as part of my project. It definitely should be dubbed the "drink of the South" - I recently traveled across the country and really missed my sweet tea...once you get out of the south, if you ask for sweet tea, most people will bring you a glass of iced tea and a container of sweetners (definitely not like the real thing)!! :)

How could you have been "underwhelmed"?? Perhaps we attended two different Sociology Fests, because from what I saw, almost everyone put a lot of time and effort into their presentations and food. How could you be underwhelmed, when there was a stuffed coyote on display, a prayer blanket with a compass, a Koran, an entire Mexican feast and live music........just to give a few examples!!! It takes quite a bit of time and effort to put together a display board, prepare the food to bring and collect the items for display. Asian,Americans,Latin Americans,African,Caribbean and middle eastern people were at the event .Having a feeling of being present at an international summit was very awesome. Seeing all the displays and interactions with lecturers was a great experience.

  82. I was so surprised and delighted to meet some fellow classmates and enjoyed seeing what everyone put together. At my age (haha) I was surprised that I learned new things about certain regions of my own country (USA).

I was also pleasantly impressed with the family heirlooms on display. I wish we had some in my family. Perhaps that will motivate me to keep some things around.

Researching family history is very rewarding, I've found out so many weird, cool stories about my family this way. Be sure to take advantage of the Georgia Room at the Cobb County Central Library. You have free access to Ancestry.com, census data, newspaper records, thousands of books and family histories and records from across the South and the U.S. and a great staff to get you started.

Although, I was not present for the Soc Fest due to a major conflict of time with my Biology class in which my professor was notified of. I personally spoke with some of my fellow’s classmates; I was told that, the fest was a big success. The interactions between teacher, students and staff were also indisputable among of everyone. I was very pleased to hear all those good stuffs about the fest.

I was amazed at the outcome of the event, I had no idea of the scale of the sociology fest until I first walked through the doors that evening. I saw many great displays and representations of everyone's different culture. I do have to say I walked around the 200 building a few times before I found the room the test was in!

No need to be so negative. Alot of the displays I saw had alot of culture represented. These weren't meant to be displayed at a shareholder meeting in order to increase their yearly budget, it was merely a fun project/event to par-take in.

I didn't think that there would be so much diversity. I liked learning about other's costums and of course I also loved getting to try all the food!

What I found interesting was pretty much the whole thing. It was so nice to see the pride and passion many felt for their cultures and lifestyles. By doing this project it made me think outside the box to come up with something that kind of defines who I am or really where I came from.

What I enjoyed most about Soc fest was meeting and conversing with fellow online classmates. I also enjoyed viewing all the different cultures, I learned alot that evening. Stephen's cornbread and background about Tennessee really inspired me to visit the 3 start state. This project was a great idea.

I enjoyed meeting some of the online students. After reading so many blog comments it was nice to finally get to know a little about them. I also really enjoyed the cultural melting-pot it was. Such a wide variety of individuals with great things to share. It was fun.

  99. My favorite part of Soc Fest was meeting (I think her name was Megan) and her sister. My fiance is also lebanese and I was never introduced to the culture until I met him. I really love traditional lebanese food and it was so cool to meet someone else who was lebanese! Their homemade baklawa was DELICIOUS!

The most interesting thing at the soc fest was the stories behind the food that people brought. ex, someone showed me a black and white portrait of their grandfather and somehow related the portrait to the dish he brought.
