What did you find most interesting about Soc Fest? Was it the display or story of a classmate, or was it information you discovered about yourself and your heritage as you worked on the project?

ReplyDeleteI personally found the Soc Fest interesting because of the things that i found out about other classmates that i had no idea about before! There were a few classmates that i had already figured out from the beginning, but others i did not know at all! In the end i did learn a little more about myself than i knew before, but pretty much the same all around. I loved the experience and the project was an easy grade for the class too!

ReplyDeleteThe most interesting aspects of the fest were the numerous displays from the different cultures. I was most intrigued by the bacon wrapped deer and the african walking stick that holds drinks. I think it was an awesome experience and it taught me a lot about others.

I agree with Lenie about the bacon wrapped deer meat. It looked and tasted very nice. The display that hit me on a more personal note was Cindy T. The homeade quilt brought me back to my own childhood that somehow escaped me. It brought back a simple time that made my childhood a wonderful family experience.

ReplyDeleteI was thrilled to see that for once, I was not the oldest person in class! I was also very interested of the people who kept it very simple. The guy with the computer tower, and the McDonalds bag comes to mind foremost. I really liked his display because this is truely the generation that is up and coming in our world today. That project took big ones, but he totally pulled it off! Kudos.

ReplyDeleteThe Soc Fest was so exciting to me because I was able to correspond with other classmates that are either in class or online. I learned alot about the different cultures and never realized just how diverse this class is. The food was fabulous and the entertainment was classic. I wish I would have put more effort in to my booth now. Everyone did great and I was very happy to be a part of it!

I found the different countries and families lifestyles were very interesting.It was very exciting to see the different ways different countries do their celebrations. Most of the different foods cooked different ways to represent their countries. I really learned a lot from the Soc Fest and it was nice to see so many different ways that people celebrate their lifestyles. This was very education and a happy learning experience. It was nice to put names and faces together. I think this was really successfully GREAT!

ReplyDeleteThe Soc Fest was an awsome learning experiance for me because i never knew i diverse Chattahoochee Tech was until the other night. Also it was an easy A in the class.
I found Soc. fest to be a very interesting experience. The envirnoment was more enjoyable than I expected. I walked around and visited the tables for over an hour and a half. I learned many things about cultures other than mine.

ReplyDeleteI found it very cool learning about all the different cultures, i always enjoyed learning that stuff in the past. I loved all the food, especially the smoked venicin, and the haiti food
Soc Fest was amazingly interesting. So many different cultures. I especially enjoyed learning about the Ivory Coast from Lula. She said that when they retire that they must come back to the village for a celebration no matter where in the world they are. Is this correct, Lula? Was it turning 50 or retirement that the celebration was for? Anyway, another very interesting fact was that the elders in their village were appointed to making the laws once they were too old to work. I thought that was so cool how they use the wisdom of their elders for the good of the village.
ReplyDeleteThe displays were my favorite part about the fest, although I really enjoyed the banana pudding I had. Delicious!
I really enjoyed Brett's photography exhibit - it was really interesting to see him work. I was also so pleased to have had several wonderful people that came to speak with me about my big, gay happy family. I expected to have some haters come by but I only got love and support so it was really nice to feel accepted for who I am.

I thought the idea of having a sociology festival and being able to see all different types of cultures and subcultures of people was an excellent idea. I also liked the way people brought different food from their cultures for others to try. The display about Nigeria was very interesting to me. I like the clothing and the head wraps the women wore. Also the way that certain things the include in their way of dress had meanings and reasons why they wore it.

ReplyDeleteSurprisingly, I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the Social Fest. It was interesting placing a face to some of the names I've read on here. It was also fascinating reviewing everyone's presentations. As soon as I walked in, I was hit with all the different set-ups. My eyes didn't know where to look first. I liked sharing and discovering things about different lifestyles, cultures, and customs. Everyone was pleasant for the most part and there seem to be a nice vibe in the air. All in all I feel fortunate to have experienced and been apart of such an event.

ReplyDeleteYes, there were a lot of elaborate, savory dishes. I liked that there was a variety. There were some dishes I had never eaten but ended up liking them. Everything smelled, looked, and tasted delicious.

I enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone of food and trying new things- also loved the venison bacon wraps! I also loved telling about my own life and I like reminiscing about my past and thinking of great childhood memories!

I honestly didn't expect for it to be as big as it ended up being, I really enjoyed sharing a little about myself with others. The thing I like the most about soc. fest was how diverse our campus really is, I had an idea before but the fest shined a little light on the subject.

I never really cared to look into my culture and actually found out a lot of things I did not know before. Like why people in my family all looked so different. I enjoyed the diverse foods as well!

ReplyDeleteThe most interesting thing about Soc Fest was to learn about different cultures, specially Africa, how rich and diverse that continent is, I enjoyed all the food and all the displays were very interesting you can see the effort that most of us put on this project.We need to explore and understand each other. if we all see and do the same thing this will be a very boring world.It si so important to tell people about our culture because there are so many misconceptions about races and nationalities. It was fun and very complex and it adds a lot of diversity.

ReplyDeleteIn response to Blake Huffman, not only Chattahoochee is a diverse place; United States is a diverse country. The problem is that we do not have access to any Soc Fest at national level which would be very important that way we can build tolerance and understanding to the different cultures we have in our community. We need to embrace our diversity.

ReplyDeleteI had a great time at SOC fest. I didn't know what to expect but the vibe all night was really laid back and casual. I enjoyed all the lovely African ladies roaming around with their lovely headwear. The different foods were oustanding, where else can you sample some KILLER tiramisu, some bacon wrapped venison and then a colombian empanada all in one setting. Kudos to the woman who got up and gave us a sample of some clogging to "Rocky Top". All in all it was a very informative and enjoyable evening, even though the mid-term was`alot harder than I expected. I thought everyone did a great job and this old Irishman had a great time. Slainte!!!

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed myself that day.it was a great show and the event showcased our various cultural heritage,the similarities, and diverse culture.Especially the similarities between the Nigerian culture and kenya,Gambia cultures.I also learnt a lot about other cultures and most especially the food,it was awesome.But the most thrilling was meeting all the online students, and making friends.That was a great show!

ReplyDeleteI thought the "SocFest" was a great experience and it forced me to step out of my compfort zone.(Good thing)For starters it forced me to strike up conversations with complete strangers and more importantly it exposed me to other cultures. I thought it was a lot of fun and I would do it again. I think it would be awesome to go to something like we did, but on a much larger scale. For example, close off the streets at Midtown and have thousands of people participate. Experience the smell of food, music and performances from all of the different cultures that reside right here in Metro Atlanta.

I agree Michelle..if I had it to do all over again I would have put more creativity into my display, but I found it difficult to really find items that represent me as being distinctive from other cultures. My roots are German and Irish, but I haven't really held onto any of those countries traditions. I'm pretty much the baseball, hotdog, and Chevrolet kind of guy.

rgonzalez- I had a really good time, it was interesting to see how many people made the effort to introduce us to there culture. I was asked questions that I would have never expected, but I guess that was the purpose of the Soc Fest. Awesome job everyone.
ReplyDeleteThere was a lot of different cultural things brought to the soc fest that I found to be very interesting. It was neat looking at each unique thing that people brought in. Some of the clothing that I saw is something you don't see very often worn around here. There was one project where they cooked bugs and ate, which is something I would think is gross in my culture, but it very common in everyday meals to them. Some people even made there own clothing, shoes, and jewelery and they were very detailed and different than what I'm used to seeing. As for what I brought in to represent my culture, I found it shocking to know that many people don't know that deers shed their antlers. This just goes to show you how somethings that you know from your everyday life can be so different than others perspectives. Also they don't fully understand everything that it is you know that you would assume they would have knowledge of.

ReplyDeleteThe Soc Fest was a great idea. I especially enjoyed see classmates that I only corespond with online. I saw many interesting projects and exploring diverse cultures was very interesting. The Soc Fest allowed me to explore my family history a little more than usual. After the Soc Fest I went to Swainsboro, GA to see where my grandmother was born and raised. I met family that I never knew. It was a pleasure.

ReplyDeleteThe clothing was very unique and the food was good to. Some of the food I counld not try because of the sugar but for what I did try I liked it. I would highly reccomend doing this again. It was fun.
I have never done research on my culture before so I was suprised of all the things that I found out. It made me ask questions I have never asked before to my family and it helped me see the culture in a new way

ReplyDeleteThere were two things that I found to be fun and fasinating about the Soc. Fest. The first was all the information that I gathered about my heritage and culture that I was unaware of! I had a blast digging a little deeper and seeing where my real roots were planted! My second favorite thing was actually getting to meet some of my classmates in a face to face enviroment. We get to chat and read each others blogs on here and it was nice to put a face with a name!

I think this is a great idea and would love to see it take hold as something that sociology continues to offer for up coming classes!
I loved getting to hear other people share their stories with me! I brought my stuff for my 3-day walk, and I have several people come tell me their experience with breast cancer, whether it was was their mother, grandmother, or themselves. It was really encouraging to hear other people say they've been through what I've been through, it just made me feel like I wasn't alone.

ReplyDeleteI found the soc fest very informative. the most interesting thing to me though was that alot of our different cultures were quit similar. Mostly in music. I was introduced to some cultures that shared classical music with me as well as poetry. Also it not only described culture but it described personality, because most cultures have stereotypes, but each person has their own personality in their culture.

I agree with you. I have also learned alot about myself. It was one person in particular that made me realize something unique about my culture that i never realized. I guess when you around it so much, you never know how unique it really is.
The cultural fest was a great learning experience, especially for me to get out of my comfort zone, and learn about other cultures as well. Cultural diversities help us to accept, help us to share our views without quarrels, and most of all, help us to built tolerance for human kind regardless of our social, ethnicity, race, religious, lastly sexual orientation. Although we all came from different part of the world, we all have different cultural background, but we have one big thing in common which is, we are belong to only one kingdom of the society humam being.

The entire concept of the Soc Fest was very appealing to me, I thought it was not only a great way to keep in touch with your family's history, but a different way to meet your classmates.

ReplyDeleteThe sociology fest itself was a very interesting way to teach each of us not only about our own cultures but also about others cultures. The most interesting part of the sociology fest however was how everyone interpreted what the best way to display their culture would be, seeing the poster boards, the slide shows and people bringing in food and different materials to represent their culture. I really enjoyed being a part of it and took a lot from it.

I think that we all need to be taken out of our comfort zone from to time to time to help us grow and understand those around us and help us to become better people and maybe even learn not to judge others.
Deidre C. Online- I was very nervous about having to participate in the "Fest". I wasn't sure what I wanted to bring and how much was too much or not enough. I wanted to see the other display's from countries that I have never been to and just find out a little more about those cultures. I found that there was so much diversity in the room. I loved it! I had already researched my genealogy and really didn't share that part in this assignment very well. I could have shared some Scottish or Irish stuff but my family doesn't actively engage with those cultures. We are just southern folk and so the album and stories and the cake and clogging I believe was enough.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment! I was scared to death to be up there by myself clogging for the group. It was a little harder to do on carpet. I was worried that one of the taps/tacks would get hung in the loops of the carpet.
It is a great cardio workout! Clogging can be done to many different genre of music. I chose the "norm" for the Fest. Our group will be clogging at the Big Shanty this Spring.

ReplyDeleteI had a really good time at the fest,it was very in formative. I enjoyed walking around and talking with my fellow classmates. To whom I can now put a face to some of the blog responses. Having the Fest was a terrific idea, and I feel it should be an eventthat takes place every semester. The Fest allowed me to espress my social cultural and learn of my classmates social cultural as well.
It was very interesting to see so many different culturals that are on our school campus on a daily basic.

ReplyDeleteThis was a great way to meet our classmates. It was fun to compare my personal visual images of my classmates to the actual people. The images we see of many countries is based on a portrayal from TV media. It was great to see positive aspects from every culture and their traditions. I am all about travel and would love to go to West and/or South Africa. I was also interested in the Brazil exibit. It was facinating to see the region broken down in indigenous groups of people and the cultural mix in their modern cities. This was an excellent way to present the purpose of sociology. It was almost like attending an open air, multi-cultural, market.

I expected there to be mostly one type of culture but I saw many different types. I think its awesome that even at one college in an area, had such a wide variety. It has made me realize just how diverse America really is.

When we learn about many cultures it opens our eyes to the world around us and can also help us understand ourselves better.

ReplyDeleteI must say that when I first heard that we would have to do this (and I'm sure like many of the students had thought) I was dreading it a bit. I knew that on this day I was going to have to spend 10 hours straight at school and I had two other midterms to do! I was really tired, yet I had SO much fun at this fest. I too was a little nervous about coming, but it was very relaxed and fun. You often wonder who the other people in your online courses are and it was great meeting everyone. I especially liked talking to the woman who wrote articles for LGBT in magazines and newspapers because most of my siblings were gay and we got to talk about a lot of interesting things. She was a great woman. I liked that the soc fest included culture from old and new ancestry- like those who were proud of their American roots and those who branched into their European, African,and other roots as well. I really enjoyed this fest and I am so glad we got a chance to do it. It let me go out of my way to do things that I had previously wanted to do as far as my heritage but never had the time (I finally had a reason to go get my irn bru and try it for the first time!) Overall it was great meeting everyone and learning about who you were and to be proud and embrace where we came from, different but equal. I wouldn't mind going to more of them on my own time, even.
getting to see the faces from the blog was great. Tasting food from all over the world was even better. My favorite thing however was getting to share the history of my grandparents. It game me a lots of pride and personal satisfaction to tell people about the pictures of my grandfather from the war and show people the note he received when he was in Germany from a local woman.

I didn't know we had such a great diverse group of people in this class. As far as this being an "easy" class assignment, I believe that can be subjective because it takes some time to get these items together and prepare your exhibit, etc. I did enjoy the opportunity to learn about the multiple cultures in this class!

Or maybe a stereotype or two was dispelled as we all gained clarity on the different societies on display. ReplyDeleteSociology Fest. was a fun experience to see cultures from all over the world. The combination of great charismatic presenters to their displays made the entire festival an amazing explosion of enjoyable information to soak in. Some of the lengths people went to shows the great effort and love for their culture; that was one of my favorite things about the whole experience.

I couldn't agree more with you. I live quite a busy life, and Sociology Fest. fell within the same week of my store closing in Hiram; so among the stress of transferring to a new place, losing a family and complete familiarity, and then a mid term with a project all in one night cause quite a bit of stress. Needless to say, I pulled through it and enjoyed the night.

I think that's one of the greatest things about Sociology Fest.--everyone is diverse and many students hail from all over. Not only did we get to see great displays, but we also got the opportunity to taste new foods from all over the world. I just may have to come to the next Festival just to do that again!
The Soc fest was a amazing avent. I learned alot about other people and there culture and there heritage and i also learned alot about myself. I love how i was able to go around and taste and read about other people and the different things in there life and how i was able to tell people about me nad my life and where i have come form. That is definitely something i would love to do again for another class or even just to get to know people.
ReplyDeletei was so reluctant preparing for the soc fest at first but it later turned out to be a great experience and i look forward to another one again.i basicly tasted all the food from different culture and i made sure i visited each table to experience how the world is been diversified.the rice cake actually struke my mind because i never kneww that you could bake with rice.

ReplyDeleteI did not get to attend the Soc fes, but from looking at the pictures it looked to be very interesting. I would have loved to see the presentation of the person with the Ireland display and Southern Appliachian Culture Display. I wish I could have attended.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoy the Soc. Fest. I had the opportunity to learn more about United States. Peoples believes and way of leaving. In past experiences, usually “we” bring something from our cultural, ethnical, culinary and traditional lives to be exhibited however, Soc Fest was different; to me it was a total mix of ordinary global citizens showing to each other a little about them and their country. I learned a lot about America – or better to say; I learned a lot about Georgians and things that are important to them such as the photographer, the marine, the American family, the collector, the food and much more. The Soc. Fest was a good experience.

ReplyDeleteI found it very interesting to see all of the different cultures that are in Woodstock. Some of the displays were very entertaining and I loved that I learned a lot about different culture around the world. I like how some of the people had stories about how they grew up with things that sound so different to my own culture. I have always found German a very interesting culture and I loved to learn new things about Germany. I even discovered a little more about myself as well.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the tap dancing. It was very brave and coordinated...something I am not. I was happily surprised at all the interesting food choices, unfortunately I took advantage of the Mick-D's chicken nuggets. Thanks, Guy. I loved the atmosphere...the table set-ups, chairs, and stage. Things were nicely put together. I also just LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the pup! Oh yeah, he was with me, but, hey, what a Dingo he is! Thanks everyone for not scorning me for bringing him. He had a great time!

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the Soc Fest. It was nice to meet new people and to learn about others cultures. I enjoyed learning about Mexico and talking to Mr. LaPorte. I also learned a lot about my religion while I was preparing for for the fest.
