Forbes released its World’s Most Powerful Women List. Coming in at number 11 is twenty-five year old Lady Gaga, while her fellow entertainer, twenty-nine year old Beyonce Knowles landed the 18th spot. The following link gives the entire list.
Is it really that important who is or isn't on a list put out by one of a gazillion magazines? As to whether a singer 'belongs' on this list or not.....if Forbes thinks so, then so be it. Forbes' goal is to attract enough attention by whatever means possible, in order to maximize sales. If one looks at a magazine list such as this and entertains the notion that compiling such a list is a public service undertaken by the periodical with a cool eye toward truly measuring "power", then one may need to consider a study of economic incentives. On a lighter note, at least the young singers and business people have demonstrated some kind of talent other than getting elected to a government job.
Samisha S-67 I have been singing all of my life, and I look up to many entertainers. I think young singers belong in the company of renowned world leaders in business and politics. It is not easy to be an entertainer. It takes a lot of dedication and training to get on Beyonce and Lady Gaga's level. They are role models and influence many people everyday. They can be heard before some of the other leaders. They can reach the younger and older audience. I believe they belong on the list.
I do not see any reason as to why these singers do not belong on Forbes' list. These women are leaders in their own way. They work hard to entertain us and they also give back to the community with different charity events and organizations. Society views being wealthy as having power. With money, just about anything is possible. Some people say money equals power.
That is exactly my point. Noted singers like Beyonce and Lady Gaga definitely belong on the list. They are entertainers who are in the public eye so they have set a good example for their aundiences.
I agree with you. People never really notice the good things that artist do. It seems like they only recognize the negative. They do and go through just as much as the other leaders.

Forbes is a well known list all over America. However, concerning singers or entertainers for that matter, business is business. The category under the business falls I do not think matters. Sometimes I do think that entertainers get more credit than the world leaders. On the other hand, like I said, business is business. If people are going to work hard at what they do to reach and teach around the country or world and succeed then they should be recognized.
I am also a singer/musician. It takes hard work. So many hours go into practice, and performances. Some times people do not realize how much work it really is.
Yes, I believe they do. These ladies have worked really hard at successing in the music business. Not everybody has the talent of singing and performing as well as these ladies have done. However even though they have a geat talent in singing, they probably do not have the talent of being a business woman and managinf their money. On the other hand these ladies can make enough money to hire others to handle their money and make their singing business grow.
Latanya K-95 Yes these two young ladies deserve to be featured in Forbes. As much as i'm not a fan of Lady Gaga, I respect her hardwork, Beyonce as well and not just because she's family. These ladies are not rich and famous,they have such an enormous influence in countries ans nations. Beyonce recently got over 8,000 plus tweets per second on twitter when she revealed her baby bumped that put an end to pregancy rumors that have circulated for years at the Video Music Awards. She was also asked to sing for our nations first African American President at the First Inagrual dance. Lady Ga ga presence is so massive, that she was banned from China because the Ministry believed that her lyrics and image would send a subliminal message to their youth. Music is the universal language that contuines to exceed its limitations and most of all it brings people together. I remember their were rumors that at one point more people had called in their votes to american idol than to the presidential race. To even compare is staggering! These two ladies have followers all over the world and when they talk or perform, people stop and listen. They've earned the right to be featured in the Forbes Most Powerful Women's list.

There's no denying how powerful Lady Gaga is, or Beyonce for that matter. Gaga is a household name! So many young people look up to celebrities, that's just the way our culture works. I noticed the CEO of Kraft foods is #10 on the list. How is her success different from Gaga's? Both Irene Rosenfeld (Kraft foods) and Lady Gaga both found a way to become filthy rich in an unconventional manner. I say more power to them!
I could not agree more! Our very own culture consists of the people who make these women powerful- without fans willing to spend their money, Gaga and Beyonce would be nothing. These women saw a market for their individual talents, and here they are now making BANK. As I said in my original post... More power to them!
Rachel A. 69 I do believe that people like Beyonce and other singers deserve to be named on Forbes most powerful women's list. I believe that people like Beyonce do more then just sing. They are real people that teach us lessons in life, and just because they are not the president of the United States doesn't mean they do not influence our lives.
I believe the singers belong on this list simply because their music, whether they wrote the songs or not, speaks to the people of our world. Most people do not read anymore, instead they listen to music on the radio, on their ipods and mp3 players, at clubs, and even on television shows. Most people these days turn to music for any mood that they are in, because of this these female singers belong there. People will follow what is said in a song and what is shown in the music video. The singers of this world have control over at a vast majority of our population. Although these women may come and go it is there words that keep people going or help people to end it all.
Rachel A-69 in response to EricaD. I do agree with you when you say that these ladies can sing, and have worked very hard to make a successful life for themselves and their families. I think it is a little harsh to say that they might not be successful business women, or know how to manage their money. I can't personally say anything about that situation,however; what I know of Beyonce I bet she can handle her money just fine. Yes, they may have someone else handle it for them, but I think she has been a very successful business woman, and created an empire for herself.
Melanie is in my opinion correct in her statement. It doesn't matter who these people are. It matters that they have become a household name that everyone knows and is a part of many peoples lives. Like she said Irene Rosenfeld the CEO of KRAFT has made her way there, quite possibly only because she is a women in a high position at a company that makes the macaroni that many women feed their children on a weekly basis.
Kayla W - 69 Forbes is a magazine on business and I can not think of a more influentual business then the entertainment business. Young singers like Lady Gaga and Beyonce work really hard to get where they are now. This list is for Influentual Women, doesnt say the exact field or business they should be in. Futhermore, Lady Gaga has many fans, "monsters", who look up to her. She stands up to what she believes in and people listen. She has worked with many non-profit organizations and has encouraged others to do the same. These are the definition of an influentual person, no matter what business field she is in. with the many women in the entertainment business who should not be looked up to, it's refreshing to see singers standing up and making a differnce much like Lady Gaga and Beyonce.

When Forbes does list like this, I wish they would put the overpaid entertainers on a separate list. Lady Gaga is exceptionally talented, whereas Beyonce has a beautiful voice. The problem I have with entertainers being so influential, is they become engulfed in a world of their own. They all think they worked so hard to get to where they are. They did work hard, but they are so young and lack life experience. There are other women who worked HARD to get the spot on Forbe's list, one of them being Oprah Winfrey. Think about an overweight black woman putting herself out there, in the 80's. That is a woman that worked harder than Lady Gaga or Beyonce could ever imagine.
Porsha P-44 I think the successful singers belong in the group with the reowned leaders in business and politics. Each of these women found a way to fulfill their dreams. They all had ambition. They all have a story of hardwork and determination. We have free will to try and have the career we want. Entertainers and politicians are all valuable in this society.

I have to disagree that "overpaid entertainers" should be put on a separate list....these folks do have a lot of influence, and that's what the list is about.....as to being 'overpaid', entertainers cannot force anyone to purchase their wares, so what's the problem with making as much money as they can? Yes, they become "engulfed in a world of their own"......but then, might that also be the case with a heckuva lot of the "public servants" on the list?
I disagree with comment of lacking life experience. Everybody goes thru there on trials and tribulations. I am pretty sure Beyonce can give advice to Oprah in some areas in her life. A person in there lates 20s can have more wisdom than somebody 50 years of age. Beyonce and Oprah can both enlighten people to live there dreams.
MaryO-70 I don't think just because Lady Gaga and Beyonce are representatives of the Pop culture it makes them any less influential in our society.Both these woman are talented and have worked hard to have successful careers. Because of their popularity it carries over into other areas rather than just music or movies. they are looked up to and people may even idolize them, therefore their opinions and ideas about politics and the state of our country are revered. Albeit, perhaps a sad commentary on who does influence the population, especially the younger age groups. You can see by watching the news that movie stars and Lady Gaga are promoting their personal beliefs and adgendas especially in the realm of politics in this country. I do believe a great number of individuals would rather listen to Lady Gaga rather than someone who may have better credentials in politics and economics. I believe Samisha's comment is correct. In today's society singers have a great influence on the population through the lyrics in music and through the individuals personal beliefs, whether that is politic, religion, sexual orientation,etc. The society looks up to these pop icons and places a great deal of faith into them.
HERB-67 Yes, all of these individuals belong on this list. They have demonstrated their ability to make money for the corporations that manage them, whether it's the record company or the corporations called the United States, Russia, Germany, etc.
HERB-67 @MarkS72, Once you remove the glitz, glamour and scandal, the entertainment industry is no different than any other capitalistic enterprise; they exist to keep the bottom line in the black by constantly releasing new product. Some of these people may be artists, some of them may not. It doesn't matter. What drives the biz is the ability to put butts in seats and generate a profit through ancillary markets like CD sales, digital downloads, fashion merchandise and high visibility on the talk and print circuit.
Since they are entertainers and can reach a worldwide fan base, they are considered influential in the lives of others as the world’s political and business leaders are. Their aim is to lead others and not follow. This is why most women mimic their ways. While others could care less that Lady Gaga and Beyoncé was named by Forbes as number 11 and 18 among their list of the World's Most Powerful Women. Therefore, list like this only proves that they are just as a part of today's worldwide political and business sectors as world leaders are. Thus, there is really no difference between the two.
I believe that singers are entertainers, but they also hold the status of role models. Rather we like it or not most young people do look up to figures such as lady gaga and she sends a good message in a creative way. Young people and older people are influenced by the world wide stars sending messages such as "girls run the world" and "baby I was born this way". They do belong in the same line of leaders.
In response to HERB-67 I agree that they are in the lime light and their opinions are heard all over the world just like those political leaders who also influence other. So they should be recognized for it.
shereseb70 While reading and looking at what people may call the most prestige or elite group, I thought why couldn't someone young be among these people. I do understand that Angela Merkel deals with the economy of Europe and has proably studied many years and recieved many degrees. Hilary has great experiences, Michell Obama has walked graciously through the line of fire and Dilma Rousseff has acheived what some women in America desire to be the President. Now my point is a degree does not make you benefical to society but a true heart of positive action. Although experiences will help one to become strong and powerful each individual has had their experiences which will qualifiy them for different things. With that being said if these you ladies which range from ages 25 and Beyonce being 29 is giving a positive output and being positive influence in the lives of others why can't they be apart of this elite group. My case for this the Pharisees thought they where of the most elite group and women could never be apart of them,nor could what they call the common man never realizing that one greater than them where among them. Sometimes it's not the degree or the office you hold that brings you to a place of being renowned, whether CEO,COO,Televison commentator, ect.,but humility brings strength and working to help make a change in the lives of others makes a difference. I only studied a little bit on Lady Gaga and Beyonce but if we begin to limit our young people now we will bound ourselves later. Singers and dancers carry more power than we realize our children and even many adults are attentive to what singers say, wear, and they watch their behavior, if it is postive let them rise and shine.

Whether they are singers or not it dosen't matter, it really shouldn't be a big deal. Beyounce' is a good person and does a lot for the younger generation, in fact she is my daughter idol so I think she is a singer that deserve to be on any magazines list. Therefore I think any woman that sends positive energy deserves to be on the World's Most powerful Woman's List.

I believe that these women belong on this list just as much as these corporate women do. They have a great impact on our world today. I also believe that numerous amount of people admire these women and they are constantly in the public eye. They basically showing their fans that anything is possible with hard work and dedication and making it on that list is icing on the cake. Herb-67, I agree with you completely. The entertainment industry is a marketing strategy. If there wasn't serious money involved, then there would not be so many who have the desire to be an actor or singer. The people who make the real money are the one's behind the scenes, scheming the next controversy. Does that make Beyonce or Lady Gaga influential at that point?
In response to Olivia J.B. 69, I must say that Beyonce and Lady Gaga may have worked hard to get to where they are, but they do not completely understand what hard work is. Both were supported by their parents while reaching their stardom, and therefore have not been on their own until they were very wealthy. They may both be very wise, but it's bothersome to me that they are so influential in society.
These woman are all either really wealthy, powerful, or icons to the world. With that said, I believe that these young entertainers do belong on this list. They have an affect on people with either how they preform or how they are as an individual. Think about it, these people have followers and the people following them are usually the younger crowds, that act, dress, and want to be them. It all revolves around the influence they have on the world and how they're perceived in life.
I would say that Beyonce and Lady Gaga are popular females of the world. Their ages should have nothing do with there success. These women have worked just as hard to become as successful as the older entrepenuers. They are both extremely talented individuals not only as entertainers.
well the title is most powerful women and what is pwer really? i think it means how effective you are in evoking change (...to how you see things and hopefull for the better). Both of these ladies all tho young have worked hard at their craft and work to make people believe in the same values as the other women on the list, that women are important, their voices should be heard, dont be ashamed of who you are because of what other people say, and more. If anything ability to relate in ways that people young or old can relate to and are interested in hearing make them more accessable to sharing there thoughts. as a young person who cares about the world and our well being i will admit i didnt know who the president of venezula was or alot of other people but im sure people in venezula know who gaga and beyonce are. its just the reality. Im sure all the schooling and harsh political journies others went through seem more important but its not fair to leave the artist out when they cant really be compared. If every leader was the same the world would be a duuuuuuuuuuull place.
Pop culture ideals do get a lot of attention & some are very active in charities and giving back to there communities, however I don't think that they are as powerful or influential as say Michelle Bachelet or Greta Van Susteren. Celebrities do have a lot of money and money to some does equal power, I guess it really depends on how you define power. Forbes list is just one man's opinion, if they are on the list or not on the list doesn't really matter. I personally feel as though they are all influential, but just in different ways.

Since Beyonce and Lady Gaga are appearing on Forbes’ “World’s Most Powerful Women” list, they should absolutely be there. The influence and acclaim these women hold has been given to them by the public at large. The ‘Power’ they yield is undeniable, and though we may not all agree with the millions of fans that think they are awesome, their music reaches far and wide. The criterion to make that list most likely includes the impact the person has on the world, and the scope of their influence. The fact of the matter is that these two entertainers have met those criterions many times over (through philanthropy, the messages in their music, the issues for which they advocate, etc.). Their art is their business and they are renowned in their field of expertise (entertainment), on that basis they can contend with renowned world leaders in business and politics. To an extent we can say that they provide a necessary commodity that is as important as some businesses, and as significant as politics.
I agree with what you are saying Rob, you hit the nail on the head with her strategy for becoming famous. The sad thing is that we are the ones that make them into the superstar they become. We let our children idolize them and some of us are even worse than children; as you said we are deluded by the illusion and seem to be waiting to see how much further she would go, what will she do next, so we keep buying the music, going to the concerts and looking for every opportunity to see what will be the next outrageous thing she would do. In the meantime we are making them richer and more powerful. Forbes did not put them on that list, we did.

Each one of them had to work hard to get to where they are in the world today. I dont think that had it any easier to get to where they are than the worlds leaders in business and politics.

Wow. I guess I have to put forth a pretty great argument since I do not agree with anyone on here. I do not believe these ladies should be on the list at all. I think it is two very different things and they do not compare or relate to one another. The Most Powerful list? That may be true but sadly, we put them there. I will agree that they are two of the most influential people of our time, but not the most powerful. Oprah Winfrey for example, should be number one on the list. She came from nothing at all and worked very hard to become who she is today. She went against the grain by becoming one of todays most powerful women during a time that women were seen as not being as successful as men and to top that...she is black. She overcame great odds. Wow. Now thats powerful. I do not agree that entertainment and business should be in the same category together. Besides, Lady Gaga made the Most Powerful Women List but I am a little confused. I think the reason why Lady GaGa made it as number 11 on this list because of the type of message that she sends out to society. She lets people (mainly kids) know that it's okay to be different. Unlike hip-hop artists her message is very positive and uplifting. I don't think that her age should matter. It's what she stands for and how she makes people feel that landed her the #11 spot on the Forbes list.

@Domenic R. 70 I don't think you can say that these 2 women lack life experiences. You don't know what they have been through to help get them to the point they are at today. Beyonce may have had some of the similar struggles that Oprah had just on a smaller scale. I don't think we have the right to say that they didn't work HARD to get to where they are.
I do not think they need to be on the same list. They both make millions of dollars as entertainers but they are not "business women". Do you think they run around with a check book and go Krogering? No, because they have 20 other people that can do that for them. Beyonce is a lot classier than Lady Gaga and I'm sure they help out charities, they should with all the money they have. But what else do they do besides sing? Do you think Lady Gaga would show up at a political event for your town? What on earth would she talk about. I feel there is a definite difference between successful business women and women that have been successful entertaining.
I don't have a problem with them being on this list and the fact that they are young or are singers shouldn't define them as being powerful or not. I personally don't know much about their singing abilities other than listening to a few songs. I do know that history has shown that entertainers come and go and very few have had lasting influences on the world; such as the Beatles, Michael Jackson and Elvis. Whether Lady Gaga or Beyonce will have this same effect will have to be tested over time. The magazine simply made a list of powerful woman and I believe that both of these woman are powerful. They are millionaires and with money comes power.
Comment to MarkS - I totally agree with you on the fact that this is just one magazines opinion and it really doesn't matter what they say or think about who is or who isn't powerful. None of the people listed on their "list" have any power of me, so I could care less.
Lady Gaga and Beyonce are not only entertainers but business women also. They use the influence they have not to only help themselves but others also. They have charities they work with and use their influence with these charities. The younger generation look up to these entertainers. As long as they are a good influence I thing they should be able to. Forbes only list the ones that deserve it through their actions.
I think politics and singers fit into different catergories so I don't think we can classify them in the same type of power. Both politicains and singers may have worked hard to get to where they are now ,but the influences they have on people I think are vastly different. Both groups contribute to society and display power in there own unique way. As people we are influenced by our culture and what we surround ourselves with, so I think a better question to ask is what message are they sending out to the people following them.

I had a very hard time with this question. When I think of powerful I think of people of have conquered nations, people who have been responsible for running the military. After really thinking about it I guess entertainers should be on this list. Unfortunately the entertainment business has the power to reach millions. People all over the world look up and aspire to be like these people. Entertainers have the ability to have a very positive impact on all ages, but they also have the power to be a bad influence on people. I wish some of the entertainers today took their position and influence more seriously.

Yes, I do believe that Lady Gaga and Beyonce should absolutely be included in this class. They are world leaders just as much as a politican or a business leader. They have a following that is just as important, if not more and that is why businesses pay them large amounts of money to be a representative of their products. We to often view leaders as people that are making a difference in people lives from the financial perspective and unfortunately that's pretty much the world we live in today. On the other hand most musicians, especially Lady Gaga is all about acceptance. In todays world, we lack so much of that from our leaders and that is the main reason why they definately belong in this high power group of people. I just think that it is awesome that they are able to huge sums of money from other opportunities outside of their music.

In my opinion they are more influential because they are reaching more people all over the world. It doesnt matter how smart you are or not, if you as a singer can get your message across to a wider audience versus a very smart person to a smaller audience, the latter will lose everytime.
MichaelS 69 I absolutely believe that these young women singers belong in the powerful company of world leaders. All types of music are available to most people 24 hours a day. The powerful effect of this music has quite an influence on our younger generation. These women are impacting the younger generation more than any powerful political leaders. Thus, they rightfully belong to this list of renowned world leaders.

It really depends on how the magazine defines power. If they define it as being wealthy and having a lot of influence, then both singers deserve to be on that list. They are both leaders in the music industry, which in itself is a great and almost impossible accomplishment, and they finance and run other businesses on the side. They also have the ability to influence many, many people. For instance, if Lady Gaga said that she supports PETA and that people should donate money to their cause, a certain percentage of her fans will donate the money just because she said so.
David G. It is hard to admit that a 'Lady GaGa' could be powerful. Unfortunately, she(?)is. We can take some comfort in knowing that she will fade from memory quite soon. The role of singers, actors/actresses fifty years ago have drastically changed from what we know it to be today. This is amplified by technology and the world wide access availability. These two ladies along with numerous others have made lots of money, connections, and hold a great deal of influence with many people worldwide. They have accomplished this not only from their talent but also what they represent as a person. To be in showbiz now a days you are giving your whole self to the public and your work.
I examined the list and it seemed a little out there. They need to be more specific as to what "powerful" means. Lady Gaga may have influences in pop culture, but how does she beat out a woman like Oprah? You can't compare the two. Many of the women on the list were people I've never even heard of, like the CEO of Xerox? How did she rank so high?

The Forbes brand represents earned wealth and power through means of economic status. While the title reads,"Most Powerful Women", the power is on basis through net worth and power through monetary potential. I am a lover of arts on all levels, from poets and painters to musicians of all genres. With that being said, I find appreciation in the fact that Forbes would not snub these women who have certainly earned their position on the list, merely because of what they do for their money. Does a politician or genius scientist deserve more recognition than a singer? I think not. This is yet another reflection of the times we are living in and what our culture appreciates. Now, if there were an individual like Heidi Fleiss on the list, I would not welcome such diversity. LOL! Quoting the lyrics of the spot eighteen woman, Beyonce,"Who run the world...girls"!
While I agree that there are several other women on the list who have contributed to the world in ways of more substance and historical meaning, we cannot shun or frown upon the fact that Lady Gaga and Beyonce are singers. I look at some women who are on the list based on their family name versus their own person accolades and accomplishments. I think people may have a bias because they are not fans of either artist's music. We must not forget the basis and purpose of Forbes' list is financial earnings. If we get technical, we have to look beyond the performers jobs and appreciate what "purpose" they have served beyond the music industries. Whether is be inspiring an teenager to not commit suicide through a song lyric or providing several individual with a home or scholarship for a high Education, musicians serve a purpose just as meaningful.

After reviewing the people they have choose it appears as though they chose each person because of their achievements and their influence that they have on others.When you can speak and have a multitude of people follow you that is powerful. Weather it is positive or negative. Here we are looking at the positive so I truly believe that you do not have to be in your 40's or in your 80's or prehaps dead to be acknowledged for being in the top 100 most powerful women. I personally don't buy into magazine articles like this, but obviously there is a market for it or it wouldn't be around. I don't know many of the top 100 women on the list, and many of them I don't like. Does that mean they shouldn't be on the list? Forbes can put whatever they want on their list, it doesn't matter to me. I would never let Lady GaGa be a "role model" for my kids though either.

Before I give my opinion about the list, I want to disclose my position about women. I‘m the only man in a household of five and I consider myself blessed by that fact. I’m also a man that for many years was the only male in the working place. I consider myself a women’s advocate in a world that still maintains a glass ceiling over them. Against all odds women around the world keep performing at an exceptional rate that in many instances outshine those that, in vain, attempt to suffocate their dreams. However, it’s troublesome to see how women that definitely have talent, choose to live in such outrageous ways to become, famous, wealthy and popular,
In my opinion, many of us still trapped in the popularity cliché of the high school years. Our perspective of live must change and, we as adults have the duty of raising a strong generation capable of distinguish between good and evil, moral and wicked, right and wrong. Today just like fifty years ago, kids like whatever the other kids like just because their need to be part of the nonmaterial culture that surrounds them. The responsibility rest on us adults, to guide them during those formative years and make clear for them that popularity and power means nothing if not funnel in the right direction.
If power without substance and popularity without consideration for the negative impact to society where recognized by Forbes magazine, obviously the list makes sense.
It's so refreshing to see someone called it the way it is. In my opinion, an entertainer should never become a role model for any kid. My daughters don't have to look far to find a role model, their mother is right here. It makes me sad when I see so many kids looking up to people that, in their own ignorance can't see how damaging their actions are to those kids.

It is our responsibility to help them understand that these entertainers could either do good or bad for society with their "powerful" status. In my opinion It's not about what they do, its about how hard they worked to get where they are, and how their power is effecting other people. Just as these bussiness leaders and politics can control the children of worlds future through schooling and other more practical ways, singers still have a major effect on their lives aswell. Not only children, but adults immitate/aspire to be them. Lady GaGa, and Beyonce Knowles have more power than people give them credit for, they they worked extremely hard to get it, just as the world leaders worked hard to get theirs. I believe the issue is more of a physical vs mental debate rather than a singer vs politician. Singers get their job through both physical and mental anguish, but the fact that most of it is physical, makes their job seem less powerful/important.

In my opinion it is sad that these two ladies have been thought of being powerful. If powerful means being influential I guess they do belong in this list as powerful women.They do have a lot of influence on people. There is no doubt they are "powerful". It is sad however that many people idolize them. As a mother I would hate to have my children idolize Lady Gaga or Beyonce. I, myself, am a musician as well but i do not look up to these ladies. I don't see why these amazing entertainers should not be on this list. I personally love them both and these women are in fact leaders. The correct definition of a leader is "A person who leads a group, organization, or country" and these women definitely are being looked up to by the youth, adults, and even other leaders too. It is not that they are only entertainers, but it is about the hard work, dedication, and strength these women put into being the entertainers they are today. I think it's relative to what one would consider "powerful". When i hear the word powerful what comes to mind is one having the ability to change laws (political leaders) or having the power to lay off a vast amount of people or hire a lot of people (CEO's) which both examples have the ability to affect a lot of aspects of peoples lives. Music entertainers and movie stars or super models have the ability to make a lot of money...to me the only have the "power" to buy expensive things. They can't change laws, or give people jobs (aside from hiring people to work for you directly) or affect a majority of people like the decisions that are made by politicians and CEO's. I do not think that musicians should be mixed among these political and financial moguls.

I like your point of view. This is a list of "Forbes" most powerful women. They didn't give the requirements to make this list, which would have helped a little. They compiled a list of 100 wealthy women and put them in the order that they saw fit. Just because its Forbes list, doesn't make it true. It's just want they deemed "powerful" in order to create a more compelling list to help sales.

I think that if these young singers have something that sets them apart from the rest of the entertainment industry and it is something that is valuable, then yes. I know that both of them have given countless interviews and Lady Gaga has inspired so many people to be themselves. People look up to them because at one point in their lives they were normal people too and they too may have endured hardships and they can speak out and empower others who have been through similar situations. They are powerful because they do empower people and they obviously have money- two qualities that everyone on this list has.
I completely agree with you! This is "Forbes" and like I said everyone on this list has some kind of money. It would be completely different if this was a list compiled by someone who was basing things on a list of requirements that had to be met. This isn't the Nobel Peace Prize nominations- it's a company who likes to expose wealth in people and businesses alike.

I have been a performer since the age of 4 and I absolutely believe in the power of influence of an entertainer. Personally, Lady Gaga is a little strange and I can understand how some people may question her ability to be a "role model" especially for young girls, however, she definitely has had an INFLUENCE on our culture and music. Beyonce on the other hand is an INCREDIBLE woman. One who I hold in high regard along with other women that I respect and look up to in the world of politics, sports, religion and so on. Then you've been influenced, touched, moved and allowed your heart to be exposed to an entertainer/celebrity. If Michelle Obama were a singer or Beyonce were a politician I would still say the same thing. Whether you are in the political lime light or the entertaining spotlight...IT IS THE SAME! You still hold the power of influence, whether it is good or bad in your hands. You can also get an education, yes, and get your degree and become a doctor or nurse or teacher and influence the lives of many but the likelihood of it being worldwide is very small. They have influenced multiple generations and are known internationally. This also goes hand in hand with prestige. Forbes magazine is a business. If you looking at Lady Gaga and Beyonce successes in the business aspect, then they should be on the list. Personally, I think it should be two separate lists because I don't see them being "Most Powerful". They are very influential in today's music but there are others on that list that are powerful not necessarily in terms of money. Forbes defines power as having wealth and money.
I believe that the younger singers should be in the company of renowned business because they work as hard as any adult in the entertainer business. Just like you have legend like Diana Ross to Whitney Houston who are popular icon in the younger generation days. Personally, I feel that the whole celebrity phenomenon is ridiculous. It seems that a large portion of society has become obsessed with following the lives of people they have never met. Amazingly, while never having a personal relation to most fans, these "stars" are having a HUGE impact on our culture. I don't get it. It is undeniable the amount of influence these artists have on the masses.. but is it right? Not at all. I understand the tremendous amount of effort it takes to make it to the top level of the entertainment industry, but this should not make these celebrities influential in any way. Sure, they work tremendously hard and love what they do.. But that also goes for firemen, police officers, soldiers, farmers, etc.. Why isn't there an awards show for returning soldiers from overseas? Why are firemen and police officers making less than $40,000 annually while the Jersey Shore cast makes $400,000 each per season?(yes really, look it up) It's nonsense. Male or Female, celebrities should not be among this society's most powerful or influential, they've done nothing to deserve that right.
Sometimes I am amazed of how the words successful or powerful may be defined in the society that we live in. As a women who migrated to this country close to a couple of decades ago, as a woman who has seen with my own eyes(not through a news cast) woman being treated like a sub-human, and as a woman who does not watch TV and who knows nothing about the entertaintment world, I have a hard time understanding why lady Gaga and Beyonce belong in this list. I would like to believe that these women that appear in this list should aspire girls and young women to want to be like them. I have a fourteen year old daughter who enjoys their music as any teenager would ,but at the same time, understands that they are people whose job is to entertain. I hardly believe that the images of half-naked women, women degrading themselves and women who use their bodies and their sexuality as a comodity are people who should unspire anyone. Do they have lot of fans that adore them? I am sure they do, but just because the entertaintment industry has made millions promoting their image,and making sure that they are filthy rich, that doesnt really qualify them for such honors. Oprah is an entertainer. But she changed the industry that she work for... it went from being a place where you just saw the most patheric cases of our society to where you could hear inteligent, stimulating conversation. Not only that, the oprah factor, that is amazing how that woman can turn a product that we know nothing about into a total success. Above all this, she is not afraid to speak against injustice, to get involve in social political discussions, and she believes in helping the less fortunate by donating millions of dollars to help others, and for that, she is someone deserving of such honor.
I think power is given by the people. You can never have power if you have nobody following you or supporting you in what you are doing. However it seems as though they are because of how many "followers" they have in the world. They have much fame and popularity. I think that they should be viewed as influential leaders. A lot of singers are not just singers. A lot of singers go on to start up businesses and become business mogals like Sean Puffy Combs , He created Sean Jean. J-z created roca wear. Alot of other singers creates their own fragrances and alot of other things!

I agree these women are talented, successful, and great business women, however, positive role models I do not think they are. Yes, half-nude videos do sell and so does cross dressing and wearing bra and panties on stage in front of thousands. I do not see how that is a positive message to the young. MauriceR In actuality, today’s generation of entertainers see themselves as a brand or corporation—much like Apple, Nike, Kellogg, GM, Forbes, etc. Therefore, young singers belong in the company of renowned world leaders in business and politics. For example, whenever Lady Gaga’s and Byonce’s names are mentioned there are some global values placed or associated with solely the names—not to mention their image. Their name or star power can affect social change or even incite war.
With money and fame (or infamy) comes power. Lady Gaga and Beyonce did not buy or inherit their power like most world leaders, politician or business people. Like any successful corporation, these singers’ power come from years of marketing, talent, hard work, and millions of fans who give them approval and admiration.
Ironically, the same can be said for most successful politician or business people. The only difference respectively is that these fans are voters, consumers, investors, family or employees.

Is it really that important who is or isn't on a list put out by one of a gazillion magazines? As to whether a singer 'belongs' on this list or not.....if Forbes thinks so, then so be it. Forbes' goal is to attract enough attention by whatever means possible, in order to maximize sales. If one looks at a magazine list such as this and entertains the notion that compiling such a list is a public service undertaken by the periodical with a cool eye toward truly measuring "power", then one may need to consider a study of economic incentives. On a lighter note, at least the young singers and business people have demonstrated some kind of talent other than getting elected to a government job.

It is not easy to be an entertainer. It takes a lot of dedication and training to get on Beyonce and Lady Gaga's level. They are role models and influence many people everyday. They can be heard before some of the other leaders. They can reach the younger and older audience. I believe they belong on the list.

Forbes is a well known list all over America. However, concerning singers or entertainers for that matter, business is business. The category under the business falls I do not think matters. Sometimes I do think that entertainers get more credit than the world leaders. On the other hand, like I said, business is business. If people are going to work hard at what they do to reach and teach around the country or world and succeed then they should be recognized.

These ladies are not rich and famous,they have such an enormous influence in countries ans nations. Beyonce recently got over 8,000 plus tweets per second on twitter when she revealed her baby bumped that put an end to pregancy rumors that have circulated for years at the Video Music Awards. She was also asked to sing for our nations first African American President at the First Inagrual dance. Lady Ga ga presence is so massive, that she was banned from China because the Ministry believed that her lyrics and image would send a subliminal message to their youth. Music is the universal language that contuines to exceed its limitations and most of all it brings people together. I remember their were rumors that at one point more people had called in their votes to american idol than to the presidential race. To even compare is staggering! These two ladies have followers all over the world and when they talk or perform, people stop and listen. They've earned the right to be featured in the Forbes Most Powerful Women's list.

I noticed the CEO of Kraft foods is #10 on the list. How is her success different from Gaga's? Most people do not read anymore, instead they listen to music on the radio, on their ipods and mp3 players, at clubs, and even on television shows. Most people these days turn to music for any mood that they are in, because of this these female singers belong there. People will follow what is said in a song and what is shown in the music video. The problem I have with entertainers being so influential, is they become engulfed in a world of their own. They all think they worked so hard to get to where they are. They did work hard, but they are so young and lack life experience. There are other women who worked HARD to get the spot on Forbe's list, one of them being Oprah Winfrey. Think about an overweight black woman putting herself out there, in the 80's. That is a woman that worked harder than Lady Gaga or Beyonce could ever imagine.

Because of their popularity it carries over into other areas rather than just music or movies. they are looked up to and people may even idolize them, therefore their opinions and ideas about politics and the state of our country are revered. Albeit, perhaps a sad commentary on who does influence the population, especially the younger age groups. You can see by watching the news that movie stars and Lady Gaga are promoting their personal beliefs and adgendas especially in the realm of politics in this country. I do believe a great number of individuals would rather listen to Lady Gaga rather than someone who may have better credentials in politics and economics. ReplyDeleteWhile reading and looking at what people may call the most prestige or elite group, I thought why couldn't someone young be among these people. I do understand that Angela Merkel deals with the economy of Europe and has proably studied many years and recieved many degrees. Hilary has great experiences, Michell Obama has walked graciously through the line of fire and Dilma Rousseff has acheived what some women in America desire to be the President. Now my point is a degree does not make you benefical to society but a true heart of positive action. Although experiences will help one to become strong and powerful each individual has had their experiences which will qualifiy them for different things. With that being said if these you ladies which range from ages 25 and Beyonce being 29 is giving a positive output and being positive influence in the lives of others why can't they be apart of this elite group. My case for this the Pharisees thought they where of the most elite group and women could never be apart of them,nor could what they call the common man never realizing that one greater than them where among them. Sometimes it's not the degree or the office you hold that brings you to a place of being renowned, whether CEO,COO,Televison commentator, ect.,but humility brings strength and working to help make a change in the lives of others makes a difference. I only studied a little bit on Lady Gaga and Beyonce but if we begin to limit our young people now we will bound ourselves later. If there wasn't serious money involved, then there would not be so many who have the desire to be an actor or singer. In response to Olivia J.B. 69, I must say that Beyonce and Lady Gaga may have worked hard to get to where they are, but they do not completely understand what hard work is. Both were supported by their parents while reaching their stardom, and therefore have not been on their own until they were very wealthy. They may both be very wise, but it's bothersome to me that they are so influential in society.
These woman are all either really wealthy, powerful, or icons to the world. With that said, I believe that these young entertainers do belong on this list. They have an affect on people with either how they preform or how they are as an individual. Think about it, these people have followers and the people following them are usually the younger crowds, that act, dress, and want to be them. Celebrities do have a lot of money and money to some does equal power, I guess it really depends on how you define power. Forbes list is just one man's opinion, if they are on the list or not on the list doesn't really matter. I personally feel as though they are all influential, but just in different ways.

The influence and acclaim these women hold has been given to them by the public at large. The ‘Power’ they yield is undeniable, and though we may not all agree with the millions of fans that think they are awesome, their music reaches far and wide. The criterion to make that list most likely includes the impact the person has on the world, and the scope of their influence. The fact of the matter is that these two entertainers have met those criterions many times over (through philanthropy, the messages in their music, the issues for which they advocate, etc.). Their art is their business and they are renowned in their field of expertise (entertainment), on that basis they can contend with renowned world leaders in business and politics. To an extent we can say that they provide a necessary commodity that is as important as some businesses, and as significant as politics.

The sad thing is that we are the ones that make them into the superstar they become. We let our children idolize them and some of us are even worse than children; as you said we are deluded by the illusion and seem to be waiting to see how much further she would go, what will she do next, so we keep buying the music, going to the concerts and looking for every opportunity to see what will be the next outrageous thing she would do. I think it is two very different things and they do not compare or relate to one another. The Most Powerful list? That may be true but sadly, we put them there. I will agree that they are two of the most influential people of our time, but not the most powerful. Oprah Winfrey for example, should be number one on the list. She came from nothing at all and worked very hard to become who she is today. She went against the grain by becoming one of todays most powerful women during a time that women were seen as not being as successful as men and to top that...she is black. She overcame great odds. I don't think you can say that these 2 women lack life experiences. You don't know what they have been through to help get them to the point they are at today. They both make millions of dollars as entertainers but they are not "business women". Do you think they run around with a check book and go Krogering? No, because they have 20 other people that can do that for them. Beyonce is a lot classier than Lady Gaga and I'm sure they help out charities, they should with all the money they have. But what else do they do besides sing? Do you think Lady Gaga would show up at a political event for your town? What on earth would she talk about. I don't have a problem with them being on this list and the fact that they are young or are singers shouldn't define them as being powerful or not. I personally don't know much about their singing abilities other than listening to a few songs. I do know that history has shown that entertainers come and go and very few have had lasting influences on the world; such as the Beatles, Michael Jackson and Elvis. Whether Lady Gaga or Beyonce will have this same effect will have to be tested over time. The magazine simply made a list of powerful woman and I believe that both of these woman are powerful. They are millionaires and with money comes power.

Lady Gaga and Beyonce are not only entertainers but business women also. They use the influence they have not to only help themselves but others also. They have charities they work with and use their influence with these charities. The younger generation look up to these entertainers. As long as they are a good influence I thing they should be able to. Forbes only list the ones that deserve it through their actions.

ReplyDeleteI think politics and singers fit into different catergories so I don't think we can classify them in the same type of power. Both politicains and singers may have worked hard to get to where they are now ,but the influences they have on people I think are vastly different. Both groups contribute to society and display power in there own unique way. As people we are influenced by our culture and what we surround ourselves with, so I think a better question to ask is what message are they sending out to the people following them.

After really thinking about it I guess entertainers should be on this list. Unfortunately the entertainment business has the power to reach millions. ReplyDeleteYes, I do believe that Lady Gaga and Beyonce should absolutely be included in this class. They are world leaders just as much as a politican or a business leader. They have a following that is just as important, if not more and that is why businesses pay them large amounts of money to be a representative of their products. We to often view leaders as people that are making a difference in people lives from the financial perspective and unfortunately that's pretty much the world we live in today. On the other hand most musicians, especially Lady Gaga is all about acceptance. In todays world, we lack so much of that from our leaders and that is the main reason why they definately belong in this high power group of people. I just think that it is awesome that they are able to huge sums of money from other opportunities outside of their music.

In my opinion they are more influential because they are reaching more people all over the world. ReplyDeleteIt really depends on how the magazine defines power. If they define it as being wealthy and having a lot of influence, then both singers deserve to be on that list. They are both leaders in the music industry, which in itself is a great and almost impossible accomplishment, and they finance and run other businesses on the side. They also have the ability to influence many, many people. For instance, if Lady Gaga said that she supports PETA and that people should donate money to their cause, a certain percentage of her fans will donate the money just because she said so.

The role of singers, actors/actresses fifty years ago have drastically changed from what we know it to be today. This is amplified by technology and the world wide access availability. These two ladies along with numerous others have made lots of money, connections, and hold a great deal of influence with many people worldwide. They have accomplished this not only from their talent but also what they represent as a person. To be in showbiz now a days you are giving your whole self to the public and your work.
I examined the list and it seemed a little out there. They need to be more specific as to what "powerful" means. Lady Gaga may have influences in pop culture, but how does she beat out a woman like Oprah? You can't compare the two. Many of the women on the list were people I've never even heard of, like the CEO of Xerox? How did she rank so high?

The Forbes brand represents earned wealth and power through means of economic status. While the title reads,"Most Powerful Women", the power is on basis through net worth and power through monetary potential. I am a lover of arts on all levels, from poets and painters to musicians of all genres. With that being said, I find appreciation in the fact that Forbes would not snub these women who have certainly earned their position on the list, merely because of what they do for their money. Does a politician or genius scientist deserve more recognition than a singer? I think not. This is yet another reflection of the times we are living in and what our culture appreciates. Now, if there were an individual like Heidi Fleiss on the list, I would not welcome such diversity. LOL! Quoting the lyrics of the spot eighteen woman, Beyonce,"Who run the world...girls"!
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that there are several other women on the list who have contributed to the world in ways of more substance and historical meaning, we cannot shun or frown upon the fact that Lady Gaga and Beyonce are singers. I look at some women who are on the list based on their family name versus their own person accolades and accomplishments. I think people may have a bias because they are not fans of either artist's music. We must not forget the basis and purpose of Forbes' list is financial earnings. If we get technical, we have to look beyond the performers jobs and appreciate what "purpose" they have served beyond the music industries. Whether is be inspiring an teenager to not commit suicide through a song lyric or providing several individual with a home or scholarship for a high Education, musicians serve a purpose just as meaningful.

I don't know many of the top 100 women on the list, and many of them I don't like. Does that mean they shouldn't be on the list? Forbes can put whatever they want on their list, it doesn't matter to me. I would never let Lady GaGa be a "role model" for my kids though either.

100 Most Powerful Women”, shouldn’t be a surprise to find these two names listed on the top 20.
Before I give my opinion about the list, I want to disclose my position about women. I‘m the only man in a household of five and I consider myself blessed by that fact. I’m also a man that for many years was the only male in the working place. I consider myself a women’s advocate in a world that still maintains a glass ceiling over them. Against all odds women around the world keep performing at an exceptional rate that in many instances outshine those that, in vain, attempt to suffocate their dreams. However, it’s troublesome to see how women that definitely have talent, choose to live in such outrageous ways to become, famous, wealthy and popular,
In my opinion, many of us still trapped in the popularity cliché of the high school years. Our perspective of live must change and, we as adults have the duty of raising a strong generation capable of distinguish between good and evil, moral and wicked, right and wrong. Today just like fifty years ago, kids like whatever the other kids like just because their need to be part of the nonmaterial culture that surrounds them. The responsibility rest on us adults, to guide them during those formative years and make clear for them that popularity and power means nothing if not funnel in the right direction.
If power without substance and popularity without consideration for the negative impact to society where recognized by Forbes magazine, obviously the list makes sense.

My daughters don't have to look far to find a role model, their mother is right here. In my opinion It's not about what they do, its about how hard they worked to get where they are, and how their power is effecting other people. Just as these bussiness leaders and politics can control the children of worlds future through schooling and other more practical ways, singers still have a major effect on their lives aswell. Not only children, but adults immitate/aspire to be them. Lady GaGa, and Beyonce Knowles have more power than people give them credit for, they they worked extremely hard to get it, just as the world leaders worked hard to get theirs. I believe the issue is more of a physical vs mental debate rather than a singer vs politician. Singers get their job through both physical and mental anguish, but the fact that most of it is physical, makes their job seem less powerful/important.

I don't see why these amazing entertainers should not be on this list. I personally love them both and these women are in fact leaders. The correct definition of a leader is "A person who leads a group, organization, or country" and these women definitely are being looked up to by the youth, adults, and even other leaders too. It is not that they are only entertainers, but it is about the hard work, dedication, and strength these women put into being the entertainers they are today. One may look up to Beyonce or Lady Gaga for their dedication and not necessarily their music. These women influence others in numerous amount of ways, not just one. They deserve to be on this list as well as the the many other women listed.

When i hear the word powerful what comes to mind is one having the ability to change laws (political leaders) or having the power to lay off a vast amount of people or hire a lot of people (CEO's) which both examples have the ability to affect a lot of aspects of peoples lives. Music entertainers and movie stars or super models have the ability to make a lot of money...to me the only have the "power" to buy expensive things. They can't change laws, or give people jobs (aside from hiring people to work for you directly) or affect a majority of people like the decisions that are made by politicians and CEO's. I do not think that musicians should be mixed among these political and financial moguls.

They compiled a list of 100 wealthy women and put them in the order that they saw fit. Just because its Forbes list, doesn't make it true. I know that both of them have given countless interviews and Lady Gaga has inspired so many people to be themselves. People look up to them because at one point in their lives they were normal people too and they too may have endured hardships and they can speak out and empower others who have been through similar situations. It would be completely different if this was a list compiled by someone who was basing things on a list of requirements that had to be met. Personally, Lady Gaga is a little strange and I can understand how some people may question her ability to be a "role model" especially for young girls, however, she definitely has had an INFLUENCE on our culture and music. Beyonce on the other hand is an INCREDIBLE woman. One who I hold in high regard along with other women that I respect and look up to in the world of politics, sports, religion and so on. She is a wonderful role model and one that I think represents the category of "most powerful women" well. She has used her power to do good.
I do believe that entertainers belong on this list. We see them everyday, we hear them everyday and if there is one thing that can touch ANY person, it's music.

Have you ever had a song that touched your heart? A song you ever played at a wedding, graduation, funeral? Then you've been influenced, touched, moved and allowed your heart to be exposed to an entertainer/celebrity. If Michelle Obama were a singer or Beyonce were a politician I would still say the same thing. Whether you are in the political lime light or the entertaining spotlight...IT IS THE SAME! You still hold the power of influence, whether it is good or bad in your hands. You can also get an education, yes, and get your degree and become a doctor or nurse or teacher and influence the lives of many but the likelihood of it being worldwide is very small. They have influenced multiple generations and are known internationally. This also goes hand in hand with prestige. So by defintion Lady ga-ga and Beyonce ARE powerful women.I would have to say that based on how many people their music has influenced that they should absolutely be on the list of most powerful women. In terms of Oprah Winfrie really my mom used to watch Oprah. Even with all of her money and charities she doesn't influence or have as great an effect on the population as Lady Ga-Ga or Beyonce. Just saying.

ReplyDeleteI believe that this is where the generation line is drawn, because if you ask a girl or woman under the age of thirty who she admirer or who is successful and powerful in today’s world, she might probably say she looks up to Lady Gaga and Beyonce and wish to be as successful as they are, because in the eyes of some young girls and women Lady Gaga and Beyonce are powerful and rich they command and get attention wherever they go in the world, their sit at the same table as world leaders and rub elbows with the rich and powerful. World leaders, big business and corporations knows that having Lady Gaga or Beyonce in their corner or talking about them in a negative or positive way will get today’s generation’s attention. I also believe that in some situations entertainers have more power and influences than politicians, world leaders, big business and corporations’ case in point Katrina and Haiti relief, feed the world relief and so on. If the same question was post to someone thirty and older the answer might be Oprah Winfrey, Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton, Angela Merkel, Sonia Gandhi or Michelle Obama.
Personally, I feel that the whole celebrity phenomenon is ridiculous. It seems that a large portion of society has become obsessed with following the lives of people they have never met. Amazingly, while never having a personal relation to most fans, these "stars" are having a HUGE impact on our culture. I don't get it. It is undeniable the amount of influence these artists have on the masses.. but is it right? Not at all. I understand the tremendous amount of effort it takes to make it to the top level of the entertainment industry, but this should not make these celebrities influential in any way. Sure, they work tremendously hard and love what they do.. But that also goes for firemen, police officers, soldiers, farmers, etc.. Why isn't there an awards show for returning soldiers from overseas? Why are firemen and police officers making less than $40,000 annually while the Jersey Shore cast makes $400,000 each per season?(yes really, look it up) It's nonsense. Male or Female, celebrities should not be among this society's most powerful or influential, they've done nothing to deserve that right.

ReplyDeleteSometimes I am amazed of how the words successful or powerful may be defined in the society that we live in. As a women who migrated to this country close to a couple of decades ago, as a woman who has seen with my own eyes(not through a news cast) woman being treated like a sub-human, and as a woman who does not watch TV and who knows nothing about the entertaintment world, I have a hard time understanding why lady Gaga and Beyonce belong in this list. I would like to believe that these women that appear in this list should aspire girls and young women to want to be like them. I have a fourteen year old daughter who enjoys their music as any teenager would ,but at the same time, understands that they are people whose job is to entertain. I hardly believe that the images of half-naked women, women degrading themselves and women who use their bodies and their sexuality as a comodity are people who should unspire anyone. Do they have lot of fans that adore them? I am sure they do, but just because the entertaintment industry has made millions promoting their image,and making sure that they are filthy rich, that doesnt really qualify them for such honors. Oprah is an entertainer. But she changed the industry that she work for... it went from being a place where you just saw the most patheric cases of our society to where you could hear inteligent, stimulating conversation. Not only that, the oprah factor, that is amazing how that woman can turn a product that we know nothing about into a total success. Above all this, she is not afraid to speak against injustice, to get involve in social political discussions, and she believes in helping the less fortunate by donating millions of dollars to help others, and for that, she is someone deserving of such honor.

ReplyDeleteI think power is given by the people. You can never have power if you have nobody following you or supporting you in what you are doing. So, the influence you have in them can put you among the regarded as most powerful people on earth. Young singers being in this category is determined by what they offer through their music. The way they carry themselves too and what they are fighting for. Like lady Gaga,many people like her costumes while performing and also the way she speaks out regarding the sensitive issues. So, my thinking is they should be among the company of other renowned leaders and business men because even them did not get there by themselves but through their hard work and intelligence,they were able to change people's mind hence their power.
While in a list of careers, singers and actors and actresses may not seem to automatically "compare" to politicians and other world leaders, this powerful persons list in Forbes magazine seems accurate. The goal of this list is to point out influential people in the world today. "Major" people in today's entertainment industry are very influential, internationally, through their lyrics, fashion, and other things they do. Also, more influence means more fans and more money, and more money means more power.

In response to Maria S., I agree with your point that in comparison to Oprah, some other very famous women in the entertainment industry do not deserve to be named as "most powerful." However it seems as though they are because of how many "followers" they have in the world. They have much fame and popularity. While it is very difficult to "change" the music industry, Beyonce and Lady Gaga have inspired many other people in their industry, especially Lady Gaga. While this woman seems, "odd," her eccentricity has very noticably influenced others to show their "wild and wierd" side, because it seems interesting, entertaining, and draws much attention, making them stand out. Beyonce is a woman who not only sings, but seems to have a natural stage presence, and tries to expand her horizon by acting, having merchandise, and getting involved, somewhat with the community, while remaining seemingly humble, nice, and down-to-earth in the midst of all of her fame and fortune. For these reasons and the fact that many people do not see these two specific women as having a strong negative influence and abusing their power, they seem to be two of the more respectable people in their industry, and therefore, were not overlooked for this list.

Their music present a positive image for the youth which has great messages. Through their charity work they show their humanitarian sides. They have a tremendous impact on pop culture in general.

I agree with your post 100%. I am big fans of both entertainers not just for their music but because of the positive impact that they both have of their young female audience.
I think that they should be viewed as influential leaders. A lot of singers are not just singers. A lot of singers go on to start up businesses and become business mogals like Sean Puffy Combs , He created Sean Jean. J-z created roca wear. Alot of other singers creates their own fragrances and alot of other things!

They generate enough revenue to be considered businesswoman in their own right. They also influence millions of people through their videos, tours and print ads so of course I think they should be equal to the other ladies on the list.

ReplyDeleteDana I dont think you should look at the sexual nature of these women to talk about why they dont belong on their list. Their form of entertainment should not be discounted though it may not be entertaining to you. I feel as though both women are role models for different reasons. The bold fashion statements and messages they send are subject to debate but they both make belong on the list due to the sheer nature of the empires they are trying to build with music being the avenue to do that.
Yes, these two women should be included among the worlds most influential women. While one may not agree with the lifestyle or the social awareness issues that these two million bring to the fore; one can not argue with the economical and social influence that these women have not only on the younger society, but on society as a whole.

Yes, half-nude videos do sell and so does cross dressing and wearing bra and panties on stage in front of thousands. I do not see how that is a positive message to the young. Does that mean that a successful porno star would be considered a good role model and have a positive message to the young?

ReplyDeleteI believe that these women do belong on this list because they are powerful women that have influenced and changed the entertainment business forever. They are role models and inspiration to fellow singer/musicians, and they work hard to make their music and entertain us. celebrities have credibility and they could influence people and raise awareness about social and economical issues just because of who they are. In our world, especially in our country, money is power and both these women are making millions of dollars. For these reasons i see no problem with them being on this list they deserve to be.

ReplyDeleteIn actuality, today’s generation of entertainers see themselves as a brand or corporation—much like Apple, Nike, Kellogg, GM, Forbes, etc. Therefore, young singers belong in the company of renowned world leaders in business and politics. For example, whenever Lady Gaga’s and Byonce’s names are mentioned there are some global values placed or associated with solely the names—not to mention their image. Their name or star power can affect social change or even incite war.
With money and fame (or infamy) comes power. Lady Gaga and Beyonce did not buy or inherit their power like most world leaders, politician or business people. Like any successful corporation, these singers’ power come from years of marketing, talent, hard work, and millions of fans who give them approval and admiration.
Ironically, the same can be said for most successful politician or business people. The only difference respectively is that these fans are voters, consumers, investors, family or employees.

ReplyDeleteMe personally I think age doesn't matter in this industry look at Justin Bieber , this young kid came out of nowhere and started sweeping award from left to right so anyone has a chance young or old in this industry even in acting. Lady Gaga is admired because to me she has her own , unique , cray style that makes her different and she sings well i mean I love her songs , and she has her fan and Beyonce sings well no doubt about it ans she too has her own style of R&B and her Fans but I guess Lady Gaga music step out and this industry is like a Wheel today you may be up the chart and tomorrow down so that is how it is.
