Soc Fest Summer 2013

Greetings! Namaste! Chao! Saludos! Merhaba! Howdy!

What did you find most interesting about Soc Fest? Was it the display or story of a classmate, or was it information you discovered about yourself and your culture as you worked on the project?

What I found the most interesting was all the different cultures that were all displayed. I didn't think it was going to be as big as it really was. It was very interesting learning about other people's cultures.

    1. I agree with you on the size of the event,I was expecting a smaller group. I think it was a wonderful turnout!

  2. I found it fascinating how much pride everyone seems to have in his or her culture. I think everyone did an outstanding job! I truly got a sense of how different we all are, yet how similar at our core. I genuinely enjoyed meeting the people around me, especially the young women right beside me who was also from Georgia (as I am). It was amusing to see the view of Georgia’s heritage from the eyes of an 18 year old. We both brought corn bread and talked about our mothers loving to bake (I guess some things do not change with time). I had a fabulous time and loved seeing all the different places represented and meeting new people.

  6. I enjoyed walking around and learning something new about everyone else even if it was something small. I learned a lot of people share cooking with their family and sometimes just food in general a great bonding experience with others. It was the first time I had ever put my baking skills out on display to people besides family and I was very greatful that everyone enjoyed them. Not one single thing was left from my table. :)

The Soc fest was an interesting cultural event. Most interesting to me was the actual visualization of the cultural items/heritages of other cultures. Talking to others in this event was really interesting and a good experience.

The event was interesting, even though I was only there for a little bit, I enjoyed it. Not only did I get to meet other classmates but also I met people of the same culture. And finding out things that other cultures share the same as mine. I wished I had more time exploring though.

The Soc Fest was great. It was more than I expected.I really enjoyed talking to everyone and tasting food from all over the world. And the African dance was the best.I love watching people express themselves in their native culture. You should always have this event. I even learned a little more about myself. I need to really organized my military awards. I had to hunt hard for them among my stuff.

I was extremely fascinated by all of the cultures that were being represented. I enjoyed all of the beautiful display, native clothing, and all the tasty treats. It was nice to meet people from different countries and learn about where they came from. While preparing for my project I learned more about my maternal family, including their surname the land in Alabama. The Soc Fest was a wonderful event that helped me learn more about my family and the culture of others.

I loved the Soc Fest, it's like a people watchers party and it's sociably acceptable to ask questions about race and background. I loved the colors, the foods, and how friendly everyone was!

Unfortunately, the SOC FEST fell on a day that I was not able to make it to campus. We had a family vacation that was planned for over a year that was much needed. However, it sounds like it was a great success and very neat to read about! I am really disappointed that I could not be a part of it. However, I am learning so much while I do my research for the paper that I am writing to replace my grade for missing the SOC FEST. I am truly glad that it was such a success for our class!

  13. I could not attend soc fest because i had to work until 5pm tat night. i didnt know i had to work until a few daysw prior so i still took a look at the project. since i didnt go, i cant say much about the expirence being there, but what i found most interesting was the fact that your culture could be something as little as the base ball field. i was raised on the ball field and i was raised around tons of braves memoribilia, so if i were to of gone, that's what my project would of been on. the good ol' ATLANTA braves. est 1966.

Soc Fest was really interesting and I enjoyed the different foods from everyone. It was also an eye opener for me about the mixed cultures we have here in Georgia. I love that people were open to learning and sharing it all with everyone.

  21. I really thought that the soc. fest was very interesting. I loved the way that each person displayed their culture in their own way. I did learn some new things about my own heritage that I didn't even know. (Different Italian cultures) Digging thru old memories and recipes with my grandmother I learned some new things that my great-grandmother brought over from Italy. I thought that everybody did a great job! Lots of yummy food too, which was a plus! The dirty rice from LA was YUMMY!!!! :)

I was most amazed that this one online class had so many different people form so many different places! The food was amazing also! I want to go again next year!

The Soc fest was a great experience; I really enjoyed every bit of the fest; the foods were nice and the cultural presentations exposed me to other people’s way of doing things and how important these representations are to their particular culture or group. It reminded me of the Olympic opening ceremonies, where all nations appear in their different ways of dressing, with some even showing more than just the clothing. I enjoyed it and would like to witness it at international level.

The soc fest was so interesting to me and i enjoyed every part of it.The presentations and food were wonderful and not forgetting the fact that did learn about some other cultures which were different from mine. I could not imagine what i saw, maybe next time it should be taken to a national level and why not international.

What i found most interesting was the military aspect of the soc. fest. I am very interested in joining a certain branch and it was nice to have a variety of branches that weren't obligated to try and get me to join theirs. I learned a lot about the good and the bad of every branch available. I found this event very interesting and entertaining and learned a lot about other cultures. I would probably attend this even if i wasn't assigned to do the project.

I loved learning about all the different cultures of my classmates! I especially loved all the different foods. I went into it with an open mind and tried almost everything that was there. I really enjoyed the Indian display and all the African and island countries. I would never have gotten to try 99% of these cultures' foods in my every day life. Thank you everyone for all your hard work, it was a great time!

Awesome. I have never seen anything like this before. I have been to other cultural event, like the Asian one where only Asian (mainly Chinese) display their culture. This is usually only a display of food and clothing.
I did notice a very big difference with "OUR" Soc Fest. Not only did we have displays of different cultures, but the traditions carried from generations was displayed.
I walked around the room and ate from every single table. I learned so much about the different traditions within people from the same culture.
I also learned more about my culture and traditions especially about the lablab bean which I had no idea existed anywhere else and thought was only from my country. That was most exciting part of research. I also found out, that different ages of the Kikuyu woman have different names and roles, a thing that made me feel proud of my culture and traditions.
I brought my niece as my center piece, dressed in our traditional regalia. She is a senior in High school, and that was an experience and a taste of college for her.
This was sure one of the best and memorable experiences I ever had. To summarize it, ......Awesome.!.

I agree with you. It was really awesome experience. I enjoyed mingling with different types of people and hearing their stories about their cultures and subculture. Although I've seen the same culture as mine, I am still amazed that I still have so many things yet to discover about my culture.

  30. Tanja K. 64: I think it was very interesting to learn about other cultures. When I walked in the room, there were already a lot of tables set up and I was blown away by the effort that everybody put in their project. I always think it is amazing to see the different foods different cultures have. It might be ingredients I use every day, but they are cooked differently with other spices that I would have never thought of. I really think everybody did a great job and there was a great variety of cultures represented.

What I found most interesting about the Soc Fest was that I learned a lot about myself while working on my project. I thought that our family was just big baseball fans but I learned that because we dedicate so much of our time into baseball and hanging around other families and friends that are involved in baseball, that we are actually a subculture. I also realized that my family actually spends more than 80% of our time on baseball. We watch baseball games on TV, we go to baseball games, and we are involved in baseball by either playing games or coaching. I love it would not change our lives for anything because this is what our family does to spend time together.

I was surprised at the amount of food and people were there. I didnt need to eat dinner once I left. Learning about someone elese culture by speaking directly to them and hearing their story was the most intresting thing to me. I really enjoyed the first hand interaction while I was there.

    1. I agree that it was refreshing to learn about someone's cultures first hand. As I walked around the room it was interesting at how every station there was a story, there were memories shared and a deeper understanding that could not be gained from a textbook because we could relate better through that person's experiences and explaination of where they came from.

The SocFest was a culture shock to me. I experienced food and music from various parts of the world. Walking around the auditorium and experiencing other cultures brought me to a realization. It showed me how proud I am of my cultural background and how through cultural relativism, we can accept other cultures and not holding beliefs against one another; ethnocentrism.

I completely agree with you. I knew there were a lot of different cultures but seeing everybodies laid out like that was a shock to me as well. As much as I would like to believe it, Italians really aren't everywhere you turn. ;)

    2. I also experienced the same pride in my culture at the event. I noticed this especially when we had to explain our culture to others. I guess being around new people and sharing something about where I'm from, as well as learning something about someone else that is personal, creates a relationship based off of a cultural respect.

I agree that the military cultural presentations were very fufilling. The cultures of the military were portrayed and elaborated on what was specifically asked; atleast in my situation. There was no persuasion on joining, rather it was educational on how one's life might be lived while fighting for freedom and America.

  44. I think that the most striking occurrence that stuck out to me was the live dancing. I thought it was very entertaining to watch. What also got to me was the amount of information that I learned about my family and extended family. I didn't know that my family has such culture.

The amazing part about the Soc Fest was I got the chance to mingle with different types of people. When I went to these one particular project, at first I was impress by the photos, but as soon as she started explaining and sharing some photos I was astonished on how we shared some cultures. Like guys courted ladies instead of dating them or how soon to be husband pamanhikan or in english asking the parents of their future wife for their daughter's hand while bringing many foods to impress the parents, and how the women are expected to cook and serve their husband.

I wish I could have attended the Soc Fest! From everyone's blog responses it seems amazing. However, in planning for the event, I found pleasure in learning how I am a part of so many different subcultures and how similar those subcultures are across the world. From mindsets, to clothing, to communication, our similarities with one another are many times spot on within one subculture even though we may be thousands of miles apart!

  52. I enjoyed the Sociology Fest. Because of the samples brought in, I realized how similar multiple cultures are to each other, regardless of the distance in locations and backgrounds. The event also revealed the diversity within a class and displayed the pride that we each have in our heritage. Being from the west coast and this being my first year in the South, it was nice to run into others that shared my background as well as meeting and learning about other cultures so much like my own.
