What's in a name?

In the coming weeks a major motion picture will be released entitled Kick-Ass. As I understand, it’s a theatrical rendition of a “comic book” by the same name. The main character is a high school student.

What is your immediate response?

What do you think this says about our society?

The first thought that came to my mind with the title "Kick Ass" is violence in underage kid's lives. School fights that are posted on youtube.com came to mind as well. I also took it on as the main charachter being a high school student, that might be picked on, finally snapping and getting revenge. I think of the main character as being a male, but I could be wrong. Teenage girls are now taking a more active role in school fightings.

What it says about our society is that it is okay to revert to our animal-like insticts and seek revenge for wrong-doings or for simple pleasure. It says that it is okay for teenagers to beat one another up in his or her school enviroment for wrong doings thrust upon him or her by another classmate. It could also mean that American's need violence in a movie for it to get those good box office ratings. No blood. No sales. The same goes with sex, but that's a different topic.

  2. The first thought that came to my mind is my son that is in 5th grade and the title "Kick Ass." We have tried to teach him right from wrong as far as "bad" language is concerned. He is a movie fanatic so I know this is a title he would come across and he might think it is acceptable language to use since it is being used in a movie title. I also thought about the main character being a high school student. At first thought I would think this movie would be about a student going around "kicking ass." But I could be totally wrong. I think in our society over the years the use of foul language in movie titles and on tv shows is more and more common every year. It is hard as a parent to teach your child right from wrong when certain things are deemed "acceptable" in todays society.

  3. When I see the title 'Kick Ass' it doesn't make me think it's going to be a violent movie. When I was in high school that was a fairly common saying for cool, awesome, etc. Kindof like we were talking about in class the different meanings of words such as 'bad' and 'fat/phat'.
Although I don't see the violence in the title, it doesn't mean that I agree with it being the title of a movie. It's just like songs on the radio now have a lot of reference to sex and drinking and things like that. Although younger kids may not know the meaning of the lyrics yet it won't take them long to figure it out. And in some way it kindof makes it 'ok' because it's on the radio. Same goes with 'cuss words'. If there in the title of a movie kids are going to think they must not be THAT bad...right??

For reasons that probably only matter to me personally, my absolute first reaction to the title was negative. I just happen to love words and the English language. Whenever someone resorts to using curse words I immediately assume it is because they are either too lazy to express themselves properly or too ignorant to know any better. I am not a prude, and I am all for a healthy shout out of “*#@*” when the need arises but to actually name a movie a curse word is a little ridiculous. It just seems like they are pandering to society’s love of exploiting the crude and vulgar. This is just a pet peeve of mine.

I think what this says about our society is that violence and vulgarity attracts audiences. Since the main character is a high school student, and it is based on a comic book, it seems like a shameless attempt to lure teenagers and young people, who are at that stage where cursing is cool because it is unacceptable to their parents.

If it is like a lot of movies based on comic books it probably has a great story with a complicated hero that comes from a tragic background and turns his life around to help mankind or something, like Spiderman. I hope they change to the name to something better because I think it turns off people unnecessarily. Moreover, give all the parents out there a break, it is hard enough for the ones with young kids to teach them that there is a time and place for everything, such as using curse words when a curse word is actually on a billboard, movie marquee, and newspaper ad as a movie title.

In response to Ashley L. I agree with you that society today has a lot of references to sex, drinking and curse words in songs on the radio. I am old enough to remember when they bleeped out any words like that. Steppenwolf had a song called “The Pusher” about drugs with a curse word in it and it was major news and a big deal about not saying the word when they played concerts even. I’m not saying it’s completely a bad thing, it’s just interesting to see how the pendulum has swung to where now it’s completely acceptable and commonplace to have songs about sex, drugs, drinking, prostitution, and other topics on mainstream radio. I personally think we need to scale it back to where there are some topics that are not so in your face every day that you become immune to them. I think we, as a society, should be shocked when we hear about a woman selling her body to buy drugs, for instance. Shocked would be a better response than just singing about it as the refrain of a song, where you do not even think about the words you are humming. Just sayin'.

Well, my first thought when reading this title is definitely not something that any kids need to see or even hear about. It justs sounds like a bad name that is being used to attract attention.

As for what it says about our society, I believe that this goes hand in hand with what is going on in our society. It is an "anything goes" world now. The use of profanity in the title of a feature film? People are showing no censorship of any part of their lives anymore. Hollywood is leading this trend.

  7. In Regaurds to Ashley L's comment:

You are defenitly right that the title could just be teenage slang meaning "awesome" or "cool". Songs on the radio are getting worse and worse. Violence, sex, and drugs are the main topic in most of them. So, of course one might think by looking at the title of this movie (knowing that the main character is a teenager)that it is going to involve some sort of violent act, sex scene, or contain drug usage.

  8. My first response is that this movie will probably be another mindless video game or comic book adaption; basically more mindless and meaning junk in a "Reality TV" society. Or it could go the ultra-liberal way like the movie Juno, and glorify teenage fighting or killing much like Juno glorify teen pregnancy. In a society where the majority of young adults only care about vanity, celebrity and what material thing they can get immediately, this does not surprise me. America, the most powerful and wealthy nation is completely full of stupid meaningless vain people. It’s a society eating itself from the inside. With our nation in crisis, the President bowing before other foreign leaders and trying to sell his ultra-socialist agenda while driving America into debt and the “Mob” willfully turning a blind eye to the joke America is on its way to becoming, does this even surprise any moderately self-ware individual. The American education is one of the absolute worst, why, because we teach to a test, not to knowledge and form. Not every American child is equal, for our education system to dumb down the education level so “no child is left behind”, is ridiculous. But hey, at least we know Paris Hilton has a sex tape, Tiger Woods likes a lot of women, and there is a group of rich old women that like to talk behind each other’s back in New York, Orange County and Atlanta, and that 40 year old mothers try to dress/compete like their teenagers. And who the heck is this Kendra lady? America society will become more and more un-educated with each passing generation until it collapses on itself.

Whether it would be funny or filled with violence.Kick-ass can be interprted many ways in a teenagers world that could be a good thing. But you say it's a take off from a comic book,so I was thinking super hero stuff. 11. It sounds as though it might be a movie of fun, mischievious, troubles that this "kid" gets into. Our society is in love with violence in humor. We all thrive on seeing people get hurt and laughing at their provacotive jokes. All the movies and shows that contain any of theses have the highest ratings. It might be because most of us can not do these things so we put ourselves in the characters shoes. So its like a since of relief to see someone do all the things that if we did in real life would either hurt us, or get us arrested and not have to worry about it.

I agree with most of what you are saying, but I was wondering how or if you are including the "violence in humor" in this movie title. If so, how did you come to this conclusion? I do completely agree with what you are saying that our society is using things such as these movies to show us what could happen to us and how we find it humorous when in reality it is quite sad.

My immediate response was, Wow! Seriously? This actually describes what America is coming to. High school students think there is no other way to solve a problem besides kicking ass.

I also read a brief summary of the movie--it seems like a typical American movie, stupid. The movie is about this high school student who wants to become a super-hero after reading a comic book. He also encourages his friends to also join his "super-hero" group. This movie seems like it is geared toward a younger crowd but yet it has a name like "Kick Ass." I will be surprised if anyone goes to watch this movie.

This paints a horrible picture for our society. Many people around the world already don't agree with anything America puts on it's t.v. screens.

I agree with you totally. Kids today are going to think that it is okay to say cuss words just because the media is supporting that kind of language. The problem is that it is harder to raise kids with so many other factors influence children. The media has a huge impact on children these days and it's very sad that the world has come to that.

  17. My immediate response to this movie is that it is geared towards teenagers. It will probably be a movie that does not cover a very serious topic. The main character will be a boy who has an obstacle to overcome. The movie will have some comedy in it also.

To me this movie just says that our society does not like to be serious all of the time. We do not take offense to titles like Kick-Ass because we are not a very strict society. This also shows that children have more freedom here than in other countries because it is OK for them to be in a movie with this title. The freedom that we give our children is not necessarily the best thing but it is just the way it is here.

I agree with your statement about turning on the radio and songs having a lot of cuss words in them these days. I am constantly turning the station or turning the volume down in the car when I have my son with me. I have caught him on several occasions singing these songs with these lyrics that have curse words. He thinks it is ok because it is on the radio. Same goes for this movie title. I could see him repeating this title to me or one of his friends. He wouldn't think there is anything wrong with it because the title is being displayed on billboards or movie previews or on the radio.

  20. When I read the title "Kick-Ass" I thought of a movie about fighting, but when I saw the trailer, I was a little upset you can say. How can High School students carry weapons? How can the producers allow such a glorification of kids with weapons? Take a look at all the superhero movies where the superhero has no powers, for example Batman. He is an exeptional person and the general public can bot relate to Batman's abilities, but in this movie any average kid can pick up a weapon and be a hero. It lets kids think that it is ok to play with guns and make the decision to be a vigilante. How can this movie be released after what happend in 1999 at the Columbine High School? Does our society think that it is ok for kids to carry weapons? It is not up to KIDS to do a trained police officers job. Movies like this give kids bad ideas and promote dangerous activities since it was so cool in the movies.

My first thought is that the title will take parents aback and kids will love it. That is likely the reason it that this title was given. It draws kids in since, for most of them, curse words are taboo. It will be considered "cool" if a kid sees it and can then go and tell all of his/her friends about it. I think that what it says about society is simply what has always been true about our society: we use whatever tactics will make the most money even if that something is drawing in kids to see a move that will not necessarily be a good movie for them to see.

On the other hand, the movie may be wonderful with a great message, but some kids would not get the opportunity to see it because we judge words too harshly. In the grand scheme of things, “ass” would probably be the lease offensive curse word that is used. Using it in a movie repeatedly would not even bring an adult rating.

I agree with you that we should not glorify teenagers or any other age child carrying weapons, however, I also am of the mindset that we as parents should censor what our children watch and be responsible for explaining the difference between reality and fiction. My kids play video games where they shoot monsters, but they know that monsters don't exist and they don't carry guns. Should we make it so that adults cannot create what they like or watch what they like so that children do not see it?

I don't think that Columbine happened because of something those kids saw in the movies. I believe that people who commit that kind of act have something inherently wrong with them in the first place.

  23. The first thing I think of is, what the heck does this title represent? Whose ass is being kicked? Are they kicking ass literally, like beating somebody up? Or is somebody kicking ass in some other way. Like for instance, people use the term to mean they are doing really well at something, like it is a compliment. I just don't really know what to think, because the title is so vague and I know nothing about this movie. Also, high school students shouldn't be kicking anybody's asses, so I hope this isn't a violent movie with young people fighting and setting a bad example for other youths in this world. Our society is so loose. We are definately living in the 'anything goes' generation. People have few if any standards or morals. It is okay to do what you feel, say what you feel, and be not even be accountable for it. Why are we putting curse words in movie titles anyway? If my five year old child saw the title to this movie, I wouldn't want him to repeat it! I mean I'm no prude, but I do like to keep some type of wholesome enviornment for my children.

I agree with the comments that Ashley L. makes above. There are too many references in everyday commercials, conversations, family television shows, and songs that contain sexual inuendos, violence, drinking, or vulgar language. Standards have going from requiring a married man and woman in a family television show to sleep in seperate beds to a man and a woman laying tossled in a bed together like they've just finished doing each other (you know those KY commercials I'm talking about!). The biggest influence children have are their parents, and I take great care making sure my children are sheilded from these images. But, there are some things that have popped up on screen during commercial breaks of a child's movie that I wouldn't call appropriate. That's our society today in one word...inappropriate.

  24. The first thing that comes to mind is the word "indifferent". I definately don't agree with using this type of language in the title of a movie targeted to young people by any means. However, I do feel that our society has allowed this to now be the "ordinary". There is no longer any "shock-value". It is concerning to me that this movie will be advertised in a way that promotes violence and youth defience. Our society has been open to this for some time now, and it is not suprising that these types of films are being released. This is the culture that I've grown up in. There should be certain standards in place, where movies with racy titles can only be targeted to certain age groups. As a parent, I feel like we as a society should look at what we are allowing our children to be subjected to. It is ultimately up to the parents to insure our childs safety.

Now do I think it's approaiate to have a movie with this saying " No I don't". I have two children and this lanuage is not acceptable in our home. When sayings are spoken like this. It pretty much says it's ok for the society to say and do anything. Also agreeing with Ashley how society makes it so acceptable even when it comes down to the radio and tv and how it's ok to sing about sex. Knowing that there are young children looking and listening to this. Thats why Georgia have a high rate of teen pregnancy. What's in a name. When I read what the movie was going to be about and the words kick-ass and high school, I pictured a story about a high school football team and its player and what they are faced with as individual and playing as a team. How they have to depend on each other not to get hurt and make the right plays to win the game. The word kick-ass also describes to me how much each player asserts himself to overcome those teenage years and achieve the altimate goal of becoming a team and brothers in the end.

  28. The title of this movie shows me how society views violence. While im not sure if I would say we are barbaric, some view violence as a right of passage. Fighting and standing up for what you believe in enthuses many young people. They see these things as inspirational and this may be true, but not all situations need violence to be solved. Violence does not solve violence.

  30. When I first heard the title "Kick-Ass" I imagined a young male or female in an action movie beating up arch enemies. Some can say it's negative and some positive. I think it's positive for publicity reasons.

But for today's society, it is negative. It can cause us to believe that violence is accepted. Also, it is influencing our society's adolescence.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My immediate response is that the movie will be looked down upon by a majority of the population. I think this because I think the movie's primary audience is teenagers/pre-teens and most parent's would not want their children saying ass or letting their children see a movie with that word in the title. With that being said I do think that this movie will also be a box office hit with one major reason being the controversial name. Another side on this is that their is barely any movies made anymore that do not include some sort of cursing in them, sexual language, or some sort of terms which would get a kid in trouble in school. What i am getting at here is that so many movies include so much negative language yet parents are letting their kids see these movies, simply because the title of the movie does not include a curse word in it.
What do I think this means to our society? I think it means we lost the younger population's values. What I mean by that is if a movie is being released called "Kick-Ass" then what are we teaching our children? Is it ok for them to see this movie, and that by allowing them to see this movie do we support the title and does that mean we are ok with kids cursing? One could also argue that it is just a movie title and never is telling kids to curse. That also goes with what I said earlier, just because it is in a movie title it might have less curse words then another popular movie with a cleaner title.

It would be a great comedy on a teens level even though the title is Kick Ass which is a universal saying. Everybody pretty much knows what kick ass means so know you have a movie that is BIG across the world. Nowadays when it comes to movies, they mostly consist of violence, drugs, sexual content, gangs, and teen pregnancies. When looking at that title, the first thing I thought about was violence. A high school student being the star of a movie with a title like that just says that there is a lot of violence and drama that is gonna be featured in this film. Maybe this student will be a big bully that picks on every one that is weaker than him or her. Or maybe this student is the one being picked on and is tired of it. I have never heard of a comic book with that title, but it does not surprise me that there would be one. There is too much violence in todays society and steps need to be taken to do something about it. Violence is not the answer to every thing and people need to realize it. It does not solve anything.

I disagree with Kamilla McNac. Just because Kick-Ass is a very popular saying does not mean that the movie will be big. For the parents that do care what their kids watch, the title wont be as appealing. For instance, when Troy first came out in the theaters, my friend Ashleys dad took her to see it. She was about fifteen or sixteen, but whenever they showed Brad Pitts butt, he made her get up and leave the theater, which was a little too strict really but proves that some people still do care what their children see in movies

My first reaction to the title was the thought of a poorly thought out "eye catcher." The name would most likely appeal only to the comic book junkies who invested in the comic itself, young teens, and poor taste action junkies. As far as society goes more and more garbage is being posted for all to see. It is as if people are in states of "mental regression." Although people have always had a taste for blood and violence, it seems as if the neanderthalic bloodlust is growing as movies and books depict graphic, lude imagery with greater intensities at a seemingly geometric rate as the years go by.

In response to Kenneth Smith, I agree totally with you. The way society looks at violence today is ridiculous. It does not make you a man or a women to hurt another person. People viewing violence as away of passage truly takes us back to the gladiator days. It is barbaric to think humans hurting humans is valued in society. Violence should not be valued but the spirit of human life should be valued. We all are put on this earth for a reason. Entertainment today conveys other wise.Violence should be cut back has as a form of entertainment.

  44. The name of this new movie sounds like it would be very appealing to young viewers such as ones that actually do read comic books. It may be about a geeky kid that gets bullied all the time. Then gains superpowers to finally fight back. There's nothing wrong with self defence, we say it everyday. Maybe our society is just trying to show that bullying isn't right, and trying to teach our adolescence to stand up for themselves and be the good guy. Bottom-line bullying and super heros in comic books have always been around. So to me it's just a normal past time. Our society has a lot more things to worry about what's being shown on TV or the big screen than a movie that easily could've come out in the 50's.

Yes, our society has had some changes so why not accept it and try it out. Most religous people probably won't go see it because of the title but i beleieve that they should give it a try. Humor is a wonderful thing. I have never read the comic book or saw the movie but after seeing the name of it i would like to give it a try. I grew up around cusing and what not so it ain't no big deal to me.

When I first see the title it reminds me of another teen movie like American Pie or Date Movie. From my point of view they should have done a better job at selecting a title since this is the cover of the movie and all ages see this. Today more and more curse words are heard on television as well as on radio stations as if it meant nothing. Just today I was at Best Buy and Family Guy was on one of the televisions and I know this is not the perfect age appropriate show BUT this is public television and it would be crazy to assume that just people of the age of 13 and higher are the only ones who watch it.

In response to Ashley L. I agree. When can a parent put his/her foot down and say this is to much. Parents do their best to teach kids whats right from wrong and what is appropriate language. More and more we see slips here and there from public radio and television broadcasting with an increasingly explicit sexual content, graphic violence and strong profanity in television programs.

I immediately wanted to see this movie when I saw the preview. It looked hilarious! I'm a christian and I try to be respectful and not cuss around my elders or anyone who would be offended and blah blah blah, but when a movie looks good, I want to see it. I dont care what the name of it is.
