SocFest Spring 2013

Greetings! Namaste! Chao! Saludos! Merhaba! Howdy!

What did you find most interesting about Soc Fest? Was it the display or story of a classmate, or was it information you discovered about yourself and your culture as you worked on the project?

The most intersting thing to me was the kid that spoke and danced at the begining of the fest. I think it is pure talent when someone can speak to music right out of their head. He did a wonderful job and is a very talented young man.

There were many interesting things I noticed at the Soc Fest. There were a few tables I walked around where I could relate to the things that were displayed. Some people used Southern cultural representations, which I used also. I could really relate to a couple of the classmate's stories and display, whether it had to do with canning, gardening, or the Southern flag.

I also thought that was an interesting cultural display. I think he did a great job also, especially since he got up in front of all of those people. It was very cool to watch him sing and dance.

I liked seeing other people's more. You may see someone who is possibly from a different background as you, but you'd never know the full story. I thought it was cool getting to know class mates more and discovering awesome things about people i've never met before.

  5. I love the stories and displays that everyone had. The dancing on the stage from both the Young Man and Lady were just amazing. I also loved how I was able to see other peoples culture and how they are different from my own. It was a great experience that I would differently do again if I ever had the chance.

I really enjoyed Soc. fest and I think it was a great assignment. I loved seeing other student's cultures, as well as finding out more about my own culture that I didn't know about. I liked the stories by other student and also there display's. You kind of had to ask questions because you don't know what anything is. I enjoyed all of the food and desserts. They were all delicious. I also loved that students actually went up on stage to perform some of there cultural dancing and singing.

In response to Bailey, the foods were fantastic and a lot of care went into each display.
What I found to be more interesting was the enthusiasm each person had when speaking about their culture. I learned a great deal as I shared my history with everyone. But I can't help expressing the joy of the two young people who got up on stage and share a live performance! They both were terrific!

I was not able to attend the SocFest this year due to family circumstances, however, I heard that it was fantastic! Anytime one talks about their culture, there's a lot of interesting things that you and that person discover from it. The culture is a journey itself, but I'm aware that the different flavors of food makes it even more unique!!! All the pieces come together to make-up one big BRILLIANT culture.

I totally agree with you. Anytime you have many cultures all at once, there's a lot more to learn other than what you've already known. It makes it that much more interesting! Not only that, but it;s exciting when you can find someone from the same culture as you with a different story. A variety of cultures is interesting to learn about, in general, but you learn so much more and you find yourself in another state of mind from what you previously knew.

I think what really stuck out for me was the discovery of myself and my subculture as well as how big it was! A lot of people who came up to my display loved showing me their tattoos and telling me about what they meant to them. It made me feel like I was part of a special club or something and it made me very proud about being part of my expressive generation.

Megan, your display was awesome and although I did not get to speak with you, I want you to know I admire that you are not afraid of who you are! As I am quite a bit older, our generation had to keep certain things to ourselves and expressing with tattoos on our bodies was one of them. Although it may have been accepted elsewhere, rural America it wasn't. So nice to see fresh faces of young people such as yourself growing our world in this manner. I want my daughter to be unafraid to be herself! There is a whole world out there to experience.

  21. C.Spears(41210) I enojyed seeing everyone elses cultural asspects. My family does not have alot of culture which has been passed down from one generation to the next. I found the student who had the famialy cookbook very interesting. First of all it was something that truely meant something to her and her family. Secondly, I can not cook, I try but it is one of those talents that I do not have. I would like to think that if my family had a cook book and if I would have had a mom, dad, grandmother, or other family member to cook with that I may be better at it.

The entire Social Fest was amazing and opened my eyes to the diversity of students at Chattahoochee Tech! I really enjoyed hearing about other's heritages involving other countries. The most interesting to me was the person that came way out of her comfort zone to tell about and educatel us because of her ordeal with vitiligo. I have known someone with this possible autoimmune disorder and for this young lady to tell her story was wonderful. We are who we are and when we embrace ourselves we can embrace each other and the future! This young lady could do wonders for other young people who are dealing with these types of issues. Thank you for sharing!

Many of the projects that I viewed were interesting. I do not remember the student’s name, but his project was on his Southern Culture. That project stuck out to me because I thought it was very creative how he used lights to enhance his poster. There was another project I viewed where another student made her own jellies and jams. I thought that was pretty cool because these days, many people are busy with everyday life, and you rarely hear about anyone having time to make their own jelly. There were many other great projects out there also, but those two stuck out to me.

The most interesting thing about the Soc Fest to me is seeing different culture with their uniqueness. It was a wonderful experience and some of the cultural materials displayed have a little resemblance with my culture. In a typical culture like mine, names are significant and it is attached to a particular circumstances. For example, Bola means born in wealth, my parent had wealth when they gave birth to me so, that is why I was given that name. Also, Yoruba tribe in Nigeria observed what is called a Naming Ceremony, which is also a time to make peace with the parents of the child no matter what the conflict or fight anybody might have had with them in previous relationships.

Soc. Fest was interesting for me for both my own culture and that of others. I actually took the time to look into my culture and learn things I previously did not know. I was surprised by the choices people made as far as cultures that were not heritage, but the culture they were raised in. I suppose this goes to back up the fact that we are all a mixed society. We are all parts of different cultures blended that we have created new cultures and subcultures and belong to several at one time.

I actually enjoyed everything about the Soc. Fest! At first I was dreading doing the project, but after I started on it I quickly realized how much fun it was going to be. Actually attending the fest was amazing. To see everyone's different cultures and taste all the food was definitely worth all the effort. My favorite was a girl who is half Brazilian. I can't for the life of me remember her name right now but I had the opportunity to sit and talk with her for awhile about her project and how much her heritage means to her. Plus she brought the most AMAZING cheese bread! So overall I really enjoyed everything as a whole.

    1. I agree Christine, I totally enjoyed every aspect of the SOC fest and I learned so much about the different cultures, the food and the different clothing. I have so many favorites but the one who sticks out was the guy who danced and did the spoken word. Loved it!! He was braver than i could ever be.

  63. I will start by saying the SOC fest was absolutely great!!! At first i was dreading it and I felt like it was just a "project" but upon arriving and seeing all the different cultures, food and clothing and traditions, I was amazed! I have learned so much about different cultures, the ones that stick out were Germany, Brazil and Africa. My 2 favorites were the guy who danced and did the spoken word and A lady from Kenya who had fabric from her wedding and a wedding album which showed how a traditional Kenyan wedding is, she also had hand woven baskets called peace baskets in which the women of the village weave in time of sadness and pain. For me personally the SOC fest was a way for me to teach people on Vitiligo and the effects on all races, I had so many people to ask questions and learn about the condition. It felt good to share my life with others. I thank you for the experience.

My expectations for Soc Fest were completely different than what it actually was. I think it's amazing that you turned your project into a learning experience and educated students on Vitiligo.

There were a lot of interesting things that I learned at soc-fest, but probably the most interesting display I saw was the woman who talked about growing up, and living in an orchard in north Georgia. She talked about how they would can all of their stuff, make their own apple butter and jelly, and she also brought in some of her homemade quilting. I also liked that I got to learn about all of the other cultures too that I had never really thought about. The cultures that I presented were also rather fun to showcase because I got see other people's reactions to my cultures.

After reading all of these reviews, especially this one, I wish I had been able to attend Soc Fest. It would definitely have been worth it to experience the cultural backgrounds of everyone and to see things from the point of views of other people!

I learned a lot of things during Soc. Fest. The most interesting thing to me was all the interesting things that different people's families made by hand. I was so impressed by the things people were able to make with the smallest amount of items to make it from. From baskets to wood carvings all the way to clothing were made, which were all very unique and cool. Also, the stories that follow with the items were just as interesting.

Soc fest was a very fun and interesting experience. I enjoyed viewing everyone's projects, and tasting food which was like sampling the world. I learned so much from the different displays and interacting with students. I learned a lot about different areas of the world, and even Georgia where I have lived my entire life.

  69. The Soc Fest was overall a great experience for me. It was sweet to see what everyone values the most in their life. It was also a time where you got to know your peers in a more personal way. It was a good assignment!

I loved social fest. It was like visiting several places at the same time. It was very interesting learning about these different places. I loved see how others dress in other places. It really opened my eyes to others ways of living/culture.

  75. Every thing was so interesting. In fact the cultural festival was like a mini world come together. Because I might not see this again, I recommend that the school set aside a day for cultural manifestations so that we can enjoy seeing and learning from other cultures.

I totally agree. It was almost like watching the travel channel. I could be in Georgia 50 years ago and then move forward to Africa in todays world, all with just steping to my left.

I was impressed by the turn out. Knowing now how many people where representing, I would have been happy with doing it on a Saturday and making it an all-day event. I began walking around and got so interested in a couple of works that I may have truly gotten around to half of the folks works. Doesn't it sound cool for next year's Socfest to be at an outdoor venue? We get a moon walk for the kids, a stage for the live entertainment. Set up full booths instead of tables. And let the cider guys fill those bottles with what where on the labels. All kidding aside, had such a good time and felt like I left there with a broader understanding of the world I live in.

I found that learning about my classmates and what is most important to them to most interesting and exciting thing about the Soc Fest. I actually didn't think it was going to be that fun and eventful but it was a pleasant surprise. I thought it was a cool wait to bring the information from our books alive and on display. I also thought it was pretty cool to share my values with my sociology classmates.

I was also apprehensive about the event. Leading up to the event I could only think about how much I didn't want to do this. It changed when I got there, I had a great time.

You hit the nail on the hammer. I almost didn't want it to end. I felt it should have lasted longer. I really think the timing was great because it took the pressure off of midterms. I also was pleasantly surprised at the amount of students that came and even more pleasantly surprised at the amount of work most people put into their project. It wouldn't be a bad idea for all departments to engage in some sort of festival each semester.

Soc Fest was a lot of fun, I just wish I would have been able to make it to the event earlier. What was most interesting for me was how different everyone's culture is. Even people who may have had similar items to display had different things that were important to them about that item. I do wish that it had lasted longer or that I had arrived earlier so that I would have been able to see more displays.

SocFest was a big surprise to me to be honest I don't usually deal well being in big crowds of people I'm not familiar with so i was really happy after walking around for a bit I got to meet some people I actually had a lot in common with. It was cool to see all the different cultures but for me it was really special to know that I wasn't the only one who had a specific love of what i do or what I'm a fan of. I had so much fun and it was really nice to finally meet Mr. LaPorte.

I was nervous about revealing personal parts of my life to others at SocFest. I had a good bit of fear. I was lucky that everyone was very supportive and encouraging toward me. The teacher even took a picture of my Pierogi which was unexpected.

My favorite part of Sociology Fest was all the different cultures coming together! I loved that it wasn't just cultures from different countries around the world, but sub cultures, like the south or Chicago. I learned a lot and had so much fun putting faces to the rest of the online classmates!

The Soc Fest was a great experience. I met many different people with different cultures. The two that stood out the most to me was one guy from America that served his country and he had all sorts of pictures from the service. He is a dedicated man to serve his country and he said he would do it again if he could. The other presentation that was admiring was a lady's about her grandfather. He was a black male that in the time when black's were discriminated against he had his own land and a farm that stayed in the family. I thought that was awesome. The Soc Fest opened my eyes to different ways of life and was a fun time.

I enjoyed the many displays of my fellow class mates. Each poster brought out a better detailed understanding of the different cultures. Most came from tradition and some from different beliefs. They all were very detailed and gave clear understanding of other peoples life.
