Food for Everyone

The Georgia Museum of Agriculture in Tifton has a small section on food, where barbeque figures prominently. One panel suggests that barbecue is one of the foods that brings people together across gender, age, race, class and other social barriers.  This point has merit.

What food items or categories (NOT restaurants) can you think of that truly transcend the boundaries of our social divisions?

Let’s take religion out of the equation, as Judaism and Islam place prohibitions on pork. Hindus don’t consume beef, and they, along with many Buddhist, are often vegetarians.  There are too many religious restrictions to note, so for this situation, we are only considering gender, age, race and class.

Here in America, I think ice cream is a food that crosses most of the lines of age, gender, race, etc. unless you have a dairy problem. We feed it to our babies, kids can be seen running around the yards with a cone dripping down their hand in the summer, most of us have it with cake, to celebrate special occasions. From Bob's Dairy Dipper in the small towns to DQ, to the high end shops, we Americans love our ice cream.

I have always participated in pot-luck style get-togethers and chili and dessert contests have always made its way into the equation. Therefore, I think that any get-together involving good desserts (ice cream parties, baking contests, etc.) would work well to get people from all social aspects.

I for one think that Pizza is a true food that has crossed all cultural boundaries. You can pretty much go to any country, minus the island countries that are limited to food choice, and get a typical, local-to-the-area pie with a good selection of toppings. If you go to marietta square, there is a sushi pizza at Thaicoon which consists of raw tuna, aioli, and a few spices on a bread with rice.

I agree that pizza is the most common liked food around. Its amazing how it started as an Italian dish and is now an all time favorite around the world especially in the United States. Its also amazing how the pizza can be altered to fit any individual liking. Its very versatile which probably why its so popular. I may have to try out that spot in Marietta.

Well I have traveled all over the country, lived in five states, and traveled overseas and everywhere I have been, there is Pizza. I remember the family’s first meal in Turkey was Pizza. We rented a house for six months and right across the street was a restraint whose main menu item was New York Pizza. The owner was from Brooklyn and had the imprudence flown in every week, even the water. Therefore, even though I think there are other foods that transcend all borders, I have to say in my experience Pizza wins. I will say also that Pizza has a way of being able to take on the local flavor like no other food does. There are so menu variations of it that it amazes me. I grew up on NY pizza, a will say that nothing compares with the pizza I got after school from a long narrow hole in the wall place at the bus stop. I often wonder if it is still there. Next trip I will go find out.

I think food is a common language that everyone loves to speak. I mean really, its just about always involved in some way, meetings, parties, family get togethers, dates, etc. Coffee, for one, I believe is a main one. People gather together to talk in a coffee shop, grab a cup for a fellow co-worker or even sit on the porch in the mornings with the family and all have a cup together. Not only coffee, but add some sweets into the mix and now were talking on an even more serious note. Who likes to turn down a sweet treat? Yes, pizza, burgers and wings are all traditional american food that breaks down any social barrier but I think coffee does too. Americans are incredibly dependent on it. I think that is proven when they are willing to spend 5 bucks on a cup from Starbucks.

I think that I would have to say that Pizza is a food or dish that brings people together and transcends the boundaries of our social divisions. Pizza is now an American staple. Everyone from little kids to grown adults likes pizza. Because of this and the fact that it’s a quick and easy meal lets all people enjoy it. In addition I think it helps that it can be delivered to you. All Americans like things done fast, so this is very convenient… you can order the pizza on your way home from work, and it will be delivered right as you pull up to the driveway! Now that’s convenient!

I never would have thought of white rice, but you’re right, almost every culture uses this food in one way or another for their dishes. And the fact that it can be paired with almost anything makes it a good filler for a meal, it can almost be a substitute for potatoes… which is another food that is used commonly in a lot of cultures.

People who live in a particular area may attend "Taste of-" festivals. Food always seems to attract people as food is needed for our physical bodies. Many social occasions revolve around food. Different kinds of parties draw people together. I think pasta is a food that can be made many ways. People seem to enjoy salads and main dishes with this ingredient. County fairs also attract a variety of people and have exhibits and amusements that others enjoy. When I attended the Renaissance Festival I noticed many ages and also both males and females. Now lets talk about smores. Even if you don't like chocolate or marshmallows who can resist making smores. We didn't say we had to consume the food. Barbeques bring people together in the United States we generally say, "Let's Grill", but in Canada they say, "Let's have a Barbeque", and most often there is no barbeque sauce. The sweet smell of sugar burning on an open fire, just as in barbeque sauce, evokes our sensory memory. We take memory snapshots of these "good times" www.the human memory.net
In our desire to nuture, we invite our friends and family; people we love and care about to consume something we hope they will enjoy. Most people like some form of chocolate. Smores are now made in a variety of mild, dark, white, and flavored chocolates. Graham crackers was one of the first finger foods babies could be given when teething, the better part of teething as we knew it. Social status hasn't been mentioned much but most people with allow for sticky fingers, (wet wipes ready) for a smores. Get ready National Smores day is August 10th, www.smoresontherun.com Girl Scouts claim the fame of smores in 1940. I think this food ranks high in crossing all the boundaries of age, race, sex , and social status.

The number one food item that appeals to every man or woman, boy or girl, old and young is salad. As a matter of fact, it is a major part of every meal. Most restaurants, whether Chinese, Italian, Mexican, African, American, Japanese, and so on has this food item on their menu list. This food item transcend the boundaries of our social division. Aside the fact that it is eaten by people from all works of life, it is also a food item that's recommended for healthy living.

I am from the south, so my entire life the foods that have brought us together are msome good ole country cooking. My family along with friends surrounding us have always grown there own vegetables and hunted there own meat. So when I think of the food that brings us together I think of deer jearky, green beans, corn, fried chicken, biscuits and gravy. I can't tell you how many people sit aroud my table when these foods are prepared. And of course the main one...SWEET TEA!! My family can't live without some good old sweet tea!! It brings every meal together!

I think hamburgers, hotdogs, or "grilling out" food brings people together. I also think coffee and pastries brings people together to socialize.

In addition to my previous comment, I also think pizza is a type of food.that crosses barriers. Pizza is found in schools, work, parties, ect to celebrate.

Pizza is definitely the 'food' of choice. Because pizza can come in so many flavors and arrangements and still be generically referred to as pizza, it is easy to find a 'pizza' that everyone agrees on. The next would be the burger and/or hotdog. a cookout always has burgers and dogs and everyone seems to find a buger or dog that thye like. These are easy social events to attend as one can get the pizza, burger, or dog, just the way they want without being singled out.

Well this was back in the 80's so I am sure it was more afordable. I am sorry I do not remember the cost from back then. I was wonderful, especially when you spend the day walking through the market with all the hanging chickens with flies on them! Some one said salad, I think that was a good answer too and very good for you. I also think tea or coffee as a beverage would be the top drinks.

  66. Q Higgins 49 I think soul food also brings families and generations together, esipically in the south. Sunner dinner is a time for laughter, memories, and togetherness.

I definatelly agree with what is being said. It is not only food that brings people together, but also drinks whether it is coffee or alcohol. Some people put whiskey in tea or coffee for an extra kick in other contries. though Food is a social gathering that brings peopole together but it breaks the ice for any event.

I agree with the idea of drinks bringing people together. Even if it didn't involve alcohol. Most people like to get together for tea and have a nice talk.

  70. i think that sishi brings people together of all ethnicitys. When sushi was brought over to america, we were exposed to a new way of eating fish. It brought their culture to us. We use chopsticks to each suchi, as the japanese and chinese use chopsticks to eat almost all of their meals. It also brings together different age groups, some people think eating sushi shows sophistication.

I think pizza brings people of all ethnic backgrounds together. I mean who doesn't like a good pizza. You can customized them just the way you want. You can get a taste of a little of everything. It doesn't matter if your from America or China pizza is a food that any and everyone can enjoy no matter how you choose to top it!

I think that having a pot luck brings everyone together. The reason is that you have a lot of different cultures in your community and by doing this shows them that you are open to their culture and might enjoy and want to be around them more than just social events.

  73. Answering this topic came fairly easy to me. The food that brings people together the most, regardless of age, gender and race, is definitely cake. Cake is eaten at almost every function that I have been to, especially a birthday party.
