Final Word on the Weather

Greetings! Hopefully the messy winter weather is behind us. What has been the best and worst for you in the two icy events here in North GA?  Don’t include school was cancelled.

Worst: We had to postpone a trip to Florida.
Best: I absolutely loved some of the fall-out related to the weather and Valentine’s Day. My favorite is the link below which tells of a GA County that cancelled Valentine’s Day per the Sherriff’s Department.

Worst: Getting stuck at my house being the only child. My parents are much older than the average parents and liked staying indoors rather than outside where I was half the time. I live in a neighborhood that is very difficult to get in and out of, especially with the weather conditions, so I was not able to invite or get to any of my friends to play with.
Best: Getting to go sledding! I love sledding! There are many hills in the neighborhood so I would just walk for like a couple miles and sled down every hill. It was a blast! I picked up a lot of speed on Wednesday after it all kind of iced over.

Sledding sounds super fun. What did you use to sled on? My children wanted to go sledding in our neighborhood but I worry too much for that but it did sound fun. Z

I have to agree. Sledding was the best part. My family went sledding also. We only have one big hill in our neighborhood and didn't think about going down it until it was pretty much melted =(

I know what you mean, I am an only child to, so it kind of sucks to get stuck inside.

    4. I so agree with you ! Having that time home was amazing ! And I got to sled too, even though we used laundry baskets I had the most fun I have had in so long .

The best part of the winter weather was having my husband home. He works from sun up to sun down and usually the kids have maybe an hour with him once he gets home. During the winter weather storms we had lots of family game nights and dinners together. It was really a nice change. And of course the worst part was running out of food and being forced to stay indoors. I forgot how much food my children eat. They are usually in school so when they come home they have one snack and then its dinnertime. Well, since we were unable to leave the house all they did was eat, eat, eat. Z

I must agree that the much needed family time was the best part of the winter weather. I think we all are just going so much that we miss out on spending time with each other.

    3. Isn't it awesome being able to spend time with your family? Most people take things like that for granted, but being able to have each other and share that moment with each other, your family won't forget it. Sometimes it's a negative situation that brings positivity out of us all. Growing people ALWAYS eat too much :)

Worst moment: The worst moment for me during the storm was that, I was not properly dressed for the winter storm on the day it happened; and how car got stuck in the snow. So we had no choice than to walk about 20 miles home. This experience was really bad for me.
Best: The beat moment was having my siblings and cousins in the house. We hardly get to see one another so the winter storm created an avenue for everyone to be together. We were able to watch movies, play, and eat.

Holy cannoli, 20 miles seems unimaginable to me. Not being dressed properly is bad enough but to walk that long...I'm glad its over for you. I'm glad that you made it home safely and that your family was there to help you weather the storm. Take care, Z

Worst: The snow kept me home for few days allowing me to baby sit a lot of kids that was spending a week at my house. My soccer friendly match was cancel but the most hurtful part was that the snow allow me to work on valentine day because some got stuck at work during the snow and needed to go home and some call off.

Best: The snow clear up pretty fast allowing me to get a valentine gift. My soccer game wasn't cancel and we won 1-0. The snow was clear on the days I worked and I was also able to go outside and workout.
Overall, the best and worst make it a great experience for me.

The best part of the Winter weather was having everyone in the house. It felt almost like a vacation with no work, no school, hanging out, playing games, and eating lots of junk.
The worst part was having everyone in the house. Not being able to get out quickly led to "cabin fever" and there were times that I found it difficult to accomplish anything worthwhile (school work, business).
However, I will take another (brief) spell of inclement weather. But only one day next time.

Worst: My worst moment was when I got stuck for twelve hours on the first snow and my children had to spend the night at school. Was a very terrifying experience especially seeing cars going down the hill.
Best moments: Was when my little son had to sled on the snow for the first time and also having my family together this time. Was so amazing to see how people can be just generous. I came across one guy who was offering coffee to people who were stuck on the hill and this made me almost forget where I was. It is maybe an experience of life time.

It is good that you at least decided to walk but how long did it take you to get home? I actually thought of it but thought 30miles at sunset, might take me longer than driving. Now talking of not being dressed well for the weather is also something that I have learned. Since that day, I've always made sure I have an extra jacket or throw in the truck and always have enough gas in my car. Maybe we've learned something.

Best part of the snow? The beauty and majesty that it brought about. Nothing is prettier than trees covered in snow. There is nothing better than waking up, looking out the window and seeing white. Simply beautiful.
Worst part was being stuck in my house for days on end. Our driveway is extremely steep and we couldn't get cars up or down the driveway for days. Thus we were trapped where we were. Which is isolated from society. Cabin Fever began to affect me.

    1. J.Wrtight90 reply to Logan C.64. I totally agree with you about how beautiful the landscape is when its covered in snow. Its give off a feeling of peace and calm that makes you want to get back in bed and smuggle with the one you love and drink hot chocolate and watch re-runs of Martin and glad at all his funny jokes. I also agree that after a few days that feeling is gone and I'm ready to go somewhere I don't care where just out of this house(LOL)

I agree on both you best and worst! We live away from society seems like as well so the trees and the land full on snow was gorgeous! Also likewise we have a very step driveway! So we were stuck for a pretty good time.

Best: Seeing and enjoying the beautiful snow! We had the best time playing and sledding in the snow! I think I enjoyed it as much as the kids! Seeing the beauty almost makes me wanna move north. I'm not so sure all the family would approve of this transition. Maybe Northern California?!?!

Worst: Having one child stranded at a friend's house, one stranded at school, and seeing the snow melt. We enjoyed sledding and making snow cream so much that we hated to see the snow melt. I must have made 15 bowls between the two occurrences, but I loved seeing the smiles on my children's faces.

The worst for me would have to be the first snow we had this year. I road to the mall with some of my friends to meet Braves players, and ended up getting stuck there because my dad didn't want me riding back with them on the slick roads. I almost had to stay the night, by myself, at the mall. It took my dad from 11 that morning 'til 6 that night to get there. He was coming from 41 to Town Center.... It was crazy that it took him that long.

The best was sledding the next day with my family. My brother came over and we walked around looking for hills to go down. This last snow wasn't as much fun. But I had fun hanging out with my family.

I'm very sorry to hear that you had to sit and wait that long for your dad to pick you up. I like being at the mall but definitely not for that long. My dad works in Atlanta and lives in Alpharetta, he left work at 5:00PM and didn't make it back home until 9:00AM the next morning. I also got a chance to go sledding and It was the best experience I had in the snow storm.

The worst was the first snow day I got stuck on 278 coming from the krogers gas station we stopped for a cople mins looked up and it was jam packed bad. It took about 40 min to get off 278, then we hit hwy 92 it took 4 hrs to realize the only reason we weren't moving was because of cars that couldn't make it up the hill. So we hit 278 again going towards wal-mart got stuck 35 minutes. Finally after going 5 different ways we finally got home around 7:15. from leaving the house at 8:30 that morning.

The best was that I didn't have to come to school or go anywhere else and to see all the beautiful snow everywhere was amazing.

Chelsea N.90 That sounds horrible to be stuck for so long. I was lucky enough to listen to my intuition when it starting snowing on Tuesday after my first 9:00 a.m. class. I saw the snow coming down fast and instinctively decided to skip my next class which started at 10:30 and ended at 11:45 a.m. When I called my mom and told her I was skipping class and coming home, she thought I was crazy. She told me not to miss class, but I came home anyways. And boy was she glad I did later! Had I stayed, it would've taken me hours to get home. Some friends of mine stayed for their 10:30 a.m. classes and they weren't as fortunate as me. Moral of the story, always go with your gut. Especially when snow and ice is involved.

Worst: The worst part of the icy events is that I did not know for sure if my dad was safe. He is a truck driver, and he was driving through the stuff. I also didn't like being stuck at home. I did start to experience cabin fever. I am glad it is over.

Best: The best part of the ice was being able to stay at home and spend time with my family. Even though I was ready to get out of the house, I was glad for the time I got to spend with my family. I also got to lay around and read. Plus, I got to work on school work without having to stop to go to work.

Thankfully, I did not get stuck in the ice. I work at a school, and they called it off before I had to go in. I am sorry to hear that you got stuck for so long. I am glad you made it home. I also agree the sites were beautiful. It seems like we never see that much snow, and then we got it twice. It was really close together to. I enjoyed not going anywhere. I am glad it is over.

My favorite part of all the snow is when all my friends and I decided to take out my jeep and do donuts in an icy parking lot. Probably at the top of the list as one of the most fun things I have ever done. Maybe not the safest, but it was for sure a lot of fun! The worst part was probably the fact that the gym was closed which cut into my workout time. No days off!

My favorite part of the snow and icy weather was that I was able to be snowed in with my friends and family. I live on back roads also so it was very easy to ride four wheelers and sled with every one. And of course the fact I didn't get stuck in any of the mess either times! The worst part was having to be inside for so long and not being able to practice softball.

The best part about the snow weather was that I was able to go hiking with two of my friends. We took a sled and went on a three mile hike to local state park to enjoy the weather. The hike was through the woods and it gave me a different perspective of nature that was really enjoyable. It also was a chance to spend time with good friend's. The worst part was business was slow at work due to the condition of the roads. I work at a restaurant serving tables and when the restaurant is slow I don't make as much money. For the most part I enjoyed the weather, but I am definitely ready for spring!

The worst part about the weather for me was defiantly being stuck inside the whole time. I like it much more when the weather is nice and you can go and do stuff, but being stuck in the house was rather boring. There was not much to do at all, so I split my time between school work, books, and binge Netflix marathons of The West Wing. It was kind of boring.

The best part was that I was able to catch up on a lot of school work. Since there was nothing else to do, I was able to get a lot of work done that I had needed to get done for a while. So that was nice. IT was also sort of nice just to take a break from everything and relax with the family, just chilling out and watching TV, again mainly the West Wing, with some Olympics thrown in. So all in all the storm was not too bad, but I am thankful it is over, now we can move on to spring, one of the best times of the year.

The worst part of the weather was having to sit in hours of traffic just to drive a few miles. We were moving so slowly that I was able to leave my car on Hwy. 92, run across the road and take a bathroom break and get some dinner. When I got back to my car the traffic had only moved 6 feet! I work two jobs, one for public schools and the other delivering flowers. I was not able to work either job for almost two weeks because of the weather. My pockets are sad : (

The best part was being able to spend time with my boyfriend. We both work two jobs and are both parents and students. Since we were not able to work or go to school, we took advantage of the rare occasion to be lazy and spend a full week together.

    1. J. Wright reply to Ashley M. I am sorry to hear that because of the storm you wasn't able to work either job. That's the only draw back to the storm is that people can't go to work and if you don't work there is no money coming in. It should be a law that say's if the city is shut down due to bad weather you still get paid without having to use your personal or vacation days to cover the days missed.

    From the first snow storm:

Worst moments: on my way home from class I turned on to the street where my house is and a truck was stuck in the middle of the road. I had to swerve and I swerved into an icy ditch. I had to leave my car there for three days. I also got really sick and it ended up lasting for three weeks.

Best moments: I got to catch up on school work and get ahead. I got to sleep in and feel better from being sick. I got to spend a lot of time with my family by playing games and watching movies. We also went sledding in a kayak.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Chelsea N.90 The worst part about the snow was that my brother and sister got home late from school. I was extremely worried about my sister, who is in middle school, because I heard many kids had to stay on buses because they were stranded and some even slept on buses for hours. I was worried that my sister was going to end up doing the same thing, or sleeping at school. Thankfully, she just arrived home a little late and was safe. My father wasn't able to make it home from work. He works out in Villa Rica and drives a truck so it was impossible for him to even try to make the drive. Several of his co-workers tried to leave, and soon after they came right back to work because there was no where to go. He had to spend the night at work for two nights.
The best part about the weather was though I had no classes, I was able to catch up on some much needed homework and rest. I spent the days doing math and watching Netflix with the family. Oh, and taking naps. I actually enjoyed the peacefulness of the whole thing, but after a few days cabin fever had begun to take over. Definitely not wanting another storm to happen anytime soon.

  22. The best part of the storm was the snow minus- the ice which I hate. Living in Germany for seven years helped prepare me for this kind of weather and to appreciate each season for what it is. We just enjoyed being safe at home with each other and was thankful that the lights didn't go off, but was prepared with candles and flashlights if it did. I think the worst part of the snow and ice is that it makes it harder for the birds to find food, so I always put out sun-flower seed and bread crumbs for them and sit back and watch the many different birds come to eat. I especially loves to see the red cardinal birds the red against the white snow covered ground is so beautiful. After a couple of days locked in we all went out for a walk which was nice and to see the streets empty.

Besides leaving for church in the weekend there was nothing interesting whatsoever to do. I stayed cooped up in my room the entire time.
Best: While cooped up inside my room majority of the time I got to finish the many hats, scarfs, & blankets that I intended on knitting. It kept me calm & relaxed. Took trips out my room for food ofcourse then went straight back to knitting once I was done. In the end they all came out wonderful.

My best experience would have to be the overall snow fun like building ramps to sled and snowboard down this big hill on the golf course in my neighborhood and watching people wreck on it as well as do good, but either way it was still fun any funny. I would also say doing donuts in parking lots with my jeep.

Being in my car for that period of a time caused me to have a panic attack, but thankfully I was able to get home to my family.
The best for me was having time home with my fiancée and my girls that we normally wouldn't get together due to work and school. We were warm, safe, fed, and got to enjoy the beauty of the snow for a few days while enjoying each others company and the company of a few snowmen.

  38. Courtney R.97 So, the best part of the Winter weather we had here was all the extra time home with my daughter. The more recent snow days backed up to Cobb Co. furlough days, so we got an extra long break. We got to experience the first (and second) snow in our new home and met a lot of our neighbors outside while taking in the elements. We got our master bed and bath room painted with the extra time off work. On the flip side, one of the bad things was trying to keep up with school while home with my girl. She is an only child and it was very difficult for me to keep her occupied and happy while still managing to have time for school. Oh, and just a small touch of cabin fever!

The worst part of the weather was my husband works for the road dept, so unforuntatly he was out working 15 hour days and I worry every time that he will get hurt. There was a father from Ellijay who works in Calhoun as a speech therapist and left early one morning durning the snow storm to go to work. He was killed in a car accident because of the weather. My children wanted to go to their grandparents house that is a mile away, so since we could not drive on ice. We walked thru the woods, the kids did not have any problems, but I fell several times before getting there. I only had to work one day durning the snow, which my good husband drove me and picked me up. So the kids enjoyed being out of school and sleding and snow ball fights and knowing they do not have to make those days up at the end of the year. The snow was beautiful, the biggest snow flakes I have ever seen. I enjoy watching it snow but also enjoy watching it melt.

The best things to come from this is the icy white roads making just a beautiful sight outside as the yards are covered in snow the trees are white the kids are out building snowmen and having a blast. The other upside to this is that it forced me into doing all my math work.

worst-I had to miss a day of work so I lost 8 hours that week and since I get paid hourly, I wasn't too happy.
best-despite that I missed a day of work, I got a day off. I work almost 35 hour weeks and the only day I have off are the days I have classes so it was nice that I actually had a day off where I could just relax at my house

  42. Worst:There was a crack in the windshield, of my parents Toyota Camry. My parents made an appointment to fix it that day. Well aware of the fact that it was snowing. The appointment was at 3:00. So I left at 1:00 thinking it would take me 2hrs to get there. As I live in Paulding and the appointment was in Marietta. When I
arrived there at 2:30 it was closed. So i had to drive home. At that point the snow was pretty bad. So it took me the better part of 3hrs to get home

The worst part of the whole winter weather was Tuesday when I got dismissed from school it took me an extra hour to get home so a total of 3 hrs. Then when I got to my car is Jasper because I carpool with my sister to school in Marietta, it was too bad to drive home I had to sit in my car which the heater wasn't working at the time and wait for someone to get there to get me with four wheel drive. And above it all this was my new Chevy Tahoe that the heater wasn't working in.
The best part though was getting home and being snowed in with my three girls.

During the first ice storm I got stuck at work and had to stay the night at the hospital. That was the worst part for me, being away from my family. I was worried about them and missed them so much. I was so frustrated. The best part was during the second ice storm. I got to be snowed in with my kids for two whole days! We went to Kroger in the middle of the night and the kids thought it was funny that there were almost no groceries left. My daughter said that it looked like we were under zombie attack. My son was wishing for the power to go out so we could use flashlights, but it never did. Seeing the storm through my child's eyes made it fun and exciting instead of stressful and scary.

Hello Luis! I am glad you got to spend that time with your kids. My son also helped lighten the mood with his perspective on what was happening. Kids really can have amazing insight at times.

Worst- The worst part of both the winter storms was that I missed two days of work each time. Also during the first one my work did not call off that first Tuesday and parents were not able to make it to their kids in time-I work at a daycare.
Best- I got to sleep in and spend some extra time with my boyfriend. I also got to clean my house up a little bit.

Worst- The worst part for me was not being able to get out and go to work. I like to make money and I got bored at home.

Best- On an attempt to go to work my drive way was not melted and was complete snow and ice. I drove down and hit the ice and spun in almost a complete circle it was pretty awesome! Mom screaming and freaking out was funny too. My sister and I laughed.

I agree with you about not going to work because people had bills to pay and the whole was just taking away time and money for everyone. I lost about 30 hours throughout these storms and that is 30 hours we do not get paid for :(. I wish that I had good moments, but i can only think about my worst because of how drastic it was.

  47. Cherish. S 97In response to Meredith J. 96 My worst part was the same as yours. I hate missing work. I used to work at a daycare so I know how crazy it can be when the parents can't get there and the kids get stuck at the daycare. I worked in a two year old class.

  48. Worst: I had to stay at work for three days straight, I don't mind making the money, but it put me behind on a lot of my school work because I didn't have the proper items with me. It also cause a lot of our employees to get hurt or wreck their cars.

Best: When I finally was able to go home, I was able to spend some time in bed which was much needed because I have been working non stop for the past 4 weeks between school, work, military and other obligations.

  49. Worst: I had so much free time but couldnt go anywhere! I couldnt go to work and make money and I couldnt spend any time with my friends.

I agree with you Sam, I had a lot of free time as well as working over the four days straight. I wish I was able to go home to sleep and play video games as well but unfortunately that did not happen. However the upside was my paycheck was fantastic because of getting stuck so in the end I guess you can say it worked out.

  53. A.R. 97The best part about the weather was being stuck in the house with my fiance getting some well deserved alone time with out her hectic basketball schedule and my work/ school. I also enjoyed the ice/ snow outside . I loved going down the hills I love next to. It was like being a child back in new jersey!
The worst was getting caught at in work in the snow. It was horrible. I stepped off the bus to walk to the building and all this snow just started falling. I had to stay there until my fiance ( going 10 mph on the roads) got there. I hated it.

Best: Actually getting to use my son's snow boots he got for Christmas from my family in Michigan. I was sure they were going to just be regifted to my niece next year.
Worst: My husband getting in a wreck 5 minutes after it started snowing. He was perfectly fine and it could have been a lot worse so I'm thankful for that.

  55. Best: Had a great time off work and a great time to get outside and actually enjoy the snow. Took my new puppy outside, which he loved every minute of it. I actually enjoy the snow since we do not get a lot of it.
Worst: Got a bit of the cabin fever and wanted to go on an adventure; however, I wasn't about to risk damaging my car, also I ran out of dog food for my pup. Everything was okay because he did eat some old chicken from the fridge!

Best: I have never seen snow so it was great to experience a little of what I've always heard about as a real winter. My kids had a great time playing in the snow and I learned how dangerous it is to drive on ice.
Worst: Being held hostage in your home is not something any body enjoys. I have experience this safety requirement before in the hurricane state of Florida but not for that length of time. I thought it was very weird how people react to the inconvenience of bad weather in Georgia so differently.

The best for me was that I got to spend time with my daughter! I just jad her recently and have already had to return to work, so this gave me an excuse to love up on her and cuddle with her all day! The worst was that I didn't get paid for one of those days... I will survive.

This weather has been a great experience, but also one of the worst experiences I have ever had to face.

Best: I got to catch up on alot of homework. Due to the fact that i have two jobs and am the oldest of 5 siblings, I never really have time to just freely do my work without being rushed or crammed.

Worst: The first snow storm was the worst due to the fact that this is my first year having a car and I have never driven in the snow. I did not know that braking on snow/ice would lead to your car sliding. I got into a horrible car crash where my car was totaled. The only good thing that came out of it was that i did not get a ticket do to inclement weather. I hit another car from the back which I came to find out was my nextdoor neighbor. If I could take it all back I would not drive in snow and just park my car anywhere:(.

Best: In the first snow storm I had a bad case of cabin fever, so I walked five miles to my girlfriends house and spent the day with her.

Worst: On valentines day, I was driving on my street. I only wiped off the ice on the drivers side and the sun glaring off the passenger side was blinding, so I didn't see a jeep on the side of the road. My mom's right headlight got a good look at it though.

I didn't mind the weather and it was nice to have because it is rare for Georgia.
The worst for me was being stuck at home. I hate being in one place for long especially when there is nothing to do. The best was being with family. My family and I have such busy lives that it is hard to always be able to do something at the same time. It was a nice change to spend so much time with the people I love.

Best; Being given plenty of time to sleep in and play numerous games.

  66. Worst: the terrifying thought of my sister sleeping in the car and was out there for 15 hours. i knew so many people unable to get to work, home or even to their children. it was quite a mess.
Best: it was so humbling to finally sit back and do nothing for a few hours. there was no rushing anywhere, no need to wake up on time. just being lazy in my comfortable house.

There are many experiences I am still yet to have, but I'd venture a guess that there aren't many things that can compare to the feeling of sitting next to the heat glow of the fire made up of trees fresh chopped by your tall brother from the backyard woods, with a cup of hot chocolate and whipped cream and a Netflix movie while watching the sticky flakes fall through a crystal window. Growing up in the south means snow is a rarity and brings that much more meaning to seeing the neighbor kids outside with their mittens and beanies, icy eyebrows and red cheeks, with garbage can lids in hand waiting for a turn down the retention pond slope. There is a peacefulness in knowing school is cancelled, work is closed and the streets are quiet without a single tire track interrupting. The world slows and time becomes irrelevant as you find the chance to finish the novel you started months ago, clean the house you've neglected far too long and start the T.V. series your friend raves about every week on Facebook. I loved doing doughnuts on fourwheelers in the front yard, nails digging in tight to my bundled up best friends’ Carhartt jacket and editing Instagram pictures to perfection of the cherished hours spent with my favorite people. However, as usual, when life brings unexpected good there is a negative to reciprocate. It was heartbreaking to hear stories of people stuck on the roads for hours and more, with nothing to eat or drink. Many people ran out of gas and suffered without heat. I was blessed in that I never lost power and had the essentials covered before the storm hit, but as the news and social media feeds suggested, many others weren’t quite as lucky. My only hope is that the next time Georgia feels the effects of a winter storm, its people are well prepared and have more good experiences to talk about than bad.

@ A. Sheffeild 96. I can relate to the empty feeling you imply in being stuck at home. The walls seem to mock you as TV. becomes bland and the newness of free time wears off. Winter weather has shown me that I'm a raging workaholic and productivity is a part of my life's essentials.

  69. Tammy C Well the first snowy event was awesome because we were in Nashville Tn. auditioning for Americas Got Talent. Fingers are crossed we made it to the next round. The last snow and ice had its good moments and not so good moments. It was great because my family was home safe and we spent quality time together talking. Who does that anymore? The not so good part was we were stuck in the house and could not go anywhere. I like to go go go.

The worst part about the snow was being stuck in traffic for 5 1/2 hours with my 7 month old daughter in the back seat! It took 5 1/2 hours for what should have been a 15 minute drive. The best part was having a few days off from work to spend some extra time with my family.

Worst: I was stuck in traffic because an inconsiderate individual was doing donuts in the middle of the road showing everyone how much he cared with a polite, raised finger. Oh, and I must mention that there was a child in the back seat; he was a tremendously positive influence from what I could tell.
