We have social Institutions in our course. Government is one of the most powerful institutions in our lives. We have a major election in a week from now.
You’ve heard the candidates for governor battle it out over the airwaves. Next week we have other issues to consider in the election. The 2010 ballot will ends with proposed constitutional amendments and resolutions that require voter approval. These cover a variety of topics and are generally written in almost incomprehensible legal jargon. This section is important because they are proposals to change the highest state law in the land, our state constitution.
Even if you are not a Georgia resident, and subsequently don’t vote in this state, these laws may well affect you just the same as others. Regardless if you vote in this state or note please respond to the questions below.
Are you familiar with the proposed amendments and resolutions?
Which one is of the most interest to you?

ReplyDeleteOne of the amendments on this years election' ballot is "To add $10.00 tag fee on all private vehicles to fund statewide trauma care". Currently Georgia' highway deaths are 20% higher than the national average. This resolution was proposed to reduce this, by putting a trauma centre in more hospitals, and making it easier for the injured to get trauma care as soon as possible after an accident. Please keep in mind, that we are not talking about the usual "whiplash" injuries, but those that involve spinal injuries, brain injuries, multiple broken bones and internal injuries. This amendment is very important to me, because I was recently involved in an accident, and am very thankful that Kennestone Hospital was in close proximity for me to get care. You might have seen the advertisement on tv, were the injured girl was been taken away in the ambulance, leaving an anxious looking mother behind. No-one wants to be in such a helpless position, but if you are, you would like to know that there is a trauma center close by. This is a small cost to pay for this priviledge and I hope everyone vote for it.
LuShawna G. online
ReplyDeleteI do agree that there needs to be more trauma centers. However, I believe that there are other means of getting the money besides hitting our pockets. The way the economy is these days many cant afford $10 grant it its a yearly fee but that can still effect someone. If the state would get a hold on other issues such as misuse of Welfare, etc., there would and should be money available for things like this. Rather then always taking from residence.

ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with the changes that will happen with this vote, as I'm not very interested in politics. but from reading the above comments, I have to agree there are many other ways to raising money other than taking it from the citizens, i also agree that there are other pressing matters than having more trauma care centers, like misuse of welfare, loss of jobs etc. I think we should opena gladiator arena to raise the money. at least then the government is providing an entertainment and a fund raiser. YAY!

ReplyDeleteAmendment 1 proposes an amendment to the state Constitution to allow enforcement of contracts that restrict competition during or after the term of employment...
When you really get to understand the meaning of this text you see that it's a TERRIBLE idea. The job market in Georgia is so low and they want to make it MORE difficult to find jobs.
The contract enables bigger businesses and out-of-state employers to keep their employees from leaving and performing their work for a smaller business or from starting their own. Employees must sign a contract and are not able to leave and perform their same profession while still under contract.
The most disturbing part of this amendment is the wording on the ballot.
"Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to make Georgia more economically competitive by authorizing legislation to uphold reasonable competitive agreements?"
See the manipulation there? The legislation would NOT make the market more economically competitive. In fact, it would restrict the market substantially.
~ Katie H. (ONLINE) ~
ReplyDeleteGeorgia is a at will employer state. This means that you can be fired for any reason or for no reason at all. You have no recourse when this happens. The problem with signing a contract is that you may feel there is an obligation to stay in a place that is not an ideal workplace. People get educated in specific fields and usually can't find another line of work unless they go back to school. I think that this will discourage people from obtaining employment in Georgia.
i have no interest in politics at all. because alot of deciet and corruption goes on in the political arena therefore my interest in politics is like sub zero. which isnt a good thing. but certain matters catch my eye. like the amendment number 4:
ReplyDeleteAllows the State to execute multiyear contracts for projects to improve energy efficiency and conservation.
i would vote for it because it will provide an economic stimulus while reducing energy consumption. And the work would be paid for with the energy savings rather than a new expense to the state's tight budget. that means it will provide an opportunity to save money and be enviromentally friendly.Energy efficient buildings with high-performance systems can increase business performance and worker productivity by 15 percent through better indoor comfort and air-quality control.
now such matters i take interest in. but amendments like number 1 which are fraudulent in that they use manipulative language for voters is a definate no. because it is a trap for georgia residents

ReplyDeleteI’ve heard some of these proposals mentioned before, but I wouldn’t say that I’m very familiar with them. I agree that it would be beneficial to have trauma centers in hospitals around the state, but I don’t think that all people with private vehicles should have to pay for them. People these days pay enough taxes as it is. To me, the most interesting amendment that is being proposed is amendment 4, which states, “Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to provide for guaranteed cost savings for the state by authorizing a state entity to enter into multiyear contracts which obligate state funds for energy efficiency or conservation improvement projects?” The amendment would allow the state to make multiyear contracts for projects that would hopefully make state buildings more energy efficient and less wasteful. I think conservation of energy is important, but I’m a little wary since the state will have to fund the projects by going into debt (although, supposedly the improvements will pay for themselves since the energy costs will be less).

ReplyDeleteI agree with you in that Georgia could find many ways to fund this bill. Yes we do need the trauma centers to be available but we already pay a lot in taxes compared to other states. I'm sure they can look elsewhere to find funding other than extra taxation.

ReplyDeleteI am familiar with the proposed amendments and resolutions. I viewed them online via the secretary of state website. The proposed amendment that I am most interested in is House Bill No. 482 which if passed would allow business owners to not pay ad valorem taxes on tangile personal property that is inventory of the business. I feel that business owners should be exempt in this manner due to having to survive in this struggling economy and keep their doors open for business. I feel this way would help offset some of the cost for other things they are paying for, and could possibly use the money toward insurance for their employees.
Most important to me and for anybody else that needs the vote - I will vote "NO" on 1 (non-compete). It seems to go against our right to prosperity. And it's like giving an employer the right to own the skills you've acquired while working with them. We also need not do this in times like these with unemployment as high as it is.
ReplyDeleteI will vote "Heck NO" on 2 (tag fee). We are already taxed to death. Why not impose the tax on the people that cause the accidents? Hand the bill to drunk drivers and other reckless drivers.
Vote "NO" on 3 (DOT projects).
Vote "Yes" on 4 (energy savings). Finally, something worth voting yes for!
Vote "Yes" on 5.
Referendum Vote a "BIG YES".
See yal at the polls!

It boils down to two things for me. For one, we can't count on our tax dollars to be used for the cause they were intended for regardless of what that cause is. An arguably more important point is the state of our economy. We have too many people, not nearly enough jobs, and entirely too many buildings, infrastructures and automobiles. I would be more willing to support taxes to fund green energy than I would another building with a large parking deck etc. We might very well have a need for a trauma center but we also have basic needs that we are not going to be able to fill much longer with the way we are treating our environment. A trauma center is a quick fix to a moderate problem but green energy is a permanent solution to a huge disaster.

ReplyDeleteI agree 110% with you. The governement is always trying to take from all of the hard working people, and it isn't fair to us! We work hard for our money, pay our taxes, and yet they are always thinking of some way to charge us more money! The concerns should be to the misuse of wellfare, misuse of unemployment money, or misuse of disability, etc. We could use some more trauma centers, but they need to figure out wiser ways to spend money. So you made a great point!

ReplyDeleteI am familiar w/ the ammendments to be voted on. The most important to me is No. 1, re: the No compete clauses. I dont think corporations should get away with no compete clauses in ANY state. How dare they tell us what we can and cannot do. They are simply fearful of competition, which is what this country thrives on.
Courtenay Seay_online
ReplyDeleteI will be the first to admit that I am insufficiently informed when it comes to politics. I am familiar with amendment 2, however. If this passes, when will it stop? $10 here, $10 there. They do not, and have they not, used the tax dollars they already collect. Why should the state pay for private ventures anyway? I have found no explanation of how the funds raised would accomplish the expansion from 16 centers to 30. Some say that this amendment will take money away from public schools and that opens a whole different can of worms.
Maybe all of this comes from my complete distrust of politicians in general but it says something to me that these proposals are always so hard for a layman to understand. They WANT us to be confused.
I am not aware of any of the amendments and resolutions accept for one. This is because I find it hard to find an unbiased source of inforamtion on the subject matter. Because I feel like money is not spent or budgeted wisely by the government I usually oppose tax increases. I do the best that I can in regards to other issues. However, I really feel that we need more trauma centers in Georgia and I will gladly vote yes to increase the tag fee by $10 a year, which is just 83 cents a month. It will then be my responsibility to be aware of whether the trauma centers are being built as promised.

Because of this, too many people die. At least will wel-fare there is a solution alhtough it needs work.
ReplyDeleteThe one that concerned me the most was this one:
ReplyDeleteAdds $10 tag fee on
private passenger
vehicles to fund
statewide trauma care
expansion.
Senate Resolution No. 277
Ga. L. 2010, p. 1260
“Shall the Constitution of Georgia
be amended so as to impose an
annual $10.00 trauma charge on
certain passenger motor vehicles
in this state for the purpose of
funding trauma care?”
To me hear is another example of government getting too big. I have many family members in the medical field and they totally disagree with this. We , private tax paying citizens should not have a tax on our vehicles or any vehicles to provide money for a trauma center. There are private investors and we can choose to give to this if we want. We should not be penalized or taxed depending on the vehicle we drive. I could go on and on about big government, so I will stop here.

The law to enforce the contracts kind of baffles me for one simple reason. Why does there need to be legislation to enforce the contracts people willing sign? Shouldn't the fact they already signed a contract be enough? This isn't the first time government has passed legislation to enforce laws already on the books. Doesn't make sense to me.

ReplyDeleteAlthough politics isnt my favorite subject, I have actually been paying attention this year because the decisions made will directly impact my life and those around me. For Georgia to fund the trauma care, they can easily tax leisure items ie saunas, cigarettes, liquor. Employment contracts unfortunately are not common to me but the corporations dont need any more support the workers do.
The biggest thing everyone has to do when voting is to READ and COMPREHEND. The tactics of the government is to make the statement wordy and confusing leading you to the answer in which they want..ie the right for gay marriage was very misleading. So I advise all to take there time and vote upon common morals and beliefs..I am.

Yes, I reviewed each amendment and attempted to find reviews that describe the real intent of each amendment. Getting through the legalese and reading between the lines is difficult. An example of power elite confusing and controlling the masses (in my opinion).
Which one is of the most interest to you?
Only Amendment 2 has the most immediate impact on me, therefore, it is of interest.
I hate to be pessimistic but when it comes to government I have my doubts as to whether they can get it right. Although pessimistic, I will vote. In order to revolt we have to vote.
As for Amendment 2, ten dollars isn’t much but it is still another TAX. While the funds are designated for trauma care, who’s to say other funds will not be diverted? Add this amendment, next year you get another amendment with a $10 “fee”, the following year you get another, and so on. Where does it stop? I don’t believe anyone really has an idea of how much we pay in taxes. You know what you directly pay (sales tax, withholding, maybe property, gas tax) but there are taxes on products before they even hit the shelf. The Referendum proves this point.
How does the government pay for its projects? Reduction in the size of the government, implementation of fiscal responsibility, and accountability for its actions.

ReplyDeleteI will be voting yes to amendment 2. Even though the “tea party” is against this amendment I feel that it is a good way to raise the funds for a much needed cause. The $100,000,000.00 it will raise, plus the 30, 000, 000.00 being raised from the super speeder law will directly affect lives. I just know that if it could have helped me I would have been very grateful. And I would be more than happy to give $10 of my money to help anyone that goes through something like that.
If someone did a nationwide fundraiser that was privatized, I bet they would raise a ton of money for trauma centers. And people would probably feel like they could give MORE than ten dollars. But because it's labeled a tax they are resisting.

ReplyDeleteI had no previous knowledge of any of the proposals to change the state constitution. So, I took the time and researched the amendments that are up for discussion. After researching them the one that interest me the most is amendment 1, Non-Compete Agreements. First off, the way they are wording it on the ballot is whack, they are making sound like something different from what it really is. Or start your own business. It's rediculous. I mean, if someone with experience can move on to a better job and leave an opening for an entry level position for someone else, why not go for it. People starting their own businesses will likely have even more jobs available over time. We're all trying to move on to bigger and better things. That's just going to slow us down. ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I am not into politics and I really dont think my vote will make or break anything. It seems to me people will vote for the person that will give them the most broken promises and then act suprised when they dont come through. These new admendments might effect us but it doesnt matter what they do, their always gonna keep coming up with ways to take more and more money from us until the whole nation goes into poverty beyond repair.
I know this lady that has 8 kids, gets over $1,000 in food stamps, gets $278 a month for each kid, is on section 8 and lives in a 5 bedroom house that the state pays more than half of the rent for. How is it they can allow stuff like that fall through the cracks and see nothing wrong with it yet those of us who work hard for even our little min. wage are in debt up to our eyeballs and still find ways to tax us for the things that should already be taken care of.
Peggy A:(on-line)
ReplyDeleteAt first glance Amendment #2 seems necessary and well-intended; but once you begin to peel back the layers of this amendment it becomes more intrusive. Are the memories of the citizens of this country so short that it has forgotten about the trillions of dollars we already owe to government-sponsored enterprises? And yet, this amendment is another attempt at forcefully burdening the backs of our citizens with more debt that we cannot carry. This was the very reason the founding fathers wrote the Constitution, to escape the tyranny of an institution that forced dictatorship. Privatization would prove to be a more innovative and resourceful way to establish these trauma centers. Untie the hands of these venture capitalists so they can regenerate the economy into the way it was intended. So exercise your right to vote.

ReplyDeleteThank you for your response on Amendment #1. It's a no-brainer, right? How can you tell a citizen of this state they cannot compete? Isn't that what we all do on a daily basis? Also I constantly see myself sharing the road with bicycles, now this wouldnt be so bad, but they arent paying to sit in the road going no more than 10 miles an hour, and im the one wasting my gas, and who has to buy my tag and insurance, and they are able to get on the road free, and dont have any fees, and you cant pass them, i mean i just think that it isnt too fair for everyone else, so back to my point, why not take the extra money off them, instead of us who are paying to be on the road, instead of taking it away from the people who are already paying so much.

The amendment 2 is for a good thing i do believe, but if they would cut out the bull that they spend on useless things, and get it from a better place than us who are already paying plenty out, granted it is just a small tax 10 dollars isnt going to kill us, but still i do not think the way they are getting it is the best, why get it from the people who are already having a hell of a time already , and have to pay as much as we do? Also I saw above about the government paying out so much to the lady with 8 kids, honestly they need to sterilize her, and let her work out her own issues, she should think of the consequences, of having 8 kids before she did. our government is too free with giving out money as it is, i believe the government needs to take care of its issues before adding more taxes to the citizens.

ReplyDeleteI am from Washington state and am not a resident of Georgia so I'm really not familiar with the issues on the ballot this year, but what I read online was interesting. I think Amendment 2, which imposes a $10 fee for drivers to fund trauma care, is a good idea. Although it is another increase in money that we owe to the government, it goes to a really good cause and I believe that it is important to contribute to these kinds of programs. It is hard to imagine being in or involved in a trauma situation, especially in a remote area, never having been in one, but I know that if something happened to me or a loved one I would want quick and efficient care. Also, the fee is small but if paid by everyone a lot of money will be able to go to the program. Most importantly, though, is the fact that the money raised is strictly for the trauma program and cannot be ciphoned into other government accounts.

ReplyDeleteI don’t know too much about these amendments as I don’t vote. My thoughts are in the end the government is going to do what they want to do if you vote for it or not. They will just make up a fun battle that makes you look like you just barely lost. I’ve read some posts about the $10 tag tax but that’s about it. I don’t agree with tags on vehicles. So that should sum up my opinion of that. I look at it as just another tax on an unnecessary tax. (Say this with sarcasm) “We need to tax you more for this great thing that’s going to save lives”...BS!
STOP CHARGING US MORE FEES!! Do we need more trauma centers? Yes. Do I know how to get the money? No. I agree that raising tax on alcohol and tobacco would help boost our economy in a big fat way...sell alcohol on Sundays. ReplyDeleteOne of the issues is the "no tax on groceries." With the rising food costs no taxes on groceries would be a big help. You can spend anywhere from $1.00-$2.00 on groceries on tax and with Georgia having at least 7% in taxes it can really add up especially if you go to the store often. Also the trauma centers. Do we really need to add $10 for those trauma centers? If I'm not mistaken that "ad-veloram" tax on tags is killer already. When it comes time to buy tags, i'm almost tempted to get a bike. I just don't think we need to raise more money for things that we should already have enough of, like trauma centers.

I’ve heard them say, “It only costs a penny! Who doesn’t mind giving a penny?” Well, it's not just one penny, it’s a penny for EVERY dollar you spend. That can add up to quite a lot. Although it will be annoying if the tax goes down to 5%, because I’ve been practicing at calculating the 6% tax in my head. But I guess it might be easier with 5% anyway.

ReplyDeleteAdmittedly I didn't know much of the state amendments before reading this blog, but I have a pretty good idea of what to expect now. It looks like I'm pretty much alone but I think this $10 vehicle tag fee sounds pretty reasonable. It is only $10, and I am aware that the fees add up, but this is only $10 to SUPPOSEDLY go to a good cause. My biggest gripe with it is how much I doubt most of that money actually will go to trauma centers.
In response to Sarah Thompsons post, I agree that I would be more of a hindrance to the system than a benefit through voting. Not to say I don't care about voting, but I always feel like I'm choosing the lesser of two evils, so at this point when the local/state issues are something that don't majorly affect me, then I feel I shouldn't be responsible for how they effect others.

ReplyDeleteI was actually unaware that they were trying to make amendments or resolutions to the constitution. It actually really bothers me that our government is trying to take control of our lives. We are a free people and not to me ruled by a dictatorship. I believe in less government, one flat rate tax such as the sales tax only, enough with this income tax, I work hard for the money I get and I have to give 30%+ on my money right off the top. Any changes made to the constitution should be prohibited by law and strictly enforced. We elected the officials they didn’t put themselves in charge in my mind, I’m their boss along with the population of this nation not the other way around.

ReplyDeleteSad to say I haven't paid much attention to this election it just feels that sometimes the issues being discussed arent' the real issues they actually deal with once in office. All candidates have their good and bad sides. They honestly need to put their personal issues with each other aside and look at ways at making this state work better as a whole. That being said being that we have one of the highest unemploment rates and trying to disallow skilled workers the freedom to make a choice will only make compaines leave and employees not want to stay here.

ReplyDeleteI do not like amendment two. The tax is supposed to fund rural trauma care centers but the money will be put into a trust fund that is under the state legislature’s control. So, at any time the legislature can use the money for general purposes. The amendment sounds like it is just redistribution of wealth from urban areas where we live, that have more cars, to rural areas where the trauma centers are supposed to be built; if they are built. So what will businesses do that use vehicles to perform their jobs? Will they be able to pass on this tax?

I agree that my vote does not count. After reading about bureaucracies in chapter five of our book I feel like we are nothing to the people who are on the top of the decision making scale so why does what we think matter? We have to do what we are told anyway or be punished. I also think we are taxed enough too. Looking at income taxes alone I already feel as if I am a slave to our government. I mean I do not even get to see all the money I make a week before the government takes what they want.

ReplyDelete"Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to impose an annual $10.00 trauma charge on certain passenger motor vehicles in this state for the purpose of funding trauma care?"
I believe this amendment should be passed. I think that more trauma centers should be placed here in Georgia. No one should have to drive unnecessary distances in order to get the trauma care that they need. This is a small fee in order to build the job force up also. More jobs will be available for all. Medical jobs are always necessary in our society. So this amendment in my opinion is a good one.

ReplyDeleteI am not into politics anymore because I know this social and governmental structure is a farce. I have never supported anything GA has done and none of their so called amendments interest me. The candidates talk a good game about making things better for the common man like more trauma centers and the like, but why aren't they already established? Do you really need so much money to build something that's need by the WHOLE population. The fact of the matter is there are third world countries with universal health care and a country like ours has to vote a politician in just to argue the point of having more much needed trauma centers. And you poeple want to waste your time voting.

ReplyDeletePlease, an extra $10.00 tag fee? This why Georgians are laughed at in other parts of the country. How many times a year do you pay this extra tax? What about all the other more oppressing taxes that are imposed on people? What about public transportation whoes? They may not pay the tax directly, but they do and those people pay more than any driver on the road and never see any improvements in their areas. If $10 more bucks a year gets a trauma center so be it. Stop being so petty and get things done in your state. Work on worse laws on the books, like the one where your boss can fire you for whatever reason. Your only compensation is unemployment if you qualify. Whay doesn't anyone bring up this law? Oh that's right. This is 'the right to work state'.......and the right to be fired and not earn the wages you are worth state. They must of forgotten to include the ending.

ReplyDeleteThe tax for the trauma centers will just free up money in the general fund that isn't delineated for other things. It is just an excuse to raise our taxes, they could just use the money we are all ready being taxed towards the trauma centers. The money is there, they just don't want to use it for trauma centers if they can get us emotional about trauma centers and can get us to give them more money for it. It isn't like we aren't already paying our medical bills at these places. There is so much government waste - if they wanted to do it, they could have already made it happen.

ReplyDeleteAmendment 1 - Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to make Georgia more economically competitive by authorizing legislation to uphold reasonable competitive agreements?
Passage would change the Georgia constitution that says contracts containing non-compete agreements are "null and void." Many states address this within common law, but Georgia policy is contained within the state constitution. As a practical matter, passage would enable Georgia employers to enforce non-compete agreements with senior executives and others in lower job classifications when the company decides the former employee holds confidential information.
I actually agree with this as I have signed contracts for employment where I was privy to confidential info and I knew up front that after my employment I could not work for a competitor for 6 months. At the same time, I also agreed (on the contract as well) to not disclose any info I had learned. So, if you already have the non-disclosure agreement then I guess it doesn't matter to have the non-compete too. I think it boils down to who decides what is confidential and upholds the non-compete clause. If it is all spelled out in your contract then there shouldn't be an issue.
Makes sense to me that it isn't trying to stop competition but protect employers.

ReplyDeleteI am more familiar with the proposed amendments and resolutions due to your questioning.
The one of most interest to me is the $10 tag fee to fund statewide trauma care expansion. I think of all the private passenger vehicles throughout the state of Georgia and imagine all the money that would go to funding trauma care. I look at the hospitals around the Metro-Atlanta area and think of all the additions that are already happening or not. The abilities that are already in place, such as ambulance and airlift transportation for critical/trauma patients to specific hospitals that have such trauma units. I don't see the need to tax the citizens of Georgia for something that isn't necessary.

ReplyDeleteThe only amendment that I am really aware of is the is the one to put more trauma centers in Georgia. Personally I think this is a no brainer. They started the super speeder law hoping it would generate money for the same cause but it did not work. It is ten dollars added to every driver in Georgia. With planning over the next few years I do believe it is possible to do this without the ten dollar charge but this is a huge problem and I don't think people realize how bad Georgia is in this area. It's sad and pathetic and needs immediate attention! Right now stop thinking about more taxes. This is something that will save tons of lives for many years to come. I know, I don’t like what is going on ether but if you don’t pay attention to what’s going on in politics then you, and I’m not saying you, but anyone who doesn’t pay attention to politics will more likely make an uneducated decision/vote about something that you know nothing about. Does that make sense? A lot of people I’ve talked to say they don’t like what’s happening so they just don’t care to listen or watch anything about the different things that our government is about to change in our lives, mine in particular… I now and my children and their children have to pay for the debt of this country. I don’t like that, I’ve lived my life debt free and I still have to pay for these countries debts… that bothers me a lot.

ReplyDeleteI am not familiar with the proposed amendments and referendum because of all the negativity surrounding the election has made me not even want a slight association with it. All the back and forth and the placing blame on others is a turn off. I did however, (for the purpose of the assignment) take the time to find out the necessary information. I am most interested in amendment 1, Georgia's employment contract enforcement, because it would impact my family to the highest extent. This amendment seems to be the most unconstitutional of them and impedes on our freedom. I would not support this for the simple fact that it would not build our job market but do just the opposite. With the economy in shambles amendment 1 would not progress our economy to the point where it needs to be.

ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I am not very aware or familiar with all the amendments and resolutions that will be present in this year's election process. However, after reading this blog post and several of the comments posted above, I have a new motivation to educate myself on each situation so that I can be prepared when I cast my vote. The one amendment I am decently familiar with is Amendments 3 and 4, which would allow the State Government to sign multi-year contracts dealing with transportation (3) and energy (4) projects. This is something I'm in favor of mainly due to the hope that passing these amendments would galvanize the government in creating new opportunities to improve our transportation/energy systems. I understand that if the government is unprepared to fully fund a certain project it could be started one year and left unfinished later on, but the opportunity to get things moving in our state is too tempting to pass up.

ReplyDeleteAmendment 1, and 3 are all no's from me. With Georgia being an at-will state, restricting someones ability to find work has no benefit at all. I don't think we need to spend on better roads, we just need better drivers! Amendment 2 and 4 seem worthwhile because of the benefits they can provide, by increasing trauma centers you add job potential, and that center might save your life one day. For 4, improving efficiency is always a smart idea, as long as the debt incurred will be covered by the amount saved from pursuing the project, it will take a lot of oversight. I have no opinion on 5, and I support the referendum. Business pass taxes onto consumers, lower taxes and you lower prices, or raise profits. Either way, the economy is boosted.

I agree with you completely in regards to this amendment being a no brainer. I hope everyone votes yes! Georgia only has 4 level 1 trauma centers and that is clearly not enough. "Right now stop thinking about more taxes. This is something that will save tons of lives for many years to come. And ten years from now one of us might be glad we voted yes!" I love how you broke it down with these statements. As a Georgian, all should want to contribute this $10 fee if not to save someone else but to save themselves. The survival rate significantly improves at a trauma center but if people need to be air lifted to get to one (taking who knows how long) it's ultimately killing us.
Nicholas L (online) in response to Beth M -
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to undermine your reasoning, but your basis for voting against the $10 fee is a little unfounded. You've said you think of all the projects already happening for hospitals and trauma-care centers, but you only state that these are happening in the metro-Atlanta area. This amendment, I've found, is there mainly to help areas that are specifically NOT in metro-Atlanta. Public health officials have stated that Georgia needs at least 25 to 30 trauma-care centers throughout its borders - currently we have 17. Also, many rural towns or small cities are 50+ miles from the nearest trauma center. As a fellow metro-Atlanta citizen, I understand your thinking of just the area you live in but in this case the amendment deals with a much bigger picture. Personally I've decided to vote in favor of this amendment due to the facts I've found from researching the matter.

They are all important to me since they will all in some way, affect something in my life. I guess the one that stuck out the most was the $10 addition on tag fees amendment. There has got to be some other way to get this money raised for much needed trauma centers. My husband and I just renewed his tag for his 2009 Chevy and the ad valorem tax was over $200. Why don't they get some of the trauma money from all the poor saps already stuck paying this ridiculous fee???

ReplyDeleteWhile all the adments have intresting pros and cons, adm 1 on non compete is terrible and will handcuff employees if they change jobs withinthe same industry. Truma centers are always a good thing, but at what cost and who pays?
While it is nice to share the benifit, what would happens if a person who does not own a car falls off a ladder and is brought to the truma ctr and is turned away because they did not contribute to the pool for this great service? It may sound silly, a nanny state to cover the what if's. ReplyDeleteI have to be honest, up until this assignment I was not completely familiar with the amendments on the ballot. Between school, an 8 month old and life I haven’t had time! I am appreciative that I was forced to look up what is going on in our state. I was not planning on voting this term because I am not up to date on the issues, and we already have enough ignorant people voting in this state anyway.
From what I did read however, the first two caught my eye the most. Amendment #1 is just plain silly in my opinion. How can our government put that kind of restriction? That is just plain ludicrous. The wording of the ballot question, “Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to make Georgia more economically competitive by authorizing legislation to uphold reasonable competitive agreements,” is so incredibly deceitful, and I hope people are smart enough to do their homework before casting their vote.
Amendment #2 is so hard to chose a side on, because I do agree with most of you, it is another TAX. However, I feel like it is $10, once a year and it is going to the medical field. We need to cut down on welfare, food stamps, etc. THAT WOULD PAY FOR A TON! But that is another issue. What most people don’t know is we don’t have enough trauma facilities. My husband is a paramedic/ firefighter for the city of Atlanta, and a lot of time is spent trying to find a trauma centre with ROOM to take these patients. Many have to be life flighted to Chattanooga, or Grady. When you look at the amount of car accidents that are occurring, and the traffic that keeps accumulating, you have to consider what if it where you that was hit and critically injured? You wouldn’t want the paramedics that are taking care of you to have to question if the nearest hospital has a trauma centre equipped to take you?
