Virtually Sharing Food

One of the many social media trends is to post a photo a meal or food item. The June 5th edition of the USA Today reports, “Food is the new cool.”

If you do this, please give an example of what you posted and why.

If you have NEVER uploaded an image of food to Twitter, Facebook, Instragram, Tumblr, Google+ , etc, please SPECULATE on why you think it is millions of people share pictures of food with the online world?

I have taken pictures of food that I think it photograph worthy, but I have never posted any of them, that I can remember. I have a beautiful picture of cupcakes my mother got me for my birthday this year. The cupcake is vanilla and with white frosting and white, pearl decorations scattered along the frosting. There are also other cupcakes in the picture, but the white one stood out the most to me. It was called Wedding Cake, and it was delicious. I don't think I post pictures of food, because I don't want people seeing what I am eating. It just seems like a weird thing to me. People that I have seen posting pictures of their food are trying to say "Hey, look at me. Look what I am eating and you cannot have a single bite, I will torture your taste buds though."

I have taken pictures of food but not posted them. I took a picture of a pancake i made to look like a heart and sent it to me husband. A lot of times when I see food posted on Facebook, its quick and easy meals or fun receipes that you can make. And then sometimes its new diet foods. I had a friend post a picture of her breakfast this morning and it was captioned as "Start of 21 day challange diet."

I once uploaded an image of food on Google when i wrote a project on culture to show the types of food we have in African and the important ones to prepare for any occasion. There was a day i took a picture of my favorite food Dodo(Plantain)gizzard and stew but never posted it.
I believe some people share pictures of food online to show the type of delicacy they eat since we have different culture with different food.

I post pictures of food on my social media accounts all the time. I love to cook and like to think i'm good at it so when I make something that I believe is aesthetically pleasing, I will post a picture of it to show my family and friends. Often times I will get specific requests from family members to, "bring those cupcakes you posted last month to granny's birthday party." There are countless pictures of my meals on Instagram. Food is my all time favorite hobby next to music, so as you can imagine, my social media sites are filled with yummy recipes and guitars.

  5. I collect food pictures on Pinterest because I love food and creating new foods all the time. It is simply a place to store the wonderful pictures and recipes I see others posting. I categorize them by topics of interest such as breakfast ideas, summer meals, healthy meals, entertaining/party meals, etc. The pictures are amazing and I love having the visual library for a reference. In general just discussing foods with my peers isn't something that interest me, I'm more about creating , when in the mood to create. I suppose being a visual person, the pictures are much more appealing than reading a cookbook.

I have never taken a picture to post on any of the web sites. I know that when I am hungry and I am at a place where I really enjoy the food I do think that it looks appetizing. I guess am not sure what the reason is for posting food unless it maybe is to make others jealous and wish they were there. If I had talent in making food look appetizing I would probably take a picture of it and post it to show others my talent.

  7. I like to gather types of foods from different cultures but i have never thought of posting it on websites though i feel it might be important because it might give other people exposure to alot of foods in the worlds. I guess i like my culture most because that is what i have grown eating and i would encourage we start posting foods so that we can make a difference to the world.

  8. I have taken a few snapshots of my scrumptious meals before. I lived in Hawaii for a little over 3 years, so taking photos to post on social media was exciting to others. Plus, it made others a little jealous of the fun that I was having. While, deployed we would take pictures of us and the locals gathering for a supper or breakfast. Usually the photo would be posted to our "Good News" reports that we would publish to families. I have traveled the world a few times and have tasted multiple varieties of food and about 90% have made it to the computer screen.

    1. That is a very cool way to try out different cultures and the foods represented by each country. I typically do not post food, but love watching food presented like I stated before on Pinterest, and a few family members post it on Fb and so forth. I would loved to have been in your suitcase sampling foods around the world.

After reading the topic it makes me feel ridiculous for posting pictures of food, but I have to admit I have done it a few times. I only put food type pictures on Instagram because I feel like that is exactly what it is for, showing people what you are doing in your life via pictures. I wouldn't post regular everyday meals on there just things that are fun, new or important. I went and looked through my Instagram to see what food pictures I had posted and there is a picture of this cucumber salad I always use to make for one of my best friends in college. She had me make it every time we were together. When I posted this picture I had been living in Atlanta for a couple of years and hadn't seen that particular friend in years. It always reminds me of her, so after I made it I took a picture and tagged her so we could both reminisce.

  10. To be honest...I don't know why people post their food on social websites, maybe because people want the world to see watch you are eating at whatever restaurant their eating at.

Some people post pictures of the food they eat because it is just the in thing to do now. Some people post pictures of food because they are traveling and want to show others the new experience they are taking part in. Those people that just HAVE to take pictures of what they eat on a regular basis are just ridiculous. Honestly, nobody cares that you went to Wendy's. The coffee you are drinking doesn't interest anyone. I believe you should do what makes you happy. Having said that, you should also not get your feelings hurt when people don't instantly like and comment on the Ham Sandwich you just had to share with everyone.

  12. I enjoy posting strange meals! I am given the opportunity to try many different cultural foods.
This past Father's Day, I brought Mr.David Clark to Hacienda Vieja in Woodstock, GA.
We ate a Pineapple stuffed with sea food, rice, cheese, onions, etc.
It was honestly one of the best meals I have encountered.
I share this with my friends on Instagram and Facebook so that maybe they will try it some day.
Hacienda Vieja just opened near Taco Mac on Hwy 92. Please give it a try, I highly recommend it.

  13. I have never posted pictures of my meals. I believe people post their food because it is the popular thing to do in social media, it is actually a bit silly to me. The only way I could see this as being acceptable is if you are sharing a recipe with someone.

I do not have an account on any social media websites, but I do understand why people post pictures of food. The image of a good dish can evoke many emotions, and at the same time tantalize the senses. If it is true that we first taste food with our eyes, then today’s food, plate posters are right on time. When I see a picture of a delicious meal I begin to salivate, and if I am not partaking in a meal that compares to the picture I may become quite jealous. Perhaps posting pictures of delightful edibles is just a playful way to stir up envy. At any rate, as long as there are beautiful dishes to observe, there will be people lining up to post pictures of them.

  15. I have posted a few pictures of the food that was eating. The only reason I share pictures of food is because when I find food that is amazing, I want everyone to know about it so that they can go try it too. I have never been one of those people that post pictures of everything they eat. I only do it like once or twice a year.

  16. I have posted a couple pictures of my food that I was eating. One time I posted a picture of swordfish that I had that was served at an upscale restaurant in Disney World. Another time to just show people soup and recommend it. I do not post pictures to often because most of the time I start eating before I can even think to take a picture of it.

  18. Without a doubt I have done this. We all like to eat and when you have really good chow you want to share it with your friends tell them where and what you had. Its a good way to spread the word about good food. I think its cool.

I am guilty of posting pictures of meals I prepared on my own. I was proud of getting specific recipes accomplished for the very first time and it was awesome to receive praise and approval from my cyber friends. Im in love with food and it isn't just eating to me...It is an experience. I've posted pictures of dishes or beverages that "rocked my world" in hopes that my cyber friends would be encouraged to "experience" what I have. Free promotion, I suppose, Lol! Also, food is a universal entity can serve as a perfect tool to socialize. Every human on the planet has this item in common...Great way to relate to anyone from any walk of life.

I have never taken a picture of food and posted it via social network. I don't understand why people do it, I guess they want to show off their culinary skills, or make other people jealous of what they're eating. I really have no idea. I don't understand why people like to share every waking minute of their lives with one another.

    1. In response to Tyler R,
I dont know either however, i think some of them are very lonely, some likes to show off, some likes attention, so if people are watching why not. Personally i have never taken a picture of my food to put on social media. What ever happens to privacy? that word is becoming absolete.

  22. I have never taken a picture of foods to post but I enjoy seeing those who post on facebook. I like different cultures and I would wish to eat their food. I think that people post food on the internet because they want to show people the different foods. I think that people have fun when they are eating and then think of posting what they have eaten.

  23. jane k 67 in response to samantha 67 I feel it is ok to post pictures of food because some people get information on how other cultures are and again if you travel you are aware of what you might find.

I think I missed the food band wagon. I honestly don't know why people will post food...in my opinion, some just over share.I find it difficult to post picture of food.

I have posted pictures on Facebook of cool recipes I have made because I was excited about it. For example, one time I posted a picture of chicken pot pie muffins that I made. I think people do it because we are converting to a social media network society where people share their success, sorrows, skills, hobbies, and interests with like minded people all around the word. And like the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

    1. in speculation of why people share pictures of foods with the online world, is simply because of some sort of food interest. Weather they love food, make it themselves,or just simply fascinated by the styles and creativity of what they see. Either way i think its worth sharing.

  26. Although I have never personally uploaded an image of food to social media I could definitely see the appeal. Food is a great way to express your mood to people if a married man were to take his wife to McDonald's it would be no big thing. If that same man took her to that restaurant on their anniversary you could see how that would be saying something without speaking. So in everyone'd mind food is diffidently a way to express yourself.
