Summer Foods

We are in the middle of our Culture Chapter, so I thought it appropriate to discuss food. You don’t have to be a sociologist to know that regardless of culture, life happens around food. We celebrate, we mourn, we bond and we share precious moments around meals. Summer time is no exception. In the United States it seems as though we have foods specifically enjoyed at this time of the year. However, they may differ across regions of the U.S. and among cultural practices within the same state.

In your comment list your favorite summer activity and the food that goes along with it.

Grilling out is a great past time for my family and I. We love making burgers, hot dogs, and bbq chicken. Anytime we grill out we love to have pasta salad. Pasta salad to my husband and I equals summer. I never make it in the winter because…well I don’t know why, it’s just a summer food in our house. Even if we grill out in winter I don’t make it. I will make potato salad or beans. I don’t think I have ever thought as to why I make the pasta salad only in summer but it’s just something my family has been doing since I was young.

All I have to say is corn and peaches. In my home i have a tendency to make my family a little tired at the summers end of these things. We also grill out mostly during the summer which gives me a handful of other ways to make these. I come from a very large family and when i married my husband he also has a huge family so holidays during the summers are tremendous. This gives me joy to cook some of my favorite meals that are impossible to make, because fresh peaches are rare in the winter.

When the sun rises my family loads up in the truck with the boat in tow headed to the lake. When we are on the water we ride for a while. Then beach the boat the on an island of our choosing away from everyone. We have a little weber we always take with us. Hot dogs and hamburgers chips and gatorade is the menu everytime we go out to the lake.It is like the water and the grill go hand in hand in my family. All winter my hubby and i fight and bicker but once we are on the lake we are in love agian. Not sure how it happens must be good food and great friends.

Typically I do not have big celebrations for the summer. I do not really have any family except for my 3 year old daughter and my husband. Usually for the summer time we just eat lighter meals such as a lot more fruits and salads. I do not like to eat a bunch of hot meals because the mixture of the extreme heat and hot meals does not really set well with my stomach. Don't get me wrong we still eat hot meals such as hot dogs, hamburgers, soups, and those type things, there just ususally reseved for dinner. The only time we really have any summer time celebrations are on my daughters birthday ( which is this Friday!!!) and on my birthday which was on the 6th, and usually we go to one of my favorite restaurants which is scalini's and cook out or get pizza for hers. Other than that, unless we go to a friends cook out, we do not really eat differently in the summer time. However, the fall/winter season is a different story!!!

  5. Like most of you guys, we love to grill during the summer months. Some of our favorite items to grill are usually salmon, chicken, kabobs hamburgers and of course hotdogs!! My personal favorite is to put a good old sweet potato on the grill. I love color so our sides are usually pastas or baked beans. The best part of grilling is the easy cleanup and thats usually my excuse to use paper products.

I hate to sound so cliched, but my favorite summer past time would also have to be cooking out with the family. My mother lives in Cartersville, GA which is around an hour from where I live, but everytime we go down there we always end up grilling out. This past grill out that we had my stepdad had just bought a Weber grill, and was super excited about it. Honestly, I wouldn't know the difference but apparently it is some great grill. Also, at least once a summer we try to all get together and have some sort of family vacation to Florida. A couple of summers we were going to my uncle's beach house, and then this summer we planned on going to Disneyland, but some job shifts put that on hold for awhile. Hopefully, next summer we will get back to the vacation part of our summers though because I think it is great to spend sometime with your family since you don't really get to see them as much as you would like.

  7. Novella Noble "Online" said.....Culturally my family is light eaters in the Summer time. We mostly do a lot of bakes goods like cakes, pastries, salads, fish dishes, etc we use the summer time to go to the beach, fishing, and the lake. We are a very outdoor's family and enjoy traveling and sight seeing during this season however the temperature have been sort of a downer this summer because GA’s weather has definitely been hot. We try to take advantage of the long daylight savings time and enjoy the outdoors.

My favorite summer activity is vacationing. I love traveling. Specifically I love road trips. Food and road trips are peacefully compatible. If you're trying to save money then you are forced to eat snacks which isn't terribly bad at all. However, if your not saving money you have a plethora of restaurants to explore on your road trip.

Grilling out for sure!! When I think of Summer I think of grilling some hot dogs, burgers, ribs, whatever, and having corn on the cob, sliced watermelon, pasta or potato salad, baked beans, etc. Getting together with family and friends, doing fireworks, visiting the beach, or just hanging out on the deck or the porch. Call it your normal southern picnic outing, but I call it pure family fun and it brings everyone together. I love Summer...is it really almost over?? :(

I don't really have any summer activities because I am always working, especially on the holidays. I also don't have any foods that I just eat in the summer. I eat the same kinds of foods in the winter. I am not one of these people that just eat salads or just BBQ or even light foods. I do like to grill out even in the winter. I like eating foods like pizza, soups, and other hot foods in the summer. I know some people think that I am crazy for eating ice cream in the winter. I usually don't turn foods away except maybe liver. All this food talk is making me hungry. I need to make something to eat right now.

My favorite summer activity is the 4th of July, I know that is the day we celebrate our Independence. In my culture it's also the time when family and friends celebrate with one another. During that time my family usually barbeques we eat our grilled chicken, salad, bake beans, shish kabos , and of course my favorite grilled corn on the cob. It tastes so authentic just like I picked it myself. Unfortunately, my sister-n-law is the best cook among us so she usually prepares all the food. Once we have eaten we all sit around watch the fireworks then after we watch movies and enjoy family.

Well I'm going to be the first one to say this, but the activity is fishing and the food is ice cold beer and whatever else is around. The fishing favorite by far is north Georgia trout stream fishing (which was restricted by season only until recent years). I don't prefer to fly fish - too much to tangle. The Department of Natural Resources is still in the habit of stocking some mountainous trout streams yearly, so if you know what you're doing you can usually catch your limit before breakfast (which will of course include bacon and beer).

At first when I read Ashley Hansen comment I thought WOW! It's hard not to have alot of family in GA. I dont have family here besides my husbands family. And when we are not celebrating with them. We usually celebrate with our church friends. It's also a good thing to celebrate with just friends who becomes your family. Like a home away from home. So on those special holidays like birthdays or 4th of July you could establish a birthday or holiday club where you all celebrate at one another house. you can take turns. If they have children set up a small kickball game and let the kids participate also. Although I commented on that aspect of your celebration I also so that for Christmas you make up for all of the summer things you didnt do .

My family and I do not have a particular activity associated with summer as i was raised in Nigeria where it's summer all year round, but we do take advantage of the warm weather to spend as much time outdoors. Of course, my husband and kids love food but we do not have particular preferences. Over time, we have developed a practice where all members of the family come up with recipes which they would prefer we cook. The food may not come out perfect but the time we spend deciding on the food for the evening has become an activity which everybody looks forward to.

  15. Terri, my favorite summer activity, is 1 week before school starts I give my kids a back to school party. I have games for the kids to play, we have a volleyball game kids against the adults. we have a cakewalk.we have a water ballon fight called (think fast).you ask a question,if they don't answer fast you hit them with it. for food we have hot dogs, burgers,BBQ,chips, drinks, water, ice cream, cookies, popcicles,. And when night falls I pull out the projector in the yard and let them watch a movie, and give them popcorn, candy, and a drink. when the movie is over I say good bye I will see you again next summer.

My family like to cookout. Throwing some hotdogs or hamburgers and the favorite ribs on the grill and soak them in that sweet sauce just makes their mouths water. The meats are left up to the men the women make the coleslaw or potatoe salad, baked beans and especially those garden grown vegetables. I think that their favorite is desert is that homemade strawberry shortcake or baked apple pies. The kids usually have some type of ice cream. When we go to the lake we sometimes cook some fish. While the food is cooking the kids are playing in the pool the men are playing horseshoes or whatever keeps them occupied until the food is done.

Summer has always been a time for my family and I to get together and do all kinds of activities. From vacations to White Water, or Stone Mountain and making homemade icecream. We usually spend alot of time outside enjoying the weather and letting the kids play. My favorite activity for Summer time is just getting that time to spend with my family. We take my son to swing, or to ride 4-wheelers, or play around the lake. Homemade icecream is a must because we can all take part in doing something, and have a good conversation while enjoying our favorite summer dessert.

Well i have a lot of things i like to do during the summer but, mainly its cooking out on the grill and going to the lake to stay the day or camp out. It always seems that hamburgers and hot dogs are there then you might have steaks or ribs and chicken around sometimes and got all the fixing like baked potatoes, corn, potato salad, chili, slaw, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, baked beans and other things of that nature. Also you always need a good dessert to go with everything.

  21. Definitely grilling! I love spending time by the pool or lake in summer (anything that has cool water, considering high temperatures we have in Atlanta). And it is a perfect place to cook out. Hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, ribs with fresh vegetables and fruits etc. I really want to try fishing one day, so grilled fish can be added to the list. My other favorite place to cook out is Piedmont Park. It’s one of my favorite areas in Atlanta, and it’s just so peaceful and clean, and perfect. I love spending evenings there when it’s not too hot.

I enjoy going home to Mississippi and having a good ole fashion "Fish Fry". Yes, I know it's bad for you, but the catfish in Mississippi is very good! Also served are hush puppies, coleslaw, and for dessert, homemade ice cream! I guess that is why Mississippi ranks number one in the United States for obesity. Not something I'm proud of, but the food is so good!

Nowhere makes fried catfish like Mississippi.Oh and let's not forget the sweet tea. Add your family, and let the good times roll!

Reply to Yelena Kanayeva and Diamond Darden..I absolutely love fishing. But, the key is not to go during mid hot summer days. Instead go late in the afternoon. That is, if you have a nearby place to go. There is nothing better than drinking a cold beer and catching some fish.

My favorite summer activity is cooking out.We have Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day and we also celebrate family birthdays with cookouts. I come from a large family and we have such a good time when we come together. From the youngest to the oldest, we have fun.
My favorite foods at the cookouts are barbeque chicken, potato salad, baked beans and fruit. These foods are available all the time but it has become a tradition in my family that the above mentioned foods are on the menu. Maybe it's the grilling of the chicken that makes it a favorite of mine. Fruit is nutritious and I love it. Good food and quality family time makes the cookout my favorite summer activity.

I completely agree that Piedmont Park is one of the best places to go hang out during the summer. Along with it being very clean and pretty big it also has a lot of different summer activities that go on there, and most are free. I am not sure if they did it this year but I know last year they were doing movies in the park with a projector. Pretty cool idea, and anything free is always awesome.

  35. Whenever summer comes around in Atlanta, you can almost smell it for sure, with people getting their grill on. The taste of summer is the taste of nicely, mean ribs with chipotle sauce, after all it is the sauce that makes the grill. To go along with the meat, we make some homemade onion rings. And I am not talking about tasteless white onions, but the saucy, juicy red onions, top it with sweet corn salad and several glasses of sweet tea and pink lemonade.

Although we all do get together and meet up for summertime fun at a park or the beach and even somtimes at the home of a choosen family member. Our food of choice is seafood, seafood and sea food. lol!!! My uncle Tony cooks a mean steam crab pot with potatoes, corn, crab meat, sausages and king crab legs. Man it's good. My grandmother has seven children, five girls and two boys. Everyone cooks,so we get all kinds of cakes and pies to come along with the pot as well. I would have to say that I enjoy grilling out. Like most of everyone here, it's a ritural that a lot do every summer. The best thing to do is grill hamburgers and hotdogs. Now I actually do something else. I grill onions on the actual grill. Yes, I do this BEFORE I grill the hotdogs and hamburgers. I am a huge onion person and really can't have hamburgers or hotdogs without them. This will also season the grill grates and make the hotdogs and hamburgers taste really good. A fruit salad is always in the plans as well. (Cold of course) As well as a nice glass of Peach Tea. I have done this every summer with friends, and usually I spend a lot of my summertime in NC, but lately, I have just gone to the lake and grilled out with friends.

Terri you have to be like the coolest mom! Growing up my friend’s mom did similar things during the summer. She would have cookouts that had random water balloon fights or some other kind of fun activity that was a rare treat like a bounce house, water slide blow up thing or something funny like silly string. Those are the fun memories that definitely stick with kids growing up that make them feel loved.

One of my favotite summer activies is our Family Fun day picnic. This picnic is done every year in July and done at the church. Like Ashley's cookout, we to enjoy ribs, except ours are not cooked with sauce, they are cooked on the grill first, for a short period and then they are stewed down, there are many other foods that are "traditional" and on our menu every year. Foods like banana pudding, pasta salad, lots and lots of watermelon and cold pineapple pieces. We typically invite about 300but anyone is welcome. There are many other foods but these foods remain on our menu each year. But I will tell you that the smell of those ribs cooking from start to finish, will make your mouth water.

Camping and grilling at these lakes are so peaceful and relaxing. If you want to try fishing, try visiting Lake Winfield Scott up in the Chattahoochee National Forest, between Suches and Blairsville. If you are looking for trout the Department of Natual Resources stock this lake continuously through the summer and even hold fish rodeos for children during the summer. Lots of fun.

Too hard to name a favorite...I love everything about summer....cookouts with my family/friends....going to the beach, swimming in the pool or ocean, going on a vacation, reading books outside, mowing the lawn, enjoying a beer by the firepit late at night, leaving all the windows open in the house, letting all that fresh air in, etc. I could go on and on.

SUMMERTIME!!! Nothings says it better than going swimming and cooking out. The best summer day to me is going to my dads, swimming, eating hamburgers, hotdogs, baked beans and some chips, jumping back in the pool for a bit. Then later on get the watermelon out of the cooler and sit around the pool eating ice cold watermelon. Oh how I love summer days.

  70. my favorite summer activity has to do with a childhood memory. every summer growing up, my mema had a garden so we would always gather water from the creek and haul it to the garden. afterward, we would have watermelon. so my favorite activity would be anything with water, especially natural water followed by watermelon.

  72. My favorite summer activity has changed as I have aged. When I was a child, I loved boating and skiing with my parents and sisters; as a teenager and young adult, I did the same with friends. In my late teens, my dad bought a house boat that became "party central" and holds so many funny and wonderful memories. Once I had children, my summers were filled with their activities, baseball, softball, cheerleading camp, dance, gymnastics, and, of course, water sports! Now that my children are grown and have children of their own, our summer activities seem to revolve around whatever the grandchildren are doing! I also LOVE gardening, but have had to put that on the shelf for a few years as we are trying to finish our house before tackling the yard. Favorite summer foods are...homemade ice cream, watermelon (LOVE it!), and anything on the grill.
