Zereana C. 97 I think southerners have a charm and warmth about them that no one else posses. The reality television that I have seen with the southern touch to it seems to be more relatable to my own life. I think people like to see the honest nature of people especially those who seem to be family oriented and work for their livelihood. Watching the Kardashians or a show like that really irritates me personally because they don't live or work like the majority of the people that are watching them and their family values aren't in line with mine. Plus, I think the southern twang gives people a little charm.
I do agree with you about the charm and warmth of the southern and how they are family oriented. To add on to that, they are people that portray their tradition every where they go and they always want to be known for who they are and where they come from. It is interesting to be around people like that.
I agree. People rather watch someone they can relate to and feel normal around or watching. They rather see people being reckless rather than grown rich women they can't relate to because nothing in their life seems a bit familiar with normal life.
Michael L. 97 While that may be true, what makes shows like that any different from "generic" American tv shows? I don't see being family oriented and working for your livelihood to be a "Southern" trait, but more of a working middle class trait. This sort of thing also makes the shows more relatable to those not in the south, so why are the southern ones special?
Bleetan D. 96 Tho the southern are some how consider a conservative people, but for my understand and experienced from living in the country side, what mostly account for the fascination with distinct characters is their way of life. They are hard working and proud of who they are and where they are from. Most of all, they prefer tradition to abstract and are slow to adopt new theories.
Hi Darrell B. 96, this is certainly true from my own experience as well. There is a certain kind of living and values that you see in a vast majority of southerners. Along with their southern accents I think them being able to be themselves is what draws people to them.
I think one reason people like Southern characters is because they (Southerners) come across as more laid back and easy going. Even with today's shows, Southern life is depicted as simple and stress-free (when compared to other regions). When considering reality shows, those from the South (the Robertsons, for example) appear to be good natured, nice people with good hearts and strong morals, something that is missing from American society (in my opinion). When compared to other shows that demonstrate greed, lavish spending and loose morals, it is easy to see how Southern characters win the attention of viewers.
I agree with you very much because the morals and values that the southerners had is supposed to be depicted into everyday life. In the real world it is not and it is sad that we do let greed and money destroy the few good things we have in life like family, friendships and jobs.
Nick Hall 96 I think the fascination is due to the culture they have. They still live in what other people view as the past and consider them to be living life the old fashioned way. the people that hunt for food and make a living in the same way. Its not seen as "normal" anymore.
I Absolutely agree Nick, people like them because they are different and more simplistic then we are in our every day lives. Yes in some respects they are old fashion but people like this mind set.
W.Harvey90 I Absolutely agree Nick, people like them because they are different and more simplistic then we are in our every day lives. Yes in some respects they are old fashion but people like this mind set.
Kevon P, 90 Nick, I agree with you to the fullest. These traditional life skills and ways are no longer being used, therefore when they are view on television, it helps people realize that old ways still work
M.Inman 97 I believe that people are fascinated with them because rednecks are for one, fun to watch. They make you laugh and are entertaining, but they are also down to earth, and not afraid to be themselves and stand up for what they believe in. Southerners have that southern charm. I personally love Duck Dynasty because it makes you laugh. But at the end of each episode, it always has a sweet story about family, and it always ends with a prayer. I think that people can connect with them in a certain way, and that's what fascinating about them.
I agree 100%. I don't believe that people like in Duck Dynasty put on a show, they have a show for being themselves. If you look at shows like Basketball Wives, half of the women on there are NO LONGER wives, and they only hang out with each other for show/money purposes. The cast in Duck Dynasty are going to pray with or without the cameras, I'm sure they aren't perfect but they definitely are being honest and true with themselves.
W.Harvey90 I Feel that the fascination of southern redneck characters are because they are fun loving people, who just are down to earth, believe in American values, an they typically live a happier less stress life. We live in a more complex and tougher world then we did even ten years ago, However, these characters can remind us what life was like and can help unwind during our long work weeks by watching these shows. People can also personally connect with these characters and they may share the same activities as well.
William C Wade 90. I believe people find southerners fascinating for many reasons southerners can be very entertaining in many aspects, a good example will be duck dynasty. you can see how southerners can give off a comedian vibe, and give you a friendly welcoming even if you never meet them before. Southerners also "keep it real" they will speak their mind at any given moment, and i believe people find that very interesting about southerns. People also see them as breaking to days norms, because a lot of southerners still live an agricultural lifestyle.
William C Wade 90. In response to Bleetan D. 96 I agree many people find there lifestyle very fascinating because of the way southerners view and live life. People also like the fact that they have a hard working mindset rather then the majority of today's population.
I personally do not have cable, nor do i care to have it. I am not exactly familiar with these shows that were in the blogcast, nor do i know 1/3 of the people in it. People have a fascination with people they can relate to, and some have a fascination for people who are so different, that it's almost shock and awe to watch and see how other people act from different parts of the world.
You're not missing much.... One group of rednecks he left out is the cast from Honey Boo Boo. They're a hot steaming pile of mess. The only show out of all those that I watch is Duck Dynasty. I love their Christian views. Michele Smith (96)
J. Wright 90 reply to S. Acevedo 96 I agree with you on the fact that you are not missing anything by not knowing these shows and the people on them. To me they give our society a bad name . They allow these show to be shown all across the world and it make other people think that we are all like that. Some southerner are great people and will go out the way to lend a helping hand, and most work hard to get the things that they had and to have a hand few go on television and act a fool send's a really ugly picture
In my opinion, as already stated by others, southerners are more REALITY to reality tv. They actually work, and you see them for who they truly are. Comparable to these other stars that call themselves reality tv stars, they don't do anything but eat out and pick fights with each other and create these events for publicity. Southerners, we see them in their daily lives, we follow them to their commoner jobs and we see them with their family, keeping traditions, and dealing with EVERY DAY LIFE issues. No one wants to keep up with something that doesn't hit home for them, you see how they overcome, not situations that are made up creating a false hope for our world and telling our children it's okay to be spoiled, and keep up with the Jones, and like the world owes them something. Just my opinion.
Michele Smith (96) I agree with the other people that talk about the charm that southerners have. We're very charming people... But, I also think that tv gives us a bad reputation of being knuckle dragging inbred morons. Take the show Honey Boo Boo for instants. Those people are like watching a train wreck. It's ugly, but you can't stop watching it. I'm glad shows like Duck Dynast are out there. While most of that is fake, it's nice to see the more laid back vibe of the south.
I think being a southerner myself that's it all about how we choose to carry ourselves before the world. When it comes to these t.v. reality shows the more they can make themselves look like fools the more people will watch them. Most southerner are hard working and carry a high set of family values then those seen on t.v. J. Wright 90
I agree about reality TV personalities acting like fools to gain ratings. I think this applies to all reality TV shows. I personally do not care for reality TV generally, the exception being the DIY shows. But even those have people acting stupid at times. That being said, I do believe that Duck Dynasty (the little that I know) may help give others around the country a more positive view of Southerners. Now, if we could just stop making National news for being weather idiots and cheating on tests . . .
Chris W. 97 in response to Chris M. 97 I agree that it applies to all reality TV shows. When it comes down to it, it's all about ratings. And while I personally do not care for Duck Dynasty, it does represent Southerners better than, say, Buckwild.
People love watching southerners. In the past we have been the center of controversy because we weren't afraid to speak our minds. Some people see that as a lack of manners. Some as a bounty of courage. Either way you look at it we still werent afraid to do what we thought was right. Now im not saying we were always right. But we thought we were. We wouldn't compromise. We could set our minds to something and with a good bit of hard work we could do it. We showed that on our early tv. But now people want to see what weve become. Duck Dynasty is a strong view of that. However there are still shows like Party Down South that show the crazy side. The real reason everyone wants to watch us is because were different.
A. Sheffield 96 I'm not sure how country people go the stereotype of being a hillbilly of redneck. I think a long time ago people that lived in the country were hardworking, and maybe a little dumb. However, the stereotypes are what are portrayed on the tv shows. There is a new show called party down south and it is all about drinking. I know good and well that country people are not the only ones that drink.
Wright 90 reply to Sheffield 96. That's true but do you have to go in national television and made a totally fool of yourself for a $$? I heard that they have a new show Hollywood Hillbillies on cable and the way these people act, should make you want to find them and hit them in the head a drag them back to the backwoods of the South.
Robert C. 88 I believe that the obsession with southern culture comes from a desire to see something relatable on television. Most people cannot relate to the brilliant scholarly work of ‘Jersey Shore’ or the introspective depth of ‘The Real House Wife’s of Wherever’, but they may be able to relate to the fun-loving family atmosphere that is cultivated in ‘Duck Dynasty’. People like to see something that they can either relate to, or that they aspire to be like. Many people might see these show as the way that they want their life to be, such as the wholesome simplicity of the Andy Griffin show. I believe it is mostly about the content of these show. The fact that the people are not rich (or at least don’t present themselves as rich), and they are presented as normal everyday people is usually the biggest selling point. It is not often that rich southerns are presented in the in our culture, aside from things like ‘Gone with the Wind’ or the occasional William Faulkner novel. This is mostly because people cannot relate to the rich aristocracy that a character such as Scarlet grew up in. This desire for simplicity can probably help explain the popularity of contemporary country music. People can relate to Garth Brooks and Jason Aldean, talking about hard work, getting drunk and having a good time. While most middle class older people, who make up a great deal of the television viewing audience, don’t relate to the interestingly phrased ideas of one Lil’ Wanye, or the high-mindedness of an actual good band like Tv on the Radio. Either way I despise both reality television and contemporary country music, so I don’t get the attraction at all. Sorry if you like either of those things, it’s just not for me.
Simone S. 97 I totally agree I even used some of the same wordings, that's funny. You are very right though people find comfort in what they can relate to. Also people like to see example of the simplicity they wish they had in their lives.
Chelsea N.90 Robert C.88 I agree with you. Although there are some popular shows that reveal a higher class of life such as "Jersey Shore", "The Kardashians", and even "Desperate Housewives" these are all fantasy shows that do not show a side of life that is relate-able to most of the American population. People do enjoy seeing a lifestyle that they are not familiar with other than their own, but more often than not they want to see what they are familiar with. This goes with the etch to be accepted and to feel like they are experiencing what the rest of the world experiences on a day-to-day experience. Including the fact that what they see is on television, it makes people feel they are not too far away from reality.
Robert C. in response to Chris Morgan I agree, people probably like to see others having a good time. They probably like to see the laid back fun atmosphere that is presented in many shows about the south. That is a very good point.
Simone S. 97 I believe people watch the "red neck" shows more because they can relate. Those shows are based more on hardworking middle class citizens with everyday problems. In shows like The House Wives of where ever it may nice to watch for entertainment sometime, but if others are anything like me this is not a nightly routine. I think those house wives do not represent the majority and their problems. So sometimes they can even be a little annoying.
Veronica E. 97 in response to Simone S. 97 I agree, I think most people can relate and want to watch these shows for enjoyment. Shows like The House Wives are mostly about drama and most people are trying to avoid that. Shows like the Andy Griffith and Duck Dynasty are heartfelt people in everyday life.
TB 96 I think the fascination with the southern lifestyle is because the shows represent the south in the most exaggerated way which other people see as true reality and people believe that is how all southerners act. I hate duck dynasty and shows just like it because it is stereotyping all the people that live in the south. People are so fascinated because they see people wearing different clothes like boots and daisy dukes and see people being dumb by having trucks pull couches while people are sitting on the couch. People are also enjoying the accent and muddy dirty people but I hate all of that. Not everyone down here has an accent, dress in camo, or go mudding and duck hunting. It's just like honey boo boo, people are wanting to watch people who are stupid and embarrassing and that's how I think a lot of people view southern based shows and think when they watch them. People find this entertaining that people actually live this way.
I see your point and can think that some people do think about us in the south like that but they are surprised when they see the truth of how we really are. Now I also think they wish that their life was like this and they had land all around their house and that they weren't confined into living in apartments or duplexes in the cities.
Megan Evans 69 Southern fascination appeals to the American dream. The terms southern gentleman and Georgia peaches take on a tone of sophistication. Still images of large houses on lots of land like the plantations appeal to people as well. The imagery of white southerners come from back when cotton plantations were still around. Although I dont watch the tv shows that were mentioned they seem to stereotype us and contradict the sophistication of us. The world just donest know what to expect from the south and that keeps it entertaining.
Most people want a life where they are free to roam about and not have to worry about things like bills, work, and other day to day task. I think its because Southern fascination depicts such a simple life where there is no crime, its always you, your family , and your friends having a good time with the simple stuff in life. Your not worried about whats going on in the outside world.
Veronica E. 97 I think the feeling of being closely resembled is what accounts most for the fascination of the southern characters. A lot of people in the south can relate to most of these people. They like to see the way people are on these shows and enjoy watching them. Most of the shows have good intentions while others not so much.
Cherish S. 97 I think the fascination with southern shows is that it is mostly down to earth people who are honest. Duck Dynasty is one of my favorite shows. They show good family values and keep their faith. I am big into my faith and I enjoy seeing how much they express their faith.
Kelsey 96 we live in Georgia it is in the southern part of the united states. we love the south and so we tend to show people how life is down here although, the media takes a comedic point of view to the way they think the south is.
Cherish S. 97 in response to Veronica E. 97 I could not agree more that a lot of people relate to the people on southern shows. The southern people are very entertaining. There are some shows out there that are too wild for people but shows like Duck Dynasty are good southern people with great family values.
I will agree with above comments by saying that we live in the south, so people can relate and are fascinated what different "good ole boys" do with their lives. There are several shows about southerners like duck dynasty, buck wild, that rodeo reality show, party down south, etc. People just like to watch people do dumb things or to be amazed about the latest sub cultures. Even though most of the southerner shows are about partying and following the guidelines of the new slang word of "YOLO."
Marganette PL 90 I do not watch shows unless it is educative. Having to go to school and work at the same time, plus doing household work, I do not have much time for TV. So I do not have a clue about these shows. But I know one thing, people are fascinated with shows that are interesting and captivating. What is interesting for me may not be for others, so I can conclude that the southerners have something for all type of person which is why people are fascinated with them.
Chris W. 97 People watch these shows because it feels comfortable to them. They see these characters who, a lot of the time, represent the Southern stereotype i.e. strong family values, religion and just tradition, really. Even if they don't necessarily relate to people who live in the south, they subconsciously long for theses values. Also, some people may watch these shows to make themselves feel better about their own lives. Not all of these shows depict southerners in the best light.
I watched the whole video a couple of times and I couldn't figure out what was all about. I notice that they were talking about the old southerner shows and new shows like Desperate House Wives, but still shows that I wouldn't invest my time on them. although I agree that old shows were much better than today's shows because they were more family oriented. Today all the shows are about sex, drugs and alcohol. I don't let my kids watch tv for that reason. I am very busy all the times, I have a full time job, school work and taking care of the kids I don't have time to waste watching the garbage they show in tv these days. The Dock Dynasty I really don't know what that is but doesn't look very attractive to my eyes.

KatelynN97:The fascination with Southern reality tv shows can be contributed to the fact that its a subculture with unique views and characteristics. People enjoy being around and experiencing life with people that hold similar values to them. Most of the people in the South are family oriented and Christian. Ergo, they enjoy Christian family shows such as Duck Dynasty. I feel that America has two extreme cultures emerging. We have the wild and crazy, no boundaries young adults rebelling and testing what is socially acceptable, Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga for example. On the other end we have Phil, standing by his Christian beliefs. Showing American family men that its ok to hold on to our religion in this time of social reform. Southern shows, such as Honey Boo Boo and Swamp people are also showing a different face of the Southern region. It is a diverse subculture that most people either find fascinating or they find that they can relate to what they are watching.
KatelynN97 in response to Simone S97: I agree with you! Middle class Americans who are supporting families need something to watch. I think at some point, the mass media will want to get back to the roots of culture, the family. That's where children acquire their tastes and values. When they become adults they will be targeted in commercials and marketing based on those tastes that have been acquired. Family is where everything begins.
Lucy k.84 Southerners love shows that relate to how they live. They choose shows that closely reflect how they live. They watch shows like honey boo and duck dynasty not only because their are funny but because it reminds them of their own lives.Southerners ought to be proud of their culture and lifestyle the same way am proud of mine.I regularly watch shows from my country o keep in touch with my culture and lifestyle.
Darian P.(90) in response to Katelyn N (97) I think it is amazing that these shows take you in to the reality of southern people to show they're different beliefs and aspects. Shows such as Honey Boo, Duck Dynasty. I have recently been watching shows such as Appalachian Outlaws, Gold Rush, Klondike and it is vey interesting to learn outside of the normal viewing of a southern or American life. I think sometimes people should go outside of they're normal poverty mindset and look into or at the different reality of people around them
Logan C. 64 The appeal of the "southern lifestyle" is one of simplicity and happiness. What do all those shows you listed have in common? 'Simple' folk working through life and having fun. Shows about silly southern cops solving crimes appeals more to the inner child than shows about rich housewives struggling to plan a party. We all secretly want a life of simplicity and fun, at least at the core.
I believe that the fascination with shows like Duck Dynasty and Swamp People, for the most part can be contributed to two main factors: familiarity, and extreme stereo types. People within the southern culture can relate directly or indirectly, through people they know, to characters like Sye from Duck Dynasty. People outside of the Southern culture are fascinated with the extreme and foreign stereotypes that are presented in such shows
Shannon P. 90 Throughout American history there has always been a sort of fascination and fixation on extreme lifestyles in our country. Shows that not only feature southern fundamentals, but anything that does not fit Hollywood’s norms, (e.g. wearing clothes from Gucci and spending days sitting around the beach, drinking in a Jacuzzi and partying with 10/10 models) such as Alaska State Troopers or Hardcore Pawn, have had huge success. The interest in southern tradition specifically may be attributed to many contributors. (1) Despite what the media tells us, I think there is an appreciation for realness in our society. In the south there are hardly any limits to the blatant honesty and sometimes harsh truths (which, let’s be really honest here, are probably things that need to be said) that we tell without reservation or hesitation. (2) Humor is an entirely different game in the south. From ideas of funny pranks such as the classic cow tipping, to comedic performers who nail the ideals and distinctive personalities of the ‘down-home’ such as Larry the Cable Guy, southern humor is a class of its own. The accent in itself is often an object of jokes and stand-up comedy performances. (3) Two words: Southern charm. The south is full of people as sweet as the peaches they grow. Who with a soul can resist the warm smiles and mamma-taught, daddy-enforced manners the southern population always seems to offer? The classic homemade lemonade with dinner, barefoot summer, and front-porch swingin’ policies may seem like a generic stereotype, but have proven to be a popular item of interest in modern American society.
AR 97 The southern perspective has always been a hilarious thing to see. It's been in entertainment for the main fact that they fit these stereo types of people of the south. From the accent to the unnecessary wild behavior that society has created to watch broadcasted on television is simply to get a laugh out of. Now there is something about watching a southern show and feeling somewhat of a "comfortable" or "at home feeling" that keeps people loving that aspect in entertainment. They would rather laughing and feeling a sense of comfortability watching red necks than watching prissy stuck up people they can't really relate with.
Courtney R.97 in response to Akeyla R.97 I completely agree that there is just a 'comfort' about watching a southern character (maybe because I'm a Georgia native), that you don't find in other characters. I would much rather sit back and enjoy some humor, adventure and moral, than watch the fast pace and harsh personalities of a city life drama.
Despite some of my friends telling me we "Southerners" are slow, I do belief the Southerners just show, talk and act to their belief. Just like many of you, I have not watched these shows but have had of them. In fact the Duck Dynasty caught my attention when they had some controversy. To me this show represents the faith and culture that the Southerners belief in.
I believe that what accounts for the fascination of Southern characters is that the people in the south can relate. Just like in Duck Dynasty it shows good values and beliefs. I believe that it also relates to the simple life and how southerners put on a great charm. They are also on television because most Southerners like myself do not like shows that have a lot of money or fashion.
Shannon P. 90 @ M.Inman 97 Duck Dynasty is relatable, but it also is an exaggerated version of the southern lifestyle. Although hunting and twang-y accents are staples of the culture, the average people are not owners of wealthy companies and million dollar southern belle mansions. In comparison to standard reality TV shows, Duck Dynasty brings cute accents and good manners to the table, but the fundamentals of the ‘reality’ part of the situation are the same; wealthy people living exciting lives and doing things most people can’t afford.
A. Murphy 96 I think that rednecks may seem interesting to others because they can be controversial. They tend to be very open, honest, comfortable, and wild, which can all be very entertaining.
Courtney R.97 I think that a very prominent southern character will always be enjoyed. Being away from the hustle and bustle of the city allows you to be more in touch with nature which grounds you. I think the slower pace and sense of community makes people happier and with out all the city's distractions, one is able to be at ease, have a sense of humor and adventure. The southern character is usually humble and that can be charming.
Don't really know how to respond to that. I'm just going to say that I believe its the way they sound when they talk and that there so different from any other part of the US, maybe even the world. As I quest maybe its there relaxed state of dealing with the heat and taking easy and seeing the humor in things.
Valrika L. 90 Pondering the question given to me, I humbly believe the fascination of the southern characters betrayed in the past, present, and future to be the culture they've accustomed themselves to. It's the warmth and charm in which they possess whom no one else holds. Watching the video, I was familiar with some of the southern television shows shown that reminded me what being a southerner was all about. People love seeing the honest nature of others especially those who are highly family oriented as well as diligently hard workers for their livelihood. They reside present still in what society views as the old days and consider them to be living life just the same, old fashionable. All this without a single care in the world of what others unfamiliar with their lifestyle think.
Janetta C. 96 I think people are fascinated by southern characters because they are real men and women leading real lives. Southern people are laid back and life in the south is a slower pace. Southerns are proud of who they are and not afraid to show it, and not worried about what everyone eles is thinking. They are about families and eating dinner together and spending time together. Everyone loves a southern accent, and southern charm. I enjoy watching Duck Dynasty and Swamp people, and American Hoggers. They are all TV reality shows about families and they are down to earth people you can relate to. I grew up watching Gomer Pyle and Beverly hillbillies, and Green Acres. There are so many people today that have dysfunctional families and never spend any time together, so it is nice to see a show that puts family first.
Sarah M 97 I completely agree with you. The southerner's do not care about people's view towards them and they have a laid back life settings. And I love the fact that they are proud of who they are.
Sarah M 97 I think the southerners are great and loving people. They have a slow pace settings. They believe in family and they have a good sense of belonging when it comes to the aspect of reality TV shows. They tend to present themselves sort of low by acting crazy in a ways that would make people laugh. By doing so, people take them for granted. But I love the fact that they have good morals in the shows and they tend to show people their belief in strong family bond. I think all this factors captivate people about the southerners.
Madeline C. in response to Sarah M. Hey there Sarah! I was born and raised in a town very close to Detroit, MI, and I have to say that the people here are 100% different. Like you said, they are great and loving people, if a little slow paced...maybe more than a little. I believe many people do take them for granted, but I would never trade the people in Ellijay for the people in Detroit. I also am not about to paint my face camo and go shopping for a rifle, but I'm glad to be here.
Madeline C. 97 As I think about how to answer this question, I am sitting here staring at my welcome mat. It is a picture of Phil from Duck Dynasty with the words, "Happy happy happy" written on it. Duck Dynasty is a show that I hate that love, mostly because watching these "rednecks" makes me feel better about myself, which in turn makes me feel horrible for thinking that in the first place. I think the fascination with southern characters comes from their refreshing honesty. Too many shows, whether reality or not, are about secrets, lying, backstabbing, cheating, you get the picture. Good 'ol Boys are seen as generally good-mannered young men who occasionally act like scoundrels. What's not to love? They have good morals, good family ties, and good intentions, though not all act in a way most of us would call "appropriate" in public. So while I may not agree with everything I see in Duck Dynasty, I can appreciate their love for their family and the lengths they will go through to see that they are taken care of.
I completely agree. I think it has to do with how real the characters seem (even though it's still a TV show). There's something about their honesty that I think draws people in.
Tiffany W. 96 I believe people like watching southerners on TV because in some ways they are more relatable. Southerners are usually down to earth and not afraid to be themselves in front of the camera. Another big reason is that they are hilarious to watch! They say some of the funniest things and the way they say certain things is also entertaining.
I think their success is largely attributed to the fact that there seems to be something about them that the American public can relate to. Maybe not everything about them, but something in their "down to earth" personalities makes people feel as if they have something in common with these strangers. Also, it could have to do with the fact that America is a fairly young country and these southern stars who seem to stick to the way things used to be give us a taste of our roots and the way things used to be (good or bad).
Also this is something that's different from all other regions in many ways. You can look at southerners as people who really work together when a disaster happens or walking down the side walk to say "excuse me".
Chris G. 95 I think that the humor and that some people can relate to these southern characters is what causes the fascination. I watch Duck Dynasty and me along with a large number of people are fascinated by it and find it hilarious.
I think people are drawn to people of a southern diaspora, because there is a certain air about them that exudes earthiness. They (usually) aren't about the drama and just like to have fun. They seem to love their families and enjoy spending time with them and that is an attractive quality. Plus what beats southern hospitality. Look at how everyone banned together during the ice storm helping each other out. In today's world you don't experience that much so people cling to the southern stereotypes as their little piece of the good ol' days.
Salome N response to Tiffany William ' 97 I think only United States have unique cultures, that can not found anywhere also around the world. Most of the countries they copy and paste United States cultures because is the dominant in the world.
Ann L. 97 in response to Marganette pl. 90 Hey Marganette! just like you I do have so much on my plate that I rarely have time to watch shows. Its true people are fascinated with shows that are interesting to them but which would be vice versa to others.
I believe as being a southerner, people do tend to look at the different aspects of life. The way people see southerners as polite and well mannered people who live out on the country side. We also do not have cities like New York and the populations is much less. Also the scenery in a broad way is much much different than the other regions. Also the south hold more historic meanings and also closer to more of the traditional "hey lets go to Florida, or the beach". As many people would say that southerners are for brothers and sisters.
Kim S 90 I think the fascination with southern characters comes from their attitudes. They do not care what people think of the actions they do. They are honest to themselves and everyone around them. I was born and have been raised in the south and most of the "stereotypes" of "rednecks" is true and I see that in me and my family. Also, southerners can be fascinating in how they are able to find things outdoors to do for fun and being able to fix just about anything that's broke. They are very independent.
I agree with your statement Kim. Southern charters really do have a strong attitude and do what they want 99% of the time. When they choose to do something they do not hold back. They are very strong willing people.
I think that the fascination with southern characters is the way they might carry themselves. Personality has a lot to do with attitude. Most of their attitude came from hard work growing up that people could relate to. Now, I grew up in Georgia but technically not the "south". When I went to live there for a year at my first year of college it was very country. They all dressed the same and did the same activities and hobbies. The term "rednecks" come to my head meaning people who were from the south that were only used to their own lifestyle and were very strict on others if it was not the same. They were very handy and could please almost anyone with their charm . I believe that is why the fascination of them grew generation upon generation and is still growing in today's world not only in t.v, but in real society. Their acts are rubbing off in good ways on other people .
I believe that the fascination with southern characters could be they way they act compared to most people. Duck Dynasty us by far my favorite show. I never miss a episode. I think what makes it so interesting is the brothers really don't care about much at all. They rarely do their work and they rarely do what are told. If I would not to do my class work or do what my mom says I would fail as well as get in deep trouble with my mom! As in the Duck Dynasty TV show they make it entertaining because it isn't really reality for most people the way they act. The way they act is quite amusing and entertaining. Also they are very wealthy and they don't spend their money on everything. They are high class rednecks. I believe this goes for any southern TV shows not just for my preferred favorite.
I think the video representation was about cultural variation with the time. People from past to present have changed a lot due to the changes of living. In the present people are so much demanding for big television and clear picture of which; in the past they were very comfortable watching black and white screen additional to that small screen. Today's people are understanding life better than in the past and this is the reason why there was a big difference on the clip between the past and the present. As the time varies the cultures change and make people change their ways of living
I think that the fascination with distinctly southern characters is the fact that we are very charming people, we are down to earth, we like to have fun, we express our religion, we like to work hard, and most of the time well mannered people. I think that people like to watch shows about the south because the shows are usually about hardworking people trying to do what they can to help their family survive. In life, it is all about your family. One show that I like to watch is Swamp People. It shows how dedicated that those people are dedicated to their families. They would do anything for them. I mean I could not imagine killing alligators for a living, but they do it and make it look easy. I also like how shows will show their religion. One show that comes to mind here is Duck Dynasty. I love watching that show, and I love the fact that they will pray at the end of every show. There need to be more shows like this. Duck Dynasty also shows the other traits I have mentioned above. I can not wait to watch Duck Dynasty to see what they are going to do next, or more like what Uncle Si is going to do next. There are some shows that do make us look bad. One show that comes to my mind is that Honey Boo Boo show. I personally have never watched, but I did see an interview where the child was just obnoxious. She was completely disrespectful to the host, and her mamma let her do it. If I would have done what I saw in the interview, I would have had to answer to my mamma and my daddy. It would have not been pretty either. All in all there are a couple of shows that do make us look bad, but there are some that show how most of us are. That would be to work hard to provide for our family.

I totally agree with you. I believe that they watch the shows because people from the south are more easily to relate to. It is also very true that southerns are down to earth, and don't care what they look like in front of a camera. I also believe that people find what we say funny, and love our accents.
Isabel Lopez 96 I think that people like watching this shows because they are pretty funny. I do not what them as much but i have watch them like twice and they have me cracking up. Southerners are just really open and wild. It looks like they just do not care what other people think, and they do what ever they want.
I believe that, the southerners don't care with what others says about them. Also, people like to watch these shows because they find it to be funny and serves as an entertainment for them. It also depend on the way they are broadcasted and acting. Others are also known through their attitudes.
HCantrell96 I think that Southerners are often stereotyped to be loud and carefree from what others say and think about them. With this thought in mind, I could see where southern characters would be more entertaining because no one ever knows what to expect them to say or do.
I believe that people are fascinated with Southern characters simply because of curiosity. To elaborate, a large portion of the U.S. does not live the lifestyle portrayed in shows like Duck Dynasty and are interested in finding out how it really works. Also, it seems that Southern characters are bold and straightforward about what they believe so that people never question where they stand, even to the point of the situation everyone saw recently with the Duck Dynasty member. His somewhat offensive statements did not hurt their ratings as some might expect, but it actually increased interest in the show because people felt compelled to see if certain stereotypes are true about a lifestyle unfamiliar to them.
Kevon P, 90 Unlike many other reality television shows, southern shows exhibit real life and hard work. Shows now a days, show the spoiled lives of children, where as some southern shows remind you of the old days. They say what they mean, and mean exactly what they same. They also exhibit family morals and traditions which are much needed in today's world/
Heather P. 97 in response to Kevin P. 90 I agree that southern shows exhibit real life. Most of us can relate to a simple life as opposed to a life style of the rich and famous.
I believe people are fascinated with a southern redneck simply because its funny. The way we do things, how we speak, our thought process, it's all sort of a big joke. The simplicity of a good old southern boy was what many wished they had. A carefree life with quirky talents was so thrilling. I love to watch it all because it feel like home! Its always funny to see!
Chris G. 95 The humor is what attracts people to these southern characters. The simple fact that they are funny is what causes the fascination in my opinion.
I have to agree with Michele Smith on the Honey Boo Boo comment that in watching that show it makes southerners look like a bunch of redneck fools. Being that I have a deep southern accent, and I was raised on a farm in Rome, GA, when I moved to Atlanta and started working in Sandy Springs the vet I worked for dubbed me Boo Boo because another girl in the clinic had the same name as I. I was not amused in the least. Shanah E. 97
I think that people can and want to relate more to Southern style reality shows. Those are the only ones that or show the true meaning of family unit and love and support. You get the drama and fighting with the housewives, same with the dating shows, competition and betrayal with Survivor, cussing and drugs with Intervention, and the list goes on. Granted none of the shows are perfect and that's what makes the rating skyrocket, but with the Southern feel of hospitality, family, and warmth you feel like you are a part of their family...or at least you want to be and that keeps you coming back for more week after week.
Heather P. 97 I feel there are many factors that account for the fascination with southern characters and southern TV programs. One factor is the fact that many people can identify and relate to southern characters. Most southerns live a life of simplicity, a realistic life compared to the rich and famous. This lifestyle led by southerners allows people to feel a connection. As we know, the majority of us do not own 10% of the nation; therefore, we see these southern characters as being like us. A lot of people like to "belong" to a specific group, and this connection gives people that feeling. Another factor that accounts for the fascination is the humbleness shown by some southerners. I feel that people in general like to do good. Many southerns exemplify this characteristic, and it makes others feel good. Of course I am grateful for my southern upbringing, but I have a strong desire to travel abroad, and experience other surroundings.
Many of the tv shows have many characteristics and characters that are from the South. They show the South of the shows that they are laid back, dont have to worry about drugs, gangs, and cops coming by your house every single minute. Just like in the real life world most people say Southern people have a great charm and they open doors for other people, they help someone when they are lost, and even wave to you when your driving on the road. I am glad that I was born and raised in the south because we do have a lot of great morals.
Chris G. 95 I think that many people are fascinated by southern characters because the things they do and say are funny to some people. Also most that live in the south can relate to these people in some way or another. I know that i will always be fascinated with people i can relate to whether its positive or negative. People tend to like other that are like them in a way.
Fatmata D 90 i think people are fascinated with the southern characters because our way of life. most southern have a strong accent and uses world that most people would not undertsand we have a way of shorten our words. As since there is noting bout land and woods compared to the north. most people go hunting for animals and would eat them and use the rest of there body for others things to make.
Michael Lee 97 I believe the fascination around "distinctly southern characters" comes -actually- from the fact that it's not something very common in the rest of the united states. Compared to other sections of America not many people act the way people do here, let alone sound like people do here. In recent times most every show involving southern characters has been extremely comical, with a few exceptions like the Closer, so it seems that "The Good Ol' Boys" are quite humorous to the rest of the world!
I have lived all over the east coast and as i grow older i see things shifting more to a southern lifestyle. whether they see it on TV, Music, videos etc. they want to be apart of it. most people assume since the show is made in the south its politic free. as oppose to it being made in New York or L.A. people like to label that hollywood. most people have the sense of the south is doing the right thing by keeping it simplistic
Austin T. 96 I think the fascination with Southerners comes from the fact that there is no other place in the world where people are raised, taught, and act like Southerners. Southerners are raised to treat elders with respect and to help those in need. They are usually taught starting at a very young age how to live off the land. But they also have a wild side to them that I think is what make people so attracted to watching their shows.
Lucy k.84. I think that each place has its unique customs and traditions. For instance, the southerners have their dialect which attracts viewers to their shows.I personally cannot relate to the southern shows because i was not raised here neither am i familiar with the environment. If i was, no doubt i would be excited because i behave the same when watching those from my region.
Southerners are the best people pretty much. The south in itself is a great place just the good old charm that welcomes you with every house in the south. People love us the most because we are raised with respect for our elders and our dialect is distinctive to our region
Salome N 97 I think the video representation was about cultural variation with the time. People from past to present have changed a lot due to the changes of living. Savannah T Honestly I think overall just shows are shows, but I feel like they make southern people seem more warm and caring when in reality not every southern person is that way. Yes there are real wholesome southerners but there are also the same majority of nasty people. Same with the "richy rich" Yes from what we see the rich are snobs and rude but that's the only part that the television want us to see because it starts publicity but just like in the south there are truly warm hearted rich people and there are rude southern people.
Zereana C. 97
ReplyDeleteI think southerners have a charm and warmth about them that no one else posses.
In response to Zerena C. 97
DeleteI do agree with you about the charm and warmth of the southern and how they are family oriented.
DeleteMichael L. 97
DeleteWhile that may be true, what makes shows like that any different from "generic" American tv shows? I don't see being family oriented and working for your livelihood to be a "Southern" trait, but more of a working middle class trait. This sort of thing also makes the shows more relatable to those not in the south, so why are the southern ones special?
Bleetan D. 96
ReplyDeleteTho the southern are some how consider a conservative people, but for my understand and experienced from living in the country side, what mostly account for the fascination with distinct characters is their way of life.
DeleteI think one reason people like Southern characters is because they (Southerners) come across as more laid back and easy going.
ReplyDeleteAda Ohanu Online 97 in response to Chris Morgan
DeleteI agree with you very much because the morals and values that the southerners had is supposed to be depicted into everyday life. In the real world it is not and it is sad that we do let greed and money destroy the few good things we have in life like family, friendships and jobs.
Nick Hall 96
ReplyDeleteI think the fascination is due to the culture they have.
DeleteW.Harvey90
DeleteI Absolutely agree Nick, people like them because they are different and more simplistic then we are in our every day lives. Yes in some respects they are old fashion but people like this mind set.
Kevon P, 90
DeleteNick, I agree with you to the fullest. These traditional life skills and ways are no longer being used, therefore when they are view on television, it helps people realize that old ways still work
M.Inman 97
ReplyDeleteI believe that people are fascinated with them because rednecks are for one, fun to watch.
DeleteW.Harvey90
ReplyDeleteI Feel that the fascination of southern redneck characters are because they are fun loving people, who just are down to earth, believe in American values, an they typically live a happier less stress life. We live in a more complex and tougher world then we did even ten years ago, However, these characters can remind us what life was like and can help unwind during our long work weeks by watching these shows. People can also personally connect with these characters and they may share the same activities as well.
William C Wade 90.
ReplyDeleteI believe people find southerners fascinating for many reasons southerners can be very entertaining in many aspects, a good example will be duck dynasty. you can see how southerners can give off a comedian vibe, and give you a friendly welcoming even if you never meet them before. Southerners also "keep it real" they will speak their mind at any given moment, and i believe people find that very interesting about southerns. People also see them as breaking to days norms, because a lot of southerners still live an agricultural lifestyle.
William C Wade 90. In response to Bleetan D. 96
ReplyDeleteI agree many people find there lifestyle very fascinating because of the way southerners view and live life. People also like the fact that they have a hard working mindset rather then the majority of today's population.
shantal acevedo 40796
ReplyDeleteI personally do not have cable, nor do i care to have it.
DeleteMichele Smith (96)
DeleteIn my opinion, as already stated by others, southerners are more REALITY to reality tv.
ReplyDeleteMichele Smith (96)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the other people that talk about the charm that southerners have.
Greetings! You are spot on with the Honey Boo Boo comments. I saw 5 minutes and was horrified as a Southerner.
DeleteTom LaPorte
I think being a southerner myself that's it all about how we choose to carry ourselves before the world. When it comes to these t.v. reality shows the more they can make themselves look like fools the more people will watch them. Most southerner are hard working and carry a high set of family values then those seen on t.v.

DeleteI agree about reality TV personalities acting like fools to gain ratings.
DeleteI agree that it applies to all reality TV shows.
ReplyDeleteA. Sheffield 96
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how country people go the stereotype of being a hillbilly of redneck.
DeleteRobert C. 88
ReplyDeleteI believe that the obsession with southern culture comes from a desire to see something relatable on television.
Simone S. 97
DeleteI totally agree I even used some of the same wordings, that's funny. You are very right though people find comfort in what they can relate to. Also people like to see example of the simplicity they wish they had in their lives.
Chelsea N.90
DeleteRobert C.88
I agree with you.
Robert C. in response to Chris Morgan
ReplyDeleteI agree, people probably like to see others having a good time. They probably like to see the laid back fun atmosphere that is presented in many shows about the south. That is a very good point.
Simone S. 97
ReplyDeleteI believe people watch the "red neck" shows more because they can relate.
DeleteI agree, I think most people can relate and want to watch these shows for enjoyment. Shows like The House Wives are mostly about drama and most people are trying to avoid that. Shows like the Andy Griffith and Duck Dynasty are heartfelt people in everyday life.
TB 96
ReplyDeleteI think the fascination with the southern lifestyle is because the shows represent the south in the most exaggerated way which other people see as true reality and people believe that is how all southerners act.
DeleteMegan Evans 69
ReplyDeleteSouthern fascination appeals to the American dream.
ReplyDeleteVeronica E. 97
ReplyDeleteI think the feeling of being closely resembled is what accounts most for the fascination of the southern characters. A lot of people in the south can relate to most of these people. They like to see the way people are on these shows and enjoy watching them. Most of the shows have good intentions while others not so much.
Cherish S. 97
ReplyDeleteI think the fascination with southern shows is that it is mostly down to earth people who are honest. Duck Dynasty is one of my favorite shows. They show good family values and keep their faith. I am big into my faith and I enjoy seeing how much they express their faith.

ReplyDeletewe live in Georgia it is in the southern part of the united states. we love the south and so we tend to show people how life is down here although, the media takes a comedic point of view to the way they think the south is.
Cherish S. 97 in response to Veronica E. 97 I could not agree more that a lot of people relate to the people on southern shows. The southern people are very entertaining. There are some shows out there that are too wild for people but shows like Duck Dynasty are good southern people with great family values.
ReplyDeleteJarrett Morris 96
ReplyDeleteI will agree with above comments by saying that we live in the south, so people can relate and are fascinated what different "good ole boys" do with their lives.

ReplyDeleteI do not watch shows unless it is educative.
Chris W. 97
ReplyDeletePeople watch these shows because it feels comfortable to them.
ReplyDeleteI notice that they were talking about the old southerner shows and new shows like Desperate House Wives, but still shows that I wouldn't invest my time on them. although I agree that old shows were much better than today's shows because they were more family oriented.

ReplyDeleteKatelynN97 in response to Simone S97: I agree with you!

DeleteSoutherners love shows that relate to how they live.
I think sometimes people should go outside of they're normal poverty mindset and look into or at the different reality of people around them
ReplyDeleteLogan C. 64
ReplyDeleteThe appeal of the "southern lifestyle" is one of simplicity and happiness.
People outside of the Southern culture are fascinated with the extreme and foreign stereotypes that are presented in such shows
ReplyDeleteShannon P. 90
ReplyDeleteThroughout American history there has always been a sort of fascination and fixation on extreme lifestyles in our country.

ReplyDeleteThe southern perspective has always been a hilarious thing to see.
Courtney R.97 in response to Akeyla R.97
DeleteI completely agree that there is just a 'comfort' about watching a southern character (maybe because I'm a Georgia native), that you don't find in other characters. I would much rather sit back and enjoy some humor, adventure and moral, than watch the fast pace and harsh personalities of a city life drama.
Ann L. 97
ReplyDeleteDespite some of my friends telling me we "Southerners" are slow, I do belief the Southerners just show, talk and act to their belief. Just like many of you, I have not watched these shows but have had of them. In fact the Duck Dynasty caught my attention when they had some controversy. To me this show represents the faith and culture that the Southerners belief in.
Meredith J. 96
ReplyDeleteI believe that what accounts for the fascination of Southern characters is that the people in the south can relate. Just like in Duck Dynasty it shows good values and beliefs. I believe that it also relates to the simple life and how southerners put on a great charm. They are also on television because most Southerners like myself do not like shows that have a lot of money or fashion.
Shannon P. 90
ReplyDelete@ M.Inman 97 Duck Dynasty is relatable, but it also is an exaggerated version of the southern lifestyle.
A. Murphy 96
ReplyDeleteI think that rednecks may seem interesting to others because they can be controversial. They tend to be very open, honest, comfortable, and wild, which can all be very entertaining.
Courtney R.97
ReplyDeleteI think that a very prominent southern character will always be enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteValrika L. 90
ReplyDeletePondering the question given to me, I humbly believe the fascination of the southern characters betrayed in the past, present, and future to be the culture they've accustomed themselves to.
Janetta C. 96
DeleteI think people are fascinated by southern characters because they are real men and women leading real lives.
Sarah M 97
DeleteI completely agree with you. The southerner's do not care about people's view towards them and they have a laid back life settings. And I love the fact that they are proud of who they are.
Sarah M 97
ReplyDeleteI think the southerners are great and loving people.
DeleteHey there Sarah!
Madeline C. 97
ReplyDeleteAs I think about how to answer this question, I am sitting here staring at my welcome mat.
DeleteTiffany W. 96
ReplyDeleteI believe people like watching southerners on TV because in some ways they are more relatable.
ReplyDeleteAlso this is something that's different from all other regions in many ways. You can look at southerners as people who really work together when a disaster happens or walking down the side walk to say "excuse me".
DeleteChris G. 95
DeleteI think that the humor and that some people can relate to these southern characters is what causes the fascination.

Ann L. 97 in response to Marganette pl. 90
ReplyDeleteHey Marganette! just like you I do have so much on my plate that I rarely have time to watch shows. Its true people are fascinated with shows that are interesting to them but which would be vice versa to others.
In response to Priscilla
ReplyDeleteI sort of agree. In a sense, they are the only part of the United States that has a "true culture" that is set apart of the rest of the US.
ReplyDeleteKim S 90
ReplyDeleteI think the fascination with southern characters comes from their attitudes.
Callie G. 64
DeleteI agree with your statement Kim. Southern charters really do have a strong attitude and do what they want 99% of the time. When they choose to do something they do not hold back. They are very strong willing people.
Ada Ohanu Online 97
ReplyDeleteI think that the fascination with southern characters is the way they might carry themselves.
Callie G. 64
ReplyDeleteI believe that the fascination with southern characters could be they way they act compared to most people.
ReplyDeleteI think that the fascination with distinctly southern characters is the fact that we are very charming people, we are down to earth, we like to have fun, we express our religion, we like to work hard, and most of the time well mannered people.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. I believe that they watch the shows because people from the south are more easily to relate to. It is also very true that southerns are down to earth, and don't care what they look like in front of a camera. I also believe that people find what we say funny, and love our accents.
Isabel Lopez 96
ReplyDeleteI think that people like watching this shows because they are pretty funny.
ReplyDeleteHCantrell96
ReplyDeleteI think that Southerners are often stereotyped to be loud and carefree from what others say and think about them.

ReplyDeleteUnlike many other reality television shows, southern shows exhibit real life and hard work.
DeleteI believe people are fascinated with a southern redneck simply because its funny. The way we do things, how we speak, our thought process, it's all sort of a big joke. The simplicity of a good old southern boy was what many wished they had. A carefree life with quirky talents was so thrilling. I love to watch it all because it feel like home! Its always funny to see!
ReplyDeleteChris G. 95
DeleteThe humor is what attracts people to these southern characters.
ReplyDeleteShanah E.
ReplyDeleteHeather P.
ReplyDeleteAmanda B. 96
ReplyDeleteMany of the tv shows have many characteristics and characters that are from the South.
Chris G. 95
ReplyDeleteI think that many people are fascinated by southern characters because the things they do and say are funny to some people. Also most that live in the south can relate to these people in some way or another. I know that i will always be fascinated with people i can relate to whether its positive or negative. People tend to like other that are like them in a way.

ReplyDeletei think people are fascinated with the southern characters because our way of life. most southern have a strong accent and uses world that most people would not undertsand we have a way of shorten our words. As since there is noting bout land and woods compared to the north. most people go hunting for animals and would eat them and use the rest of there body for others things to make.
Michael Lee 97
ReplyDeleteI believe the fascination around "distinctly southern characters" comes -actually- from the fact that it's not something very common in the rest of the united states.
ReplyDeleteAustin T. 96
ReplyDeleteI think the fascination with Southerners comes from the fact that there is no other place in the world where people are raised, taught, and act like Southerners. Southerners are raised to treat elders with respect and to help those in need. They are usually taught starting at a very young age how to live off the land. But they also have a wild side to them that I think is what make people so attracted to watching their shows.
Lucy k.84.
ReplyDeleteI think that each place has its unique customs and traditions.

ReplyDeleteHonestly I think overall just shows are shows, but I feel like they make southern people seem more warm and caring when in reality not every southern person is that way.
