1st Blog for Summer Session: Celebratory Foods

Greetings!  During this summer session in Sociology 1101 we’re going to do a lot of talking about food. Here is a fun topic to get us going. In the United States it’s common place to celebrate special occasions with food. If you have just received GREAT news, what food and drink items or which restaurant would you choice to celebrate with family and friends?

When I receive great news or am celebrating a holiday or special occasion, my family and I love to eat at a wonderful Italian restaurant in Smyrna called Scalini's. The restaurant is famous for its eggplant parmesan, as it's said to have certain "labor-inducing" elements in the dish. This of course caught my eye when I was 40 weeks pregnant with my son back in 2009. My husband and I gave it a try and we were so impressed with the food and service that we have named it our go-to spot for family celebrations!

When have a celebratory dinner or lunch, there is one place I would choose to go to all the time. Hai Hai in Hiram, Georgia. I, personally, enjoy sushi the most. The Philidelphia roll is by far my favorite of all rolls. A Philidelphia roll is salmon and cream cheese rolled up in a short piece of seaweed with sticky, white rice around the outside. Water, in my opinion, is the best drink to order with this roll. The flavor will stay on your taste buds.

Hello Erin, I enjoy sushi also. I have only eaten at Hai Hai once, but my wife and I love Taki, which is located across the street. We have celebrated a couple of birthdays there. If you have not already tried Taki, you should give it a shot.

The answer to this question depends on who I am celebrating with and what I am celebrating. If I am with my whole family, including parent and siblings, we usually go to Provino's. If it is just my husband and kids we like Benihana. When my children were young it was Mellow Mushroom. Italian does seem to be the favorite of the family and Alfredo is the dish. At Benihana, the chicken and shrimp are delicious cooked on the grill especially with the show.

When celebrating great news it is more of a drinking alcohol thing for me, rather than eating a special type of food. Celebratory holidays such as christmas, easter, & thanksgiving, I always expect turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy, and various side dishes. When I personally receive great news, I drink beer.

I'm with you on the celebratory drink idea. My family always ops for alcohol when celebrating a special event. Must be the Irish in my blood ;).

  6. Whenever I am celebrating, usually in Jamaica, I will eat Ackee and codfish. I also like ox tails and jerk chicken, as well as curry chicken with rice and peas. Sorrel is a special drink we usually drink at Christmas time. It is made from the Sorrel plant, and it has a really unique taste.

It is very interesting to hear your celebration ritual. I would never have thought about codfish as something to eat for a celebration, and I have never heard of Achee. Learning about others cultures really makes you think, what else do I not know about other people and how they live and celebrate?

    2. I love ethnic foods and trying anything new is def one of my favorite hobbies with food. My husband and I have traveled to Jamaica and tried many foods, don't remember the name of particulars but I do know the fruit was abundant and cooling in the tropical heat. I love ox tails, curry chicken& shrimp as well. The sorrel drink sounds interesting, would love to give it a try.

    3. I love Jamaican food too. My parents are Jamaican so It's practically all I ate growing up. It's funny because I always thought everyone new about jerk chicken or curry chicken or ackee and fish. Pretty much every time we celebrate a birthday or Christmas or Thanksgiving my family makes at least one traditionally Jamaican dish.

  7. I would have to choose Zaxby's because I am addicted to their Boneless Wings Meal.. They must be putting some type of drug in the food. I have to limit my intake of Zaxby's because I send so much money, it's ridiculous. I would rather go to Zaxby's than Ruth-Chris Steakhouse.

When celebrating good news, my family usually ops for something simple and delicious like pizza and beer. We love pizza from Mellow Mushroom, but we stay on the healthy side and get a veggie pizza. We usually get take out pizza and celebrate at home though.

  10. When celebrating I am a traditional Beer kind of guy. I enjoy having a toast during the celebration. I'm retired Military so just about every formal or non-formal event consisted of alcoholic beverages.

  11. I cant really say that there was a particular food that was the center piece of celebrating good news in my family. We got together and ate and had a good time. Its a social thing to do. Nothing brings people together like good food.

When my friends and family celebrate we tend to grill. Steak is always a key item, shrimp and chicken too. I even throw Texas toast on the grill, saute some mushrooms and onions, all the good stuff that they all enjoy.

Well considering my birthday was yesterday, my mom wanted to take me to an early dinner. We chose Stevi B's pizza buffet because she provides for my sisters 3 kids and I have 3 kids and pizza is yummy. We had 6 kids and 2 adults and we chose our place to dine for the kiddos!

  15. If I had just received news that I thought was worthy of celebration, my wife and I would go to a restaurant called Century Tavern, which is located in Woodstock, GA. I would start the meal off with a double of Maker’s Mark, served neat, and the shrimp risotto appetizer. For my main coarse I would order the steak, unless the night’s special looked more appealing. Upon finishing the main course, I would order another double and some type of desert a la mode. After dinner my wife and I would walk around the corner to Maxwell’s Cigar Bar so that we may enjoy more drinks and a fine cigar or two.

  16. I enjoy celebrating many types of foods for celebrations. A birthday celebration for my children or spouse may include the Kani House in Woodstock. This is a typical Japanese Steakhouse. Favorites include hibachi steak, shrimp, scallops, and fried rice all prepared on a grill in front of you with a chef throwing knives and fire before your eyes for entertainment. Following the food, a desert of green tea ice-cream, and a drum beating ceremony is presented in celebration of a birthday. My kids love the show and the extra attention.

The only place that we go repeatedly for a celebration type dinner is to Der Biergarten in downtown Atlanta. My husband is from Germany and that is his favorite place to go around here. We love the setting, the food, the beer and the seating arrangements. Everyone there sits together instead of at separate tables. It forces you to meet and talk to the people sitting around you which wouldn't usually happen while sitting at your own individual table. We go there for birthdays mostly and are excited to go a few times in the coming weeks to watch Deutschland (w)in the world cup!

When i receive a great news, the only place i would take my family and friends to is Marietta Diner. I love their seafood especially the boiled jumbo shrimp with lemon butter sauce on a bed of rice and orange juice.

  19. When me and my family celebrate some good news, we always go out to eat either to Jim n Nicks or a really good Japanese restaurant.

  20. We as the entire family of five are from Africa, Kenya and we mostly likely choose what we eat because our culture is totally different. Actually we decided to find out where we can go out to eat and funny enough found a mexiican restaurant down in marietta where they cook food similar to us and liked and enjoyed it. So that became our hotel to visit every time we want to eat out.

Being in this country also broadens my orizon of cultures, only because there are so many nationalities with different cultures here. When foreigners come to my country they tend to take on our whole culture ,only because they love it, and want to be like us. Here people stay authentic to their own culture. it amazes me because i now tend to indulge in other cultural foods since they are at my fingertips. I honestly think culture is a beautiful thing, and thereby makes variety passionate. we always want what we dont have. One lust at or for another. The unknown.

  25. My family either cook or buy food like hot wings or pizza and have get together at my place or somebody else that we know and just eat, watch tv or movies, listen to music, talk and do what ever. Sometimes we the family would go out to dinner like at Longhorn, Chilies, Bahama Breeze and so on and celebrate a graduation or a birthday.
