Tattoos and the Body as Material Culture

    I have 4 medium to large tattoos. The tattoo I will choose to describe as to why I got it in the first place, is the one in the center of my back. It is a woman with the Puerto Rican flag across her backside. I grew up in a household with my mom's second husband, who is a white man that grew up a military brat and spent his older years up north in Vermont. My first language was not English but it was Spanish. My step-dad thought it was rude and disrespectful to speak another language that he couldn't understand and would yell at us, or ignore us, if we didn't speak to him or everyone else in English. I am full blooded and the rest of my family is fluent in English and Spanish, except for me and my sister. My mother stopped speaking Spanish to us, and we were forced to act "American" inside and outside the house. Eventually, Spanish became a language of a distant past and I lost my original language from never speaking it. I felt ashamed of my roots and my culture until i was about 15 yrs old. I not only suffered severe scrutiny from other hispanics who were fluent, but also from my more distant family such as cousins and aunts and uncles. I was embarrassed and for many years wouldn't tell anyone I was Puerto Rican. When Georgia started becoming more diverse, I had to learn the concept of not caring what other people thought because it was racist and short sighted. Most of all, I started to learn how to love myself, and to love myself I had to love everything that makes me, me. I got the tattoo as a reminder to never ever forget where I came from and to love myself whether other people do or don't and if they want to be ashamed of who I really am, then they can get a good look at my backside as I walk out.

      That is a very inspiring story. I could not imagine being forced to ignore your heritage and culture. It must have been very difficult to form a proper identity, since our identity as a person is so tied our culture. I am glad that you were able to reconnect with your heritage, and it is inspiring that you now wear that tattoo with pride.

  2. I don't have a tattoo and don't think I will ever get one, but I believe that tattoo are an extension of who people are and its more common now then years ago simply because of our freedom to express ourselves. I don't see anything wrong with having them.

      J. Wright90 I agree with you. I don't have any tattoos as well. Number one, I am afraid of needles. Number two, I do not have any because of my core values and beliefs. Religion I think has a lot to do with whether or not someone decides to get a tattoo. Although, tattoos in the last 10-20 years inside the church have become more prevalent. Tattoos history however has a much darker past than the light that people make out of it today for cultural or materialistic reasons. Anything can be used for good or bad though. I think just like anything else, everyone has the right to choose what they want to do with their life. People have embraced tattooing their bodies as an art form and an expression of freedom. Regardless of any decision, tattoos or anything else in life, consequences will follow whether they are good or bad.

  3. Chelsea N.90 I personally do not have any tattoos. I think that the United States has adopted the idea of tattoos from other cultures around the world. Tattoos no more than 20 years back used to be considered to be taboo. The only people who had them were the out casts of society. These were the people that "decent" moral people didn't want to mess with because these people were considered to have no "morals". They were the rebels of our American Dream and ideal family picture. Now days so much more has become of this practice. It has become socially accepted in almost every culture. Especially in the church, more churches have adopted the idea that tattooing the body is harmless and they have abandoned any belief that the God they serve dislikes them. America was founded on Christianity or at least the thought of a moral decent society. I think that the farther we as a nation get from the idea of morality, boundaries and morals, the more freedom of ourselves and the right to do whatever we want becomes prominent because there is no one to hold the standard to. Every man is for himself and dictates what he does with his life without the judgment of God.

      I may be a little confused. Are you suggesting that those who have tattoos have fewer (or weaker) morals? If so, I wonder if you base this on the idea that "the body is a temple, keep it holy". And, again, if so, what constitutes keeping the body holy? The reason I ask is because I have relatives (on the wife's side) that have said that about tattoos, yet some drink, some smoke, some are over-weight. . . they apply that scripture selectively, as people often do.
      So again, just wondering if I read your post right or if I read too much into it.

      I think she is saying that when tattoos first appeared in America they were from the outcast people and labeled to have no morals. However, now they are more common and moral have changed.

      In no way can you tell me that the number of tattoos that I have dictates the morals that my parents taught me...that's absolutely absurd. I have 8 tattoos, none of which can be seen in my everyday clothing, yet I am a firm believer in Jesus Christ and know that one day soon I'll get to spend the rest of eternity next to my savior in heaven...even though I have a tattooed body.

    I have six tattoos. The first one I got is a star on my back and it is a replica of the Dallas Cowboys star in which my dad and I love this team so I represent them. I have a star tattoo on my left hand between my thumb and index finger that I got for my love of stars. I have Chinese symbols that stand for loss of a loved one on my right hand between my thumb and index finger to represent my cousin who passed away when I was in high-school and we had a handshake that we used our right hand so I put it there. I have a penguin on my left wrist because I love penguins. I have an in memory tattoo of a friend of mine who got killed by a drunk driver on my left foot which is Hello Kitty because we both love Hello Kitty. I have a cross on my right forearm with the breast cancer and ovarian cancer ribbons hanging off of it in memory of my aunt who passed away in January. The ribbons are for the types of cancer she had. Then underneath the cross is the Bible verse 2 Timothy 4:7-8 in which was a verse I found to represent her. She fought her battle and won. I love every single one of my tattoos. I think they are a beautiful way to express yourself. I will get many more tattoos.

      I think tattoos are a great way to express yourself. Just out of curiosity, how do you cover your exposed tattoos up? Most professional places don't want to see any out in the open. I wanted to get a tattoo but didn't because of that reason. Z

      I love all the meanings you have behind each of your tattoos. I think they only reason to get a tattoo is because it holds so much meaning to now, that when you get older you will still feel the same. There's nothing worse than regret, sometimes...

    3. J.Wright 90 reply to Cherish S 97. I agree in most if not all workplaces requires that no tattoos be exposed if you have all those tattoos how do you cover them? And also if when someone is getting all these tattoos are any thoughts given to the effect of employment in the long run, and also when you get older?

I am glad that you are not ashamed of your background and wear it proudly. I am sorry that you had to hide where you came from. I get judged a lot for my choices of tattoos but I love all of mine and show them off proudly. Props to you for standing up for your culture. :)

    I do not have a tattoo but I would like to get one. In todays society we get tattoos for many reasons they are symbols. Its an artistic way of displaying events or memories that had an impact on our lives.

    I have a medium sized tattoo on my right shoulder. It is a bird made out of musical notes and around the bird there is a quote from a poem Emily Dickinson that says, "Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul, and sings the tune without the words and never stops at all".
    This means a lot to me because the quote means that hope will always reside you and will never truly fades. The bird is made out of music notes symbolizes that music helps give that hope in myself and the bird represents the feather (Hope).

    Greetings. I do no't have any marks in my body. I respect everybody's choices.
    Sometimes I see other men with nice tattoos on their backs or arms and I feel like i want to get one too, but then I think about it and I don't want to be a bad example for my kids. One day I told my mother that i wanted to tattoo my kids name, one on each shoulder blade and she reply to me with this. Do you love your kids? And I said of course mother!!!! Then she asked me one more question. Will you love them more or less when you get the tattoo? I said, the same mother!!! last word from my mother was then you don't need ink in your skin to show your kids how much you love them. For that reason I never got one, but I do like them in some people. The problem with tattoos is that some people get carried away with the amount and designs and they end up looking trashy.
    Another problem is that most companies don't hire people when they have tattoos visible to others......Bottom line, I don't have one and never will.

    My values and morals wouldn't match with a tattoo. like I said I respect every one's decision but tattoos are not for me. I like to think ahead in life and most people end up regretting them later in life.

      Thinking ahead in life is a good idea. And while there certainly are people who regret getting a tattoo, there is something to be said about ending up later in life and regretting things that you did not do. A small tattoo on the upper arm or some other place that is easily covered can be that reminder later in life of an experience or event from your youth. Granted, it could be a painful reminder. Either way, when you get old you're gonna regret something, whether its something you did or something you failed to do.

    I don't have any tattoos, don't think I want any. Not to say tattoos are bad. Just the thought that when I mark my skin the ink is not coming off. Many people get tattoos on the body to display hurt, love, commitment, joy, to display a message. That's why I've always thought tattoos to be powerful and not a disgrace. Tattoos relate to sexuality in a way. You CANNOT judge someone for who or what they have been. Take the (Marsha Ambrosius Video Far Away) for example, now replace it with tattoos.

    I do not have a tattoo but I believe its been common place here in the United States as a way for folks to express themselves. People tattoo all kinds of things on their body from religious things to family related things to languages they do not speak. I personally go back and forth with wanting one and then not wanting one because I'm just not that sure that I want something so permanent on my body. But then again if you get something tattooed that is going to be a constant throughout your life then maybe it's not that bad of an idea. Z

    I do not have a tattoo, but I do wish to have one or get one soon. I think they have become so commonplace in the U.S. for many reasons. One being they look pretty. People think tattoos are cool, and if everyone else is getting one, then why not get one, right? I also think tattoos are a great way to express yourself, and to represent things that have happened in your life.

  13. I have 0 tattoos but have a good insight of why people want to get them. I think it has to do with everyone wants to show off and showcase who they are to everyone. It's an easy way to tell one another apart and they always tell a story.

    I believe that they are common placed in the united states because people view tattoos as being a form of art work. People can express themselves not only by speaking but by modifying their bodies with all kinds of tattoos. I also believe they became so common in the U.S because a majority of people have a tattoos, and people tend to follow current trends.

    I think tattoos in America have become more of a drunken mistake than a symbolic meaning. If you've ever watched the show Bad Ink you can see a ton of horrible tattoos on people who were way too drunk when they picked them. This is not to say they all don't have meaning. Some people do get tattoos that represent something in their lives. Derk, from Bad Ink, normally does some type symbolic cover-up. Honestly I think they should always mean something to you. You're the one who will have to live with it for the rest of your life...

      I'm sure there are those lame tattoo parlors that are hurting so badly for the revenue that they will take anyone that walks through their door; drunk, high, underage, etc. a decent reputable parlor will only take sober, of age customers that sign a waiver. This makes for a more happy customer with a better selected tattoo.

    I have two tattoos, as does the wife. A long, long time ago, we each got a certain unity symbol as a tattoo. It is meant to represent two beings that can function individually, yet also gives support to and receives support from the other. In the past in America, the people who had tattoos were military or gang members for the most part. While people generally accepted that military members had tattoos, others were considered outlaws/outsiders/criminals. In recent years, the negative ideas about those with tattoos have pretty much gone away, and having a tattoo is really no big deal. There are those who don't want something permanent on their body, and there are those who may be afraid to get a tattoo. I think that is fine, just as someone wanting a tattoo is fine. In the end, it is a personal choice and should be made after careful consideration over time.

  18. Tattoos have become a common thing in America because of the popularity in being yourself. People are going more now for the recreation and inspiration. I want to get one to symbolize certain beliefs of mine, other want to show their artistic side, while some just go to get one to fit in. Tattoos have long gone from the list of taboo things since it is so commonly practiced. I love the individuality of the tattoos as well.

    I do not have a tattoo, but I think that people use tattoos as a type of personal expression. I believe they see the tattoo as a celebration of their individuality. Tattoos are permanent, so therefore they often become a part of who that person it. It represent something that the person believes, or some group that they are a part of. For example a lot of people will get tattoos of scripture or crosses, because that is something they value, or others will get tattoos of some type of group that they apart of that helps to define their identity. The tattoo is representative of how those activities or beliefs are a part of who that person is. You would be unable to separate that person from that thing they identify themselves with just as you would be unable to separate that person from their tattoo. It makes since that in our culture, which is one that puts great emphasis on individuality that people would want to have something unique to represent themselves, or put them into a group away from everyone else. The people who I know that have tattoos take great pride in them and wear as a badge of uniqueness. They are proud to be individuals or are proud to be a part of something they value so deeply.

    I don't have any tattoos. I personally feel they are tacky and don't want to make that type of commitment with what is essentially just art. I don't mind others having tattoos, they just aren't for me. I think they are so popular because it is an expression of personality, religion, hobbies, family, and many other things. Some people feel a strong need to express their individuality and this is one way to do that. I know some people get religious scriptures to remind themselves of certain things, which is really hypocritical because the Bible says that you shouldn't mark your body. Also some people use their bodies as living memorials for friends or families that have passed away. Some just do it out of drunkenness, for a laugh.

People who have these tattoos have their own reasons of having those tats but i also think some people just wanted to have the tattoo as a way of fun or use them as a fashion just because someone is having a tattoo so they might also feel like going to have one for themselves too.

    I think the reason why tattoo has become common in united state is because, most people have it as away of decoration, the same way people wear jewelry. Not like in the past where people put it as a symbol to remind them of something happened in their lives at specific time. Tattoo has lost meaning to many people nowadays it has become a fashion.

      I totally agree with you that tattoos have lost their meaning which is quite a shame. I have often considered getting a tattoo but even though it would mean a great deal to me, I'm also afraid of what it won't mean. Tattoos are about being an individual but how can you be an individual when you are just like everyone else? And yes, each tattoo is different but I'd rather just be plain old me at this point.

    I have three tattoos. One on my foot, one on my left back shoulder, and one on my hip. The one on my foot is just a star. This tattoo is just a fun little one I got. The one on my back left shoulder is a cross. I got this cross tattoo to symbolize being a christian. I got this one during the hard times of my life. The one on my hip is a treble clef. This was the first tattoo I ever got. I got this when I was a music student at Reinhardt to symbolize my love and passion for music. I believe that each person has their own opinion on tattoos. If they want a tattoo they get it; if not, then they don't.

    I do not have any Tattoos and do not intend to have any ever.
    I believe the reason why Tattoos have become a common place in United States is because most people what to make a statement inform of an art. I also think even though some places despise Tattoos, not every one does, therefore making it easier for people to have them. For example sports, a lot of the professional players do have Tattoos and young people think these people look cool and so they can also get one to look like them. My son asked me some day if tattoos are bad as I claim, why does LeBron james have them. so influence also do play a role.

    One reason tattoos have become commonplace is because, as an individualistic society, tattoos provide a great way for one to express oneself. As a society, we are pulling apart from the group and becoming more about ourselves, perhaps getting a little more selfish, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I mean to say that people want others to see what they represent regardless of whether or not it offends others or if they even care. I personally would never get a tattoo, but that doesn't mean tattoos are bad. Of course many people get dumb tattoos for dumb reasons or no reason at all. One of my favorite things to do when I'm bored is to search the internet for spelling mistakes on tattoos. On the other hand, I also sometimes like to watch LA Ink. A lot of the artists on this show are truly amazing and if I were to ever get a tattoo, I would certainly go to someone featured on this show. More likely though I would just ask them to paint me a picture I can hang on my wall.

    I am actually getting my first tattoo next week! I am getting it on my wrist and it is a small heart with a piece of my daughter's heartbeat attached to it. She is nine months old and is my first child. I am very excited about it and it will have plenty of meaning to me.

  27. As of right now I do not have a tattoo, however, I may get a tattoo that could symbolize something in the future. Ideally tattoos have been around for quite a long time. It is common to see an American with a tattoo if you're walking down the street. I believe Americans are so common with tattoos is due to the social standards of your surroundings. If your father or mother are the stereotypical biker parents then most likely you may get a tattoo as they do. Now there are other occasions that could symbolize a nature of tattoos such as rock concerts or other events.

    Tattoos have become fairly common in the United States today, almost seemingly to be the new norm. Tattoos today have become a fad or trend in which everyone is getting them for whatever reason. I believe that media has had quite the influence on these permanent ink marks. I personally do not have a tattoo and am not against them. I believe there are many reasons why people get tattoos, in which all responses are expected to be different

    I don't like tattoos, so I don't have any. As a christian, I don't think tattoo is for me, and I always encourage my children not to ever have one because there are many different ways someone can represent herself or manifest her love without cover her body with ink. I am not judging others who choose to have tattoos for any reason because they are free to do anything with their body as I am free to do anything with my. One time, I was watching divorce court, there was a man who had his wife's name written on his chest, when they were getting divorce he wanted the woman to pay for the cost of his tattoo removal; she refuse because she said that was his own decision. The judge did not approve his demand either and told him: " you will learn not to make stupid mistake in the future." I think tattoos has become so common place in the United States because of imitation. One person start with it, another one says it is cool I am going to have one too and so on. Some of them don't even have a good reason for it.

    I do not have any tattoo's nor do I plan on getting any. I feel that people are getting tattoos for fashion reason. since tattoos are a fashion statement they feel that they should get one .while other people would get something that has meaning to them like a cross.as they get older most of them begin to regret why they got it in the first place or why they didn't get something else.so basically I just feel that people in the states are just doing it because it the in thing at the moment.

      I do agree that some people get tattoos because they want to fit in, or convey a certain image, and that's unfortunate. However, I do have to disagree that tattoos are the 'in thing' at the moment. People across the world have been getting tattoos for a very long time and for a wide array of reasons. They are nothing new and people will continue getting tattoos for a long time to come.

    I have a tattoo and it is a chest piece that says "We Are Nothing Without Brotherhood". Now I am one to not get tattoos that are most common, I like to be original and actually have meaning. So this means to me that without the bond of brotherhood or friendship then people are nothing. You need to have someone there for you . Also in a biblical sense it can mean we are all brothers and sisters in the words of god. Other then that I got it mainly to just symbolize the love I have for my family and friends.

I also think having something in the biblical sense might be a little better since it says in the bible that we are suppose to treat our bodies like temples.

    I do not have a tattoo. I am not against them and would get one but I don't think I would like what I like now ten years down the road. In other words, my style changes so I don't know what I would like permanently. Additionally, it is frowned upon in the Christian religion which I am. I think so many people are getting them to show "originality". In some cases people get genuinely meaningful things but other cases if they are drunk and have some cash its a good idea. To me, certain people are beautiful with tattoos; me, not so much.

I totally agree with you, growing up in a Christian home it's not good at all to have tattoos and to this day I still hear about it because now I have a 17 year old sister who would like to follow in my footsteps. I am not totally against tattoos because I would be the pot calling the kettle black, but I also believe in taste. I feel if you will have tattoos, allow them to be tasteful, I don't want to look at someone and have to see a canvas or mural, I would like to see someone for who they are. I would never get a tattoo that I cannot cover in uniform or business clothes.

    I personally do not have a tattoo. I think the reason that they have become so common place is for people to feel like they are different from everyone else or to stand out more. They may want their bodies to say something to others. On the other hand tattoos might be part of a certain class of people and if they want to fit in they need to get tattoos. I also think to certain people they become addictive after getting one they keep wanting to get more.

  35. So, I have four tattoos. The first one I received when I was 17, yes, I was very young, I was honestly following in the footsteps of my sister, I do not regret it but it's very stupid. That one is just my name "Phonecia", I hear so much flap about it from " Don't you know your name?", to "Who are you trying to remind?" or even worse "Are you a hooker? Do you know that many people that you have to remind them of what your name is ?" The second tat I have is ballerina shoes on my right shoulder blade with my birthdate under it, it symbolizes my love for dance. I danced for seven years and then upon completion of basic combat training, the things I could do, I could do no more. So it's a reminder to me that regardless, dance is still apart of me and forever will be. The third tat I have is a butterfly. It's located on my left shoulder blade. It symbolizes freedom, it reminds me of where my life was and where it is going, regardless of what I do, I want to be free and happy, and live a beautiful life, to me that's what a butterfly is. My last tattoo is the word Amour "love" on my right hip, it's a sisterhood tattoo, my other two sisters got the same word just in a different language and for us it doesn't matter what we do, where we go in the world, and how we end up, what will never change is our love for each other. I support people who choose not to have tattoos, and in a way I look at them as pure and now more so RARE, but I do love my tattoos and what they stand for in my life.

    I have a few tattoos I will describe, but first I will mention that all of my tattoos are able to be hidden under clothing. This is societies influence on me. When I got each piece of art tattooed on my body, I took into consideration the image I need to keep in the working world and I would never want to limit my potential to earn money for my family. Not everyone accepts tattoos and I got them for myself, not to show off, so I kept them in areas that could be covered, but also, exposed when I choose. When I am around people who don't agree with them, if able, I will wear something that covers them out of respect, but I also expect that same respect right back. On my upper arm, I have a triskel surrounded by foliage and topped with a person praying into sunrise/set. This for me symbolizes self awareness and my relationship with God. I also have a trinity knot on the back of my neck which was my first tattoo. My dear brother is in the US Navy and I got an anchor on my foot for him and to symbolize stability and grounding. I have my daughter initials very small behind my ear as well. I love my tattoos. I got them for me, and there a part they'll always be.

    In today's society, lot of people are having tattoo not because they want to look famous, or just because they want a mark on their skins. Tattoo back then was mostly base on tradition but today, it is not just tradition. Our generation today, uses tattoo to symbolize many things they been through or going through. I have two tattoos on my both arm. The one on my right is a cross that say "Only God Can Judge me. This tattoo play a major role in my life. When I was born, my dad wasn't around me and at the age of 6, my mom move away from me due to family reason and to get a better income that will help support me. I was raised by my grandma who was never home until 8 due to her business activities. Basically i was was a 6 years old child who was passing around from one place to another, nowhere to rest, not in school and some friends and family even start to judge me as a kid with no mom or dad. When i finally get to see my mom at the age of 9, she then make me to realized that no matter what people say about me, the only person that can Judge me is God and that I should write that down and always keep that in mind as life go on. How ever, I didn't get to meet my dad until i was 11 and I dont have that connection with him that I always share with my mom.

    My second tattoo is a praying hand with a rosary and a quote that say Faith, Hope and Love. My mom make me to understand that no matter where we come from, who we socialize with, what race we might, what we been through, or what we are going through, I should always remember those three words because it is what make you who you are, it is what separate you from other, it is what make life interesting and worth living, and over all, it is what give us life. She make me to understand that Hope, Faith and Love give life to us, and that with out these attributes, life is nothing. I can assured everyone that I am not the best kid in the world, but i am a kid who always try to make the difference in the society by helping other and treating them the way I want to be treated. Thanks to my Mom who open the way to life for me and make me to understand the interesting factor of life. I can proudly say that Faith is what got me started, Hope is what make me strong and Love is what make my day seem brighter.

  39. I don't personally have any tattoos, but I do understand why it has become a lot more common to do so in the United States. First, tattoos are a subtle, or not so subtle, way for people to express their individuality. With so many laws and rules telling people what to do, when to do it, and how to do it everyday, our bodies are the one thing that no one but ourselves have sovereignty over. Some people do it to rebel and others it can be meaningful to them. Whatever reason they have, they can do it ( as long as they are over 18 ) and no on can tell them not to. The most popular reason, in my opinion, though is because of mainstream culture. It's no secret that everyone is seeing their favorite artist - singer or rap - getting tattoos and making songs that praise tattoos. Even celebrities are jumping on the bandwagon. Seeing these images and praise can definitely have a great influence. It's very much so a trend to have a tat.. or two.

      I agree with you because the trend these days are to have tattoos at least one or two. Our body is our temple that only we ourselves can use. With so many laws out there people do what to rebel sometimes and do something that could be meaningful or meaningless to themselves that no one can control but them.

    I do not have a tattoo. I believe that they are some type of rebellion for people these days. Not many people get tattoos because of something really important to them. I believe it is like 50/50. People will either get a tattoo because a family member passed or to remember something or maybe whatever they are getting tattooed on them is very important to them. Other people just don't care and get whatever looks cool. Such as I know some one who has eggs and bacon on his head. There was absolutely no reason for him to do that to himself besides he was like that would be so awesome....

    I do not have a tattoo.
    I feel like tattoos are designed to be a reminder to us as individuals. Seeing your tattoo would remind you of why you got it, whatever reason that may be. It is also a way to tell your lifes story to someone when you meet them. E.g. if you have a tattoo from the military then people will see that and know you are a veteran. Thus, giving them some information about you right off the bat.
    However, I think the main reason is personal reminders of past events or people. Plus they look awesome.

Some people get tattoos to express their creative side, some get them because they symbolize something important to them, and some get them just to have them. Tattoos are just away for people to separate themselves and be individual from others.

I think its a beautiful display of art and a great representation of things that mean alot to you. When I turn 18 im going to get the medical staff with the two snakes wrapped around it and the wing coming off it. It is a way for people to express an emotion, event or season of life in a way that will stay with them forever. Like a gang or something less violent like the iron man competition. The second reason is to set them apart from others. To make them feel like they are even more one of a kind than they were before.     I personally do not have a tattoo, but my dad and sister do. My dad got one to match his brother, and my sister got some to do in memory of loved ones. She also did some just because she could. With this being said, I can think of three reasons of why I think that tattoos have become common in the United States. One reason would be because some people get them just because they can. I have had family members get them the day they turned 18 just because they could. The second reason would be that people get them to symbolize something important to them, and that could be done in the memory of a loved one or an accomplishment. The third reason that I can think of is that sometimes two people, whether another family member or friend, get one to match each other. These are the reasons that I think tattoos have become so common.

    I have a few tattoos, most of which represent my kids. I have all of their names on my shoulders. Those three do not bother me at the time I got them out of love for my children and art. I have other tattoos though that after years I find ridiculous. They represent things and ways of thinking in my life that no longer exist. As of right now I am still a fan of tattoos just not on me. I think they are a great way to express your self in you remember that they are permanent.

    I do not have any tattoos, my spouse has 2 tattooss one on each arm. Which both tattoos were from his younger days. I have asked him why he wanted them, one is his initials that a friend did at home at 15years old, that he thought was cool at the time. The other is a cross and a rose, which he got for rememberance for a loved one that had passed away. Then my 2 newphews and one neice that we raised all 3 have tattoos each. The tattoos are in places that can be covered up, because people will judge you on their first impression and employers may not hire you because of the tattoos. I think tattoos are a good way to express yourself and your individuality. At work this weekend a friend who is in the medical field showed me 2 videos that show 2 people with tattoos and what happened when they got infected. Needless to say dont watch video before lunch. Before getting tattoos, do your homework and make sure it is a clean tattoo palor and talk to other customers. I was raised that you are not supposed to get tattoos on your body, my spouse had tried to talk me into getting one, I dont think that will ever happen. Because I dont think I could stand the pain and it would be going against what I was taught. I think the new thing with getting tattoos on the inside of your lips is strange. I just saw a picture of Miley Cyrus with her new tattoo inside her bottom lip. It is sad when a person has a big influence on young children start going wild and doing crazy things.

    I currently do not have any tattoos but I plan on getting some in the future. I believe that tattoos has become more common because for teenagers, they are a sign of rebellion or simply a sign that they are in complete control of "their" body and no one can tell them otherwise, even their parents or the law. With that being said, I do not believe that applies to all tattoos. I believe tattoos has taken on the image of art in the United States, more specifically, I believe that for some believe that to some people, tattoos are a form of make up. What I mean by that is that they may not be completely happy with their looks and so they get something that is beautiful to them, placed permanently on their bodies to raise self confidence.

    The biggest reason that I think tattoos have become so common place within the United States is because, to put it simply, the body is your personal canvas. A majority of people tend to see themselves as a walking display of their own personality and interests - not to mention monuments and homages to people lost and things they love. Tattoos vary from a favourite game character, to favourite sayings, to gravestones of fallen loved ones. They're one of the most universal forms of expression, and something that you carry with you always that no one can take from you.

    I don't have tattoos but i think that most people get them because they have strong meanings to them. I don't have anything against them I think they look nice but I wouldn't get one since i have since old people with them and they don't look that nice anymore. One of my co-workers was 7 months pregnant and her baby passed away in her stomach, the umbilical cord got rapped in the baby's neck and suffocated. Her husband tattooed a baby angel on his chest in memory of him. So i think people have tattoos for symbolic reasons.

I love this tattoo drawing because I drew it. It also just says a lot about me. I support everybody that has one. My fiance has my name tattooed on her chest. It means so much to both of us. Every ink means something to somebody and they have reasons for getting them.

    I think tattoos have become a common place in america is because everyone wants one. I remember back in my freshman year of High school all these freshman will go to this man house because he can give you tattoos without a parent consent, because they were all under the age 18. Once you get a tattoo they think they fit in and belong in the world. Me I am a seventh day Adventist so I cant get tattoos or any piercing because that it is breaking the commandment were your body is the temple of God. When I walk in a room or tell people I don't have tattoos or piercing they look at me weird and tell me they can't be me. They see as something is missing with a tattoo.

    I do not have a tattoo but I intend to get one to represent my daughter who has a mitochondrial disease. I believe people are getting tattoos because of some major event that might have happened in their lives. I also believe that tattoos tell some kind of story. I use to think that having a whole bunch of tattoos was kind of tacky but after working on this project and doing my research I have a better understanding of why someone may have so many tattoos. Its kind of like a charm bracelet, each charm tells a story well each tattoo tells a story also. That is how I view tattoos.

    I have two tattoos one of them was a stupid mistake, a little heart on my wrist, that meant nothing to me but simply because I was 17 years of age and I couldn't wait any longer to have a tattoo. But then my big tattoo covering my right thigh was meant for my grandfather, he had lived with us for about 2 years and was going down hill around the time of mine and his birthday (June) and I saw this amazing tattoo, big and meaningful of a hot air balloon that had dandelions as the balloon part. The dandelions were breaking off of the hot air balloon and each stem had a quote about life and enjoying life and life after death, to me it just ment that death if a horrible thing but can also be a beautiful thing and I got it to remind me of my grandfather going through his last moments of his life. I am planning on getting another tattoo that will also have me remember him of a dream catcher (yes every girl wants one) but mine would actually mean something, my grandfather donated to this school somewhere in a different country and as a gift of return they made him dream catchers and every time he got one he would give them to me, I've been getting them from him since I was 7 years old and I got my last one this past Christmas when the school sent it to our house because he had passed away. I keep both the first and very last one hanging up in my car and plan someday to get that tattoo.

    I do not have a tattoo nor do i ever plan on getting a tattoo, but i think that most people in the united states get tattoos because it the cool thing to do. Since a lot of people are having tattoos they feel they should get one just to fit in with the crowd.but there are people who do get tattoos that mean something to them. then there are people who get them to express themselves. I know a couple of people who tattoos when the where teenagers and if you ask them why they got it they would not. many of them told me because it was cool and other people had them but now they hate it and wish the never did it. That is the major reason why i would never get a tattoo.

My first is a pink/black tribal design on my lower back. #2 is 4 butterflies on my right ankle bc I love butterflies. #3 is a pink/black heart that doesn't completely meet at the top and bottom and has little slivers missing along the edges. It also has a pink bow inside it. I drew this myself right after my divorce, and it's right below my bikini line. It symbolizes that my heart may be broken, but it's still good and repairable. #4 MaKayla, my youngest daughter on my right wrist. # 5 AnnTyler, my oldest daughter on my left wrist. #6 pink/black tribal with butterfly down my right rib. #7 pink/black tribal cross between my shoulder blades. #8 pink, green, yellow, purple breast cancer awareness butterfly upper right arm that I drew myself in honor of my mother.
    All of my tats have pink in them bc pink is my favorite color. I have a lot of butterflies because they are so alive and free. The cross represents my faith in Christ.
